Fox has done a segment on one of their shows talking about "anthrocon". They even go so far as to say "their tenth anniversary" in the scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0cu7ahmCr0 just something I thought you might find interesting. |

Interesting! I'm not sure what to make of it. It will be interesting to watch!
I think that overall it's just one more indication that Anthrocon has become a fixture in the City of Pittsburgh. We turned the whole city Furry!

Well, if nothing else, I actually thought it was kinda funny.

permalinkAye, though I think the first one was more chuckle-worthy than the second.

permalinkI thought the first one was funny enough you should show it at opening ceremonies!

At least this is really lighthearted. At least it's not another CSI.

permalinkThe only question that comes to mind is, how long till one of the furry based TV shows is making fun of this show?

Wow. I have a feeling pittsburgh is going to be furry capital of america in a few years to come. Another surprising thing is that the TV shows are actually getting better about the stereotyping.

permalinkSome of it was funny cause of the goofiness and lunacy in his tone. I can take jokes and as a furry you have to laugh along.
Furries laugh as haters hate, and onlookers question what's at stake.

Wow. I found that surprisingly funny. I don't really watch TV much anymore, so I've never even heard of this show. But hey, at least those are jokes I can laugh with haha!

permalinkWell, they sprinkled in plenty of "furries can't get dates or spouses" jokes in there,
but when they weren't doing that (or claiming Star Trek fans beat up furries,
thus ignoring all the Trekkie furries), they had some funny jokes in between.
I was expecting them to be MORE offensive. My expectations of the media are SO low
that being only SOMEWHAT offensive can get a passing grade.
(I still have a photo of the furry with the United Federation of Planets flag
he carried in the 07 Fursuit Parade.)

Kelsey really stopped being funny too many years ago for this to be relevant.

I still think it's funny funny no one's noticed the irony of Kelsey Grammer (who played Beast in the third X-Men movie) making jokes about furries. Especially considering that most of us down own/wear fursuits, and he's had to spend hours a day getting his fur on.
But I am a sucker for irony.

For those of us who can't view Youtube between dial-up at home and Mordac blockage at work, how about some details? E.g., the name of the show, which might enable me to find it on Fox's main site...

Thanks; the only blurb I found on http://www.fox.com/schedule/showinfo/backtoyou/bty_108.htm was "Gary is assigned to cover a convention for people who wear animal costumes", one of three sub-plots, so I don't know how much time this will get
A quick poke at http://www.fox.com/backtoyou/ didn't turn up any previews - seems like they'd put them there as well as on Youtube, but I'm just an engineer, not a marketroid

Wait. Sitcoms are making casual fun of us, the public largely accepts us, and really we're not that special anymore...that smells funny...
...oh no.

Be thankful that for the moment, we are not considered "Cool", as in: "The Next Big Thing". Any hint of growth among youth, and suddenly you will see "Furry Conventions" run by big corporate sponsors pushing a softdrink or something, Sponsors who will find and create alternative bands and music around werewolves, and so many corporate types trying to shape and capture the mindset of Young America that none of us would recognise it any more, let alone have fun. And the products of our Fandom?
Let's just say, that after the commercial "Cool" manipulators got done, Some big corporation would have figured out how to steal the whole Anthropomorphic Animal concept from us, take total control, and Glen Wooten wouldn't be able to afford Terrie Smith Original Artwork, let alone the rest of us.

Yeah I think I'll have to check that out to night. Seems kind of funny except for the dignity and personal pride line. But I'm sure that he'll learn a valuable lesson in the end as all sitcom characters do.

Ahh the threat of severe physical violence. The TV sitcom's easy way out and nothing close to what would actually happen. Well, I'm sure we'd all discuss such a thing but never come close to doing anything of the sort...
And unmarried virgins? Tsk tsk FOX. You should know better.

