I'll Email ya, although if i get a job soon, then i will be getting A HS Internet connection. And with that, I will be playing Second Life....
ALOT...
When one plays SL, One forgets about the world around him.
So Emailing ya back might not be as often as either of us would like.
How odd, I used Ya in stead of You in this post.

Never be afraid to just go up to indivudals and talk to them. I've found alot of people at AC to be wonderfully friendly and always happy to make a new friend. Artists are always happy to meet new individuals as well, I know I am. But dont be offended if we seem a bit..pre-occupied. Cons can be stressfull for us artists and we get swamped very quickly.
Look forward to seeing you there next year.

Yay! Other New Furs! Or more of, new To AC, not the Fandom. As I Hope you may of guessed, This too is my first Con, But with how i plan things out and how things are going, I am not that nervious.
Okay, that was a bold faced lie, but a good one
Yea, I am nerious, but only because i am a shy person. Other then that, I am good. I want to meet new furs, but i don't have the curage to do so. Or so i think.

Attending panels is a great way to meet people, especially because the people who are attending said panel tend to have a similar interest. (namely, the topic of the panel)
Also, if I can convince you to buy a Super Sponsorship, hanging out in the Super Sponsor Lounge is a great way to meet people, as it tends to be relatively quiet there with small groups of people who come by for meals.

permalinkAcctually I may just do that. Or can I? I dont know, do I have to be a specific age to buy it? I also have a website that im working on and I would be happy to advertise Anthrocon for free.

You don't have to be a specific age to buy a SuperSponsorship. However, if you are under the age of 18, you will need to either bring a parent with you to registration of have them fill out our permission form in advance. That is the case for all membership types.

I too have desided to be a SuperSponsor, although i am SURE that i said that already in a thread in the old Forum. And because they have free food there, its a great way to make sure you don't have to pay for to much when i comes to food. Just don't be picky.
Added note: LMAO, I just typed all of this in the CMD prompt of Windows. lol

Last year I was pretty nervous about AC, wondering where to go and what to do. When I finally arrived, it could not have been easier. If you're a fur, then spotting other furs will be a cinch (some are so blatantly obvious in a crowd).
Just make sure to hold onto money for cab fare and food.
Hopefully I will be going to AC '07, though my chances aren't as good now as they were before. I will be assisting with registration, hopefully.
This is a while from now, but things change pretty quickly.
Other than meeting new furs, what specific issues (that aren't listed in the FAQ) do you need help with or that you think you'll need help with?
Most of the folks here that have been going to Anthrocon for years will be able to answer it for you.
Despite going to AC I still consider myself a con newb because AC was my first furry convention ever.
But all in all, it's pretty awesome.

permalinkThis will be my first time going to AC as well. I've been to the Digital Life convention in NYC a couple of years ago...but I've never been to a furry convention before. I'm so psyched.
I have nothing to put on that is fur related...because I'm waay to poor for that. I really hope that I will have enough money to go next year. I calculated it, and so far the total is around 700 dollars, mostly because I don't have anyone to room with as of yet. My mother is still iffy about me going (mostly because I will be going by myself...even though I am 18) ; however she didn't disapprove. So I am saving up for the event ^_^.
If anyone wants to room with me... I'll give you my contact info, or you can contact me via the contact form on this site. and we can save up on some room costs. Peace!

A few notes:
- Furry uh, "appparel" is pretty cheap. I've seen tails sold as cheap as $25 in the dealers' room.
- We have a Room Share board that we'll be activating when the con gets closer. Sometime after the New Year, most likely.
- If your mom is nervous, bring her along.
My parents have attended before and they loved the event. The Chairman's parents attend every single year!

wish my parents were that fun. Most I could do is give my dad an ultimatum and either let me get rides from strange online folks to go to a meet in southern Ohio, or he could drive me there. Yes, I was 18 at the time, but they were still nervous about the whole idea. He finally gave up and drove me there. Funny too that he had lots of fun yet he still thinks negatively. Cant even get my mom to sit in the same room with a fur.
Dont matter to me much anymore, even though Id like to see them accept my interest, it doesnt matter much anymore cus im 22 now and ill be turning 23 the day of the con(July 5).
Just keep in mind that a lot of people dont take too well to furry and if you intend to tell your parents remember that introducing your parents to the idea should be taken slowly and over time so as to avoid the culture shock. I mentioned something about this on another thread, so ill just link to it.

permalinkPlease remember that nobody will mind if you don't wear anything furry-specific. The last 2 years, I wore animal-design t-shirts with normal clothes, and that was just fine with everyone.
Also, making friends now is fine. Don't worry about finding a roomie until January when the roomshare forum opens. February probably will be fine for working that out, plus March, even.

