My flight cost is over two-thirds the cost of my hotel room reservation. And I'm not flying until June 25th.

$466. I mean, seriously, is our American dollar really getting that weak? There were a total of four available flights from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh round-trip. I can't stand hops. I just won't do it. I looked on last year's receipt... it was under $300. What made this price jump? Fuel costs? Bad economy? Strikes and issues with money management over at the airports?

And this is coach. 2 hours cramped in a tiny plane with some unknown person unintentionally squishing me. Two fat guys can't sit in the same row, people! XD

Hey, but AC's worth it. Always has been, always will be. Am I right?

You're right.

It's a mixture of all of the above. Skyrocketing fuel costs and a very weak economy, along with the many (and often ill-explained) surcharges that are put on for "security."

It's going to be tough to handle. And I'm one of hundreds flying to Anthrocon. I can only imagine what our friends across the pond are paying for their flights. *shudders*

Less than us 'Mericans. Disney World's flooded with foreigners right now because they're getting an awesome deal. Heck, for some Europeans, it was cheaper to buy a fight to and from the U.S. so they could buy their Christmas presents over here.

Travelocity's showing 4 nonstop trips Minneapolis-Pittsburgh
Wed & Mon for a total of $444.

If you're willing to add ONE stop, prices are $279 or $280.
If you were willing to add TWO, prices start at $241.

Amtrak would cost you $333.
It would involve changing in Chicago, and travelling 18 hours,
but it's cheaper....

Like I said, I won't do hops. I find it extremely inconvenient and uncomfortable... and a lack of sleep would be a problem. I've done it before flying to México and I won't do it flying to Pittsburgh.

I'm not one to really penny-pinch, though. I'm just expressing pain from unloading a wad of dough. @_X

That's cheap, considering my airfare costs. Average price roundtrip for me is $1000. Then again, I'm flying from Honolulu, Hawaii. haha

Heh, I should come an visit you when my bro and I take a trip to Hawaii, tenatively planned for 2009.

Unless my prediction about the entire economy collapsing in June '09 comes true.

But then again, I thought we'd have lots of snow in NJ this winter too (had a grand total of 3 inches), so everything'll be fine! :3

Imagine that. Orlando is Cheaper than Boston or Atlanta. And they're both sgnificantly closer to Pittsburgh.

What a lucky lucky city. Laughing out loud

That's converted from Aussie dollars to US dollars? Or is it really close?

($3,200 AD = $2975.04 USD)

Still, holy smokes. @_X

Took me an entire year to save up that much... and that's just for your flight? Yikes...

Hehe, well I'm spending 1600USD on the flight coming from Alaska. I've to take 1 hop before getting to Pittsburgh.

What time will you be leaving? Are you departing from MSP? I'll be stopping there, haven't decided what day I want to head out. I might fly out on the 24th or maybe the 25th.

And I thought spending $300 from here to Pittsburgh was expensive enough. Shocked

Hehe, I forgot to include I'm flying first class.

Coach costs 700-900USD depending on what airlines you take from Anchorage to Pittsburgh.

Keep in mind it has a lot to do with what day you're flying on. Flight costs are less expensive on Saturday and Tuesday, I've always found.

Also remember that you'll be flying during the summer, which is peak travel time. This means airlines like to bump up their rates, because people are going to fly no matter what to go on vacation (read: they're not hurting to fill seats, which is when they drop the rates on ticket prices.)

http://www.airfarewatchdog.com has helped me out in finding really good airfare deals that aren't advertised anywhere else, but it's a "strike while the iron is hot" kinda thing, meaning you should buy it the day you see it or it'll most likely be gone.

That happened back in 2006, I think. Went and tried to pounce on a cheap flight and it was pulled at the last moment.

Yeah, you have to act really fast on their deals. Pretty much only go there when you know you have the money available. But they're really excellent - I once got a spur of the moment flight from Atlanta to Boston off that site for $79.

Roughly $950 from London to Dayton - which has gone up around $150 since last year. Expected I suppose given the huge price rise in crude oil.

At this point I should note UK petrol prices: $9 gallon Sticking out tongue

Didn't Italy have prices of $12 a gallon there?

Just nuts.

I wonder if we'll ever have cars like the Knight Industries Three Thousand, getting 167 miles per gallon. Wouldn't that be the day?

wolfe's picture

I don't think it will ever happen, it would decrease the profits or they would boost the price to 50USD a gallon.

There was a really stupid movie I watched recently called doomsday. Out of all the disasters they could have picked... they ran out of gas. Maybe city people would all kill themselves, but us outdoors people wouldn't. I lived fine with a wood stove, carrying my own water in buckets, and I could have easily done without electricity and used oil(not fossil) lamps or candles. It ain't hard. Smiling

Seriously though, I wish oil wells would go dry.

There's always sunlight. That'll last us another 2.5 billion years. Oh, yeah, and the sun makes wind, too, which we can use as a source for energy. It makes the rivers flow as well, which we can use as a source for energy. We know how to make generators...

Alright, going astray.

Even for flights going to Europe, doing a 1-hop can take the price down by nearly two-thirds!

While the topic's on flights, I found this interesting:

http://www.southwest.com/hotfares/hotfares3.html (probably will only work until March 31.)

If you live near an airport that Southwest flies out of, I definitely recommend them! They can offer pretty cheap rates when other carriers can't, and I've never had a bad experience flying with them.