Now now, they were poking gentle fun at us. The Star Trek fans have been getting the same kind of ribbing for decades.
I think it was a bit of a nod to how hypersensitive some of our folks have gotten, which is unfortunate. Still, in any group of people, without exception, there's always going to be someone who can't tell the difference between a mean-spirited jab and a friendly lampoon.

*laughs* Like the sitcom viewing public?
OK, ok... Kidding aside, it wasn't bad. I've been joking quite a bit, but... I realized right before going to sleep last night something deadly serious:
We're now big enough to warrant *named* attention on a national television show? Holy crap. Does that totally tweak anyone else out in the giggles kind of way? The kind thats totally serious because it suddenly dawns on you that we're popular enough to gain that kind of exposure, poking fun or not...
It's so weird XD

permalinkSo what was the plot? Not all of us have these fancy-schmancy "teevee" or "teevoe" thingamajigs, you know....
(Also, to Giza and co.: Any noticeable spike in traffic since last night? The "Welcome FOX viewers!" bit was some mighty good thinking---it makes you wonder if the fandom has just gained a fresh new batch of fans!)

My question is this?
Did they get permission to use the name AnthroCon?

permalinkNo, nor do they need to. Fair Use allows for use of a protected name in the context of parody or information. It would just the same if they made a passing reference to "McDonald's" in the context of a joke or comment, even in fiction.
I suppose if they said something proven harmful, then you might be able to make a case for a suit, but no judge is going to find anything damaging in that bit.

it wasn't bad I thought. The jerky Guy in sitcoms always learns his lesson. At least either people will be nice to us at this years con or they'll avoid parking garages one or the other. maybe we can send the Fchan guys the footage of the guy being surrounded by fursuiters. LOL

permalinkLooks like they made the YouTube vids private now. I think they referenced the CSI episode, about the wolf and the sheep being a couple and I could've swore I saw "Miss Sexy Kitty" (the blue cat) in there too!
I can't help but thinking after watching the episode how local reporters gets chosen to cover the Anthrocon report. Draw straws, lottery, etc. lol

I can't see the video clips... the suddenly went private...
Hey, if Anthrocon gets its name out... and in a good way, of course, then there really isn't any harm.
Actually, makes me feel kind of proud, working for one of the most well-known furry conventions in the world. ^^

permalinkX-Posted from a couple of lists. I just cut and paste.
I found the video again. This time of the entire show. Its on Fox.com
and its in their ON DEMAND section. you have to download their plugin
and they mention Anthrocon in the first segment of the show. They say they are doing the interview for their 10th anniversary of AC and give the fact that 2000 people show
for it, and that its at the David Lawrence convention center so they
at least ran a little research. Anyway, the scene that was on YouTube
is at around the 5:30-6 minute mark just before the 2nd commercial
segment. There is more in the 3rd segment and at the end credits. I would
say that it made the furries look fun and gave us a little bit of pride
towards the end. If anyone knows how to capture this episode from
FOX, I would like to get it.

permalinkI watched the episode, and I was a bit disappointed towards the middle.
After the interviews with the con members where he makes fun of them, they gang up on him while he is in the parking garage. One of the members speak for the rest of them, and tells them he didn't like what he was doing using condescending humor. The anchorman tricks them, gets in his van, and screams as a paw is laid his shoulder.
The news studio is on the air and switches the feed. He makes a remark something along the lines of, "I'm in danger... *the furries all turn to him* of staying the whole weekend." The guy acts all afraid and gives vocal hints he is in danger, and even mixes in "call your friends, call your family, call the police."
Even thought the interviews were sort of humoring, the public image of what happens in the episode threatens the public view of Anthrocon and furries in general.

permalinkActually, it does.
I let a non-fur watch it, generally he is open to such topics. he laughed at how terrible the costumes looked and asked if all the customes at AnthroCon looked that way. He did not watch the whole episode. I'm sure if he did, he would get an uncomfortable feeling how in the show they make furries look like they're some type of gang who will react upon those who say/do bad things about them.