I see people wearing shirts from any number of other things not even close to furry. Star trek, star wars, Warhammer(both 40K and fantasy), Ozzfest, NIN shirts, other band shirts, joke shirts, Heck, I even saw someone wandering around with a shirt on that looked like a uniform. Probably someone got off work and decided to come check us out. Nobody cares what you wear at teh con, just as long as you dont come naked. That will be the only sort of wardrobe problem you could pose to the other congoers.

I really wanna go, but alas at 14 you must have an 18 year old with you and being a gay fur with my mom wouldn't be so good. So i'll have to fine a friend to go with. But there is Furry Fiesta in Austin i'm going to. I'll be going to AnthroCon in hopefully 2-3 years.....

You don't have to have an 18-year-old with you (although I do strongly recommend you not come alone if you are 14).
You would, however, need your mum's permission to attend, in the form of a signed (and notarized) permission letter which we have on our registration page. It's something that is a necessary evil for us, I fear!

permalinkLol What Uncle Kage said. I'm 16(well 17 will be my age of the coming up con).
But i did bring my parents, though they stayed in the room and mostly went around the city while me and my sister went around the con. But you don't need your parents. For the room, just room with someone 18. If your moms ok with it share a room with someone 18(friend, fur with extra room space, ect. ect.) ,and it shouldn't be a problem.
Lol Just don't do what i did and make sure to get it notarized. Otherwise you'll be really stuck. Luckly i conviently had my dad at the con Lol.

Actually, I've noticed over the years an interesting (and amusing) phenomenon. In a given year, one or both parents will accompany an under-18 person to Anthrocon. The following year, the under-18 person is not able to go...but the parents show up on their own.
Lesson: Your parents may not be as dull and mundane as you think!

Hey everyone, Dynamite here. ^^ I'm actually looking forward to also attending AC '07. Hopefully, I'll be able to reserve a room at Westin, but I wonder.... How many other people are taking off out of the state of MA? I'm nervous, not about flying, but getting to PA, and not knowing what else to do. x.x
Oh yeah, and this is my first post as well. ^^
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkWell, I can offer you some general advice, which you can take or leave,
whichever serves you better.
So long as you're of age, you can reserve a room at the Westin (or any hotel, really.) If you're NOT of age, you'll need to bring parents or a buddy who is of age who will rent the room-and take legal responsibility
for whatever happens in the room, which is the point.
Room reservations can be done by credit card, or by sending in a cash deposit as required (check or money order-see the hotel information.) If you reserve without a credit card, you will need to send in payment. If you reserve using a debit card, it is STRONGLY recommended you pay in cash or a credit card upon arrival, or else you'll block out a LARGE part of your debit card's finances to cover any possible expenses until weeks after the convention.
If you miss the Westin, IIRC, our overflow hotel was the one across the street, which makes it a few minutes' walk to the hotel's events, or the same distance to the convention center as it is for the Westin's guests. For now, it's silly to worry about reserving a room. Even the early reservers, generally speaking, are waiting until 2007 to reserve one.
Now, about flying...
I can only suppose which airport you're flying out of. My guess is Boston (BOS). If you haven't gotten plane tickets yet, then know that the sooner you reserve THOSE, the lower the prices you can get, depending upon where you look. One excellent source for the lowest possible prices is Travelocity. (Some people prefer Expedia or other companies.) When at all possible under current restrictions (or others, really), try to get either a nonstop flight, or get a flight where the same plane makes one stop first. (Otherwise, you have to change planes.) The advantage of that is that you can affect whether or not you get early to catch the first plane you need, but if that one is delayed, you can MISS the NEXT one. (If you have to change planes, it's good to allow for a larger layover in the airport you transfer in. Otherwise, you may find yourself running full-tilt with luggage. I've done that when I couldn't prevent it, and I don't recommend it, even if you're in shape.) That having been said, there's flights that are non-stop or one-plane from Boston to Pittsburgh every day that you can get a ticket for now. (And later,
the prices will only go up.) The catch, of course, is that if it's a tiny company, it might go under before the date of the convention. United Airlines uses Pittsburgh as a hub, so they get a lot more flights passing through Pittsburgh. You might consider flying United.
Allow a few hours before your flight to pass security. Check the restrictions on the airport's website and the airline's website, and review what's legal to carry as non-check baggage and as checked baggage. Otherwise, you may have to throw out a lot of stuff at the gate's security check.
The travel info section includes the ways to get to the hotel from the airport, and vice versa.
Ok, so then you get to the hotel without incident, because you planned ahead, then went to the front desk and checked in. Now what?
Well, I recommend going to the room, freshening up, and unpacking a little. Then you might look into getting something to eat, and seeing the local sites. There's a LOT of places to eat locally, starting with across the street, and down the block, and including the convention center. The posters and staff will also be adding more "Stuff to Do" as time goes on. Last year WAS our first time at a new hotel and city, after all. As it is, you can easily play tourist and visit the zoo and so on. Plus, unless you arrive Monday or something, there will be other conventioneers hanging out, and there's always volunteering for setup. There's always SOME department of AC that could use another pair of hands to help set up for the convention. A little checking, and you'll see there will always be more things to do than there will be time to do it in.

