and by school I mean High School or earlier, ever meet another furry? Last week, I think it was, my friend asked me during Frech class what I was griping about. I said I had to save up money for two conventions. She dismissed it as my usual whining. She then asked if I knew anything interesting on youtube. I decided to show her 2, the Ranting Gryphon. Of course the bell had to ring before I could write down the title. Lunch and Band went by without any events. When I got to my AlgebraII class, I walked to my seat and sat down. She was sitting two seats away from me at the time and passed me a note. "What did you want to write down?" it said. I wrote, "2 gryphon chocolate bunny death" and passed to her. It was intercepted by a kid between us who remarked, "I know 2." when I asked how he said he had his reasons. Later though, he told me he was, indeed, a furry. He asked me what coventions I was speaking of earlier. I said, "The Tekkoshocon (anime), and the anthrocon." he answered, "Really? I'm going to the anthrocon too." Stick a fork in me. I'm done. |

That's cool. I'd met other furs during highschool but never just by chance like that(I'd known them online prior or was introduced through other fur friends). I did run into a few furs at college in a similar way, though that was a far more diverse environment.
There are more of us than you think xD

Well, that's a bit reassuring. But he and I agreed, it's still kinda rare to find us in school, especially in west virginia.

I knew a bunch back in high school. Funny thing is, most of them didn't know about each other until afterwards.

Yeah, I remember that. Also the arcade. Like everyone there was a furry, and I never knew about it till the damn place shut down. We should all carry special badges, or have some sort of secret hand shake or something to help me identify other furs.

permalinkI met two in high school, but none in my school. I was actively online during that time, and made arrangements to meet up with them.
The interesting story would have been how I met my mate, but that was very much after high school and not relevant to this thread.
...and I'm starting to get the vibe that my signature may cast doubt onto anything I say on here.

This one wasn't a school meet, 'cause, you know, I'm 55. But a four years ago I wrote up a long conreport on my first Anthrocon that obliquely mentioned I work at the University of Michigan. A couple of days later I get email from some furs who are staffers at the Medical School asking obliquely if I was the person who wrote the review of the unusual convention he worked in Philadelphia. I replied yes, and it turned out to be my first intro to some of the Michigan furries.
<Insert small world cliche here.>

permalinkNo other furries in high school for me (nor university, sadly). But I did recently find out what a certain AFS guru, who posts occasionally to the openafs-info mailing list, does on his off time ^_^
(I'm subscribed as my employer uses OpenAFS. Took me quite some time to connect the dots...)

Well, there's bound to be more in my school. The one I met hangs around with mostly juniors and seniors, so if he knew anyone, he'd be sure to tell me. There might be some freshman, but I'd find it hard to talk to them seiing as I'm a sophomore.

I knew some who probably would have been had they known about furry back then.
One also would have been a vore. One of his stories was about a sneaky vulture tricking poor little bunnies into being eaten. >:}
But then, everyone in my school was wierd... it's in the NJ Pine Barrens. ;P

I actually got into the community during high school when I met another furry--but there were no other furries actually in my school, but a small gathering of them in my hometown, at least.

Yeah, I've met several furs chatting online through anthrochat and on FA. I've only met one furry in person, this dude i met on FA, he was real chill. I go to a very small high school, so i doubt there are any other furries besides me in my class. Though, the story about that guy in your class, very sweet

Yes, sweet indeed. Does anyone know the percentage of furries in america compared to "normal" people. My highschool's kinda on the small side, I want to know if the chances would be good of finding another one. (OGHS only has about 300 people.)

This number would be impossible to estimate, because nobody can agree on what exactly makes a person a "furry." Even after all these years the term is somewhat nebulous. After all, is everyone who watches Star Trek a "Trekkie?"

About 5 years ago, someone remarked at a con that you could, "fit all the world's furries into Yankee Stadium".
That number is probably larger today, but it should give you an a rouge idea as to the magnitude of how many furries exist.

permalinkWhen I was in High School nobody knew what "furry" was. I didn't find out until after I graduated in 97.

Not me. But then my upper school (you'd call it high school) graduating class was 36, and i wasn't really connected to the wider furry world back then--just to this one small corner that was almost exclusively dragons.
Of course, there was this year--i knew my brother had a friend who's a furry; that's not so surprising. I just didn't know he was friends with a furry celebrity. *wrygrin* No big deal, i managed to put my jaw back without too much trouble...
