I've been asked to make some "fun" paws for a coworker's kid...

I was thinking about tie-dying the fur to give it that zany sort of look....Anyone have any thoughts on if this is actually a possibility or if it would be a huge waste of time and money? I really hope it works though...

I suspect without very careful considerations, the colors would become muddy due to the nature of the fake fur's texture. That aside, it sounds like an awesome experiment to try. It may perhaps be better to airbrush the effect in, especially for so small an area... but not everyone's got one of those.

My experience in trying to dye fur is that I only got muted colors (pastel at best) with vibrant backings. Most fake furs are acrylic based, I believe, and don't take in colors from dyes (i.e. Ritz).

You'd probably be better off brushing in watered down acrylic paints, the kind for fabric, to get more vibrant colors. Or using an airbrush instead of a brush. I've never done this but I believe others have. Another alternative is oil based polish or stains. But I'd imagine that this would be prone to smearing on stuff with enough pressure.

Hope that helps some.

Remember faux fur is basically plastic, so dying is kinda lol unless its with a special dye.. however.

Thats just one, I'm at work so didn't really have time to look for more :3 Theres a whole TON of rainbow and tie-dye coloured furs out there, if you take the time to look. Save you time and money on dying the stuff :3

There are dyes that would work. However you would basically need to "boil" the fur in a dye with hot water. One type of dye is called "Basic Dye." Sounded like you'd need some rubber gloves to work with it.

I'd go with ArtSlave's suggestion and use fur fabric available that is rainbow patterned or tye-dye like.

How has your tests gone?