There are 10 nonstop flights from Boston to Pittsburgh, between United, US Airways, and JetBlue. According to Travelocity, the fares right now are around $180 roundtrip.

permalinkVulpus Rex offered the following on a different thread...
"How about going on an exploratory walk around downtown Pittsburgh? Once you have checked in - and been informed that a room will not be available until after noon - leave your luggage with the bell staff. The man at the bellhop/porter desk will store your bag in a locked room until you are ready to claim it later; it is customary to tip the gentleman for this - a buck a bag will usually suffice - but it frees you up to walk about unemcumbered, and play tourist for a bit.
After all, the convention itself pretty much spends Thursday setting up; nothing noteworthy happens until the Opening Ceremonies, a reception, and then a welcome dance that evening. Unless you have art to hang in the artshow (which can't be done until the panels are set up - hey, you can volunteer to help with that!); and if you pre-registered for AnthroCon, paying in advance for your badge, it will be waiting for you, you _don't_ have to spend Thursday waiting in line for that, it can be picked up any time registration is open. There isn't really anything to miss, if you play tourist for a while.
I did this just this year - walking down Liberty Avenue, I scoped out all the eateries, and made it almost all the way down to the park at Fort Pitt; I got sidetracked to the Three Rivers Folk Arts Festival, and walked back up Penn Avenue, saw the theater district, including Heinz Hall (Home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), several elegant stores selling all sorts of things, from the practical to high-end objets d'art, including beautiful crystal sculpture (Steuben Crystal).
Pittsburgh is full of neat things for tourists to see and do; while there, take advantage of the free time available, and see and do some of them. Check out the various chamber of commerce and visitors' resource websites for ideas.
Don't know what see? The Concierge Desk ususally has brochures and magazines devoted to pointing out all the entertainment and shopping opportunities, and all the sites (and Sights!) worth seeing, with hours of operation and costs of admission, if any. And then the Concierge him/herself can give advice, as a local. That is what a Concierge is for!
Concierges are as close to magical beings as most of us will ever find! They have resources that us mere mortals can't begin to approach - friends in both High _and_ Low Places, favors to call - and _some_ Concierges love the challenge of obtaining the unobtainable; the thrill of the chase, and all that...
If you want to go to a ballgame, for example, or see a play or musical, or get tickets to a concert, the Concierge can probably provide them...at a cost. The harder to find a ticket becomes, the higher the premium - but it doesn't hurt to ask. And if... - no, make that when the Concierge comes through, a gratuity commensurate with the difficulty of the task is called for."

I thank you very much BlackJack for that information. ^_^ I actually registered ahead of time for AC 07 (SuperSponser). And I am planning on taking off from Providence, RI (PVD). Now, with that out of the way, hopefully in two weeks time, I'll be able to save up for the air fare. Again, I thank you very much for the advice you've given. ^_^
P.S Anyone know anything about the new postage meter they're getting?
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkAccording to Travelocity,
flights from PVD to PIT, round-trip, that don't involve changing planes start at $255, round-trip.
Planes with a change start at $220, round-trip, and I personally think the difference for a nonstop flight make the nonstop worthwhile.
And the prices will only go UP over time.
