You mean being 4 days?
July 7-10, 2005
June 15-18, 2006
July 5-8, 2007
.. yes. that is normal
The "Official" start time is on Friday morning, and then the ending time on Sunday afternoon. However, there are a few minor events, such as the mixer and a dance, which are usually held on Thursday before the con. because the minor events are a part of the convention, and there are other things to do on that day for those socially inclined, they include the fourth day in the scheduled dates.
Some people also show up ridiculously early to "set up camp" as it were.
As an example, I'm probably going to start driving down on Tuesday before the con.

I think Kage has become addicted to having an excess of volunteers.
its funny, last year there were so many volunteers on wednesday that we ran out of jobs and even got everything done early. Usually took like half the day to do that work, but we got it all done in about 4-5 hours, including loading, transporting, unloading and moving the stuff up to wherever its supposed to go. Setting all of it up was left to staff of course. I think that if things were rushed and planned out well enough, we could probably get registration set up by the end of Wednesday and start it early thursday morning.... but I wont support this notion because I know that if I did, Kage would steal my soul and make me into constaff.... not that it would be that bad, but the thought of my soul in Kage's clutches.... scary stuff. *hides before Kage can brand me*
besides, aside from getting a reg to open earlier on thursday, there wouldnt be that much benefit to rushing things.

And my lord, was that Wednesday glut appreciated (code monkey tips his hat). Volunteers are a little harder to come by during the rest of the week, so please don't let the Wednesday glut discourage anyone from volunteering the rest of the time.
In fact, don't think of it as a Wednesday glut. Think of it having almost enough. After all, 4.5 hours is still a fairly long time.

This is what is known as 'success'. We like it.
Anyone who thinks we have too many volunteers, though, didn't get in on the bag-stuff-o-rama on Wednesday night last year. Auughhffgle 3000 con bags *twitch*

...but we like breakfast first?
I would like to get registration, especially pre-reg, open as early as possible on Thursday; but the sheer logistics of it mean that early afternoon is probably the start time for a while to come.

Oh, the bag stuffing. I will say this much: We can never have too many volunteers for bag stuffing! The rate that we were getting them out last year was simply amazing. Thanks to all who helped!
Chia, don't want to make you twich any worse, but I would like to set a goal of 3,500. I think we could do it. ^^

I think we can do it! I think you'll be organizing it!
*runs away*
..No, seriously, we'll likely have to stuff about 3200-3500 bags this year. Last year's brigade method did well, scaled up to two lines reasonably, but oof 'twas an effort. We'll see how this year goes.

What the heck are these "volunteers" I thought that this was all slavery based.

I am clinically insane.
I offer as proof:
1. I am a Supersponsor, yet I volunteer many hours!
2. I have a Dealer's table, mainly to pay more money to the con!
3. I look forward to lifting heavy things!
4. I miss setting up scaffolding and transporting the loads of pipe and art boards!
5. I get up at 4 am the Wednesday of the week of the con after working a full day in the lab the day before just so I can go exhaust myself loading up the truck, drive 6 more hours, then help with setting up, then organize everything for my dealer's table!
6. And even after realizing how insane all this is, I still look forward to it every year!
*rns about in a strait jacket* Bweee-hee-hee-hee!

permalinkMan I'm glad it's still four days this year cause it'll be my first time. See I'm kinda new to this whole furry thing and last year I didn't have the money or will to go. Since then I've lost over 55lbs and plan to lose more so that I can fully enjoy it when I do go this year, though I don't have any furry friends yet.
In all actuality, even though it seems like I'm determined I may not go because I won't have any friends to meet up with imploring me to be on this forum in the first place.
This year may be the greatest year in my life thus far if I go but, that depends if I can book a hotel on Thursday that's within walking distance of the Convention center(1 mile or less).

Give us a few days. We are finalizing a contract with the Doubltree Pittsburgh Hotel, which is just two blocks away.

permalinkIs that two blocks from the Dealers Room, or is it two blocks from the hotel? 'Cause if it's two blocks to the Dealers Room, I think it might be closer than the Westin.

Assuming that the Doubletree Kage is negotiating at is at 530 William Penn Place,
this map shows the Omni and and this one the Doubletree. In short, both are in pretty much the same direction, heading away from the DLCC and the Dealer's Room.

The route on Steve's map of the Doubletree shows how to drive there, but walking is a bit more direct from the hotel entrance. The hotel building is between 6th and Bigelow, and there's a pedestrian walkway that takes you to 7th Avenue. Then follow William Penn Place to 10th Street and the Westin and DLLCC.
