Uhm. Lemme think on this one. Noisia, Evol Intent, Matrix & Futurebound and Stratus are on my list of top favourite D&B artists. Good tracks I think?
- Stratus - You Must Follow (Evol Intent Mix)
- Absolute Zero & Subphonics - The Code (SKC Remix)
- DJ Fresh - Scream
- Rawtekk - Open Borders
- Noisia - Exodus (Instrumental Mix)
- Gridlok - Hollywood feat. ElHornet
I know some of these tracks are prolly dated but I don't follow D&B too closely.
Two pointers:
One, learn the basics on slower tracks. I know D&B is mad fun to play but from my perspective you'd probably have an easier time learning beatmatching on slower stuff (130-140bpm) with a four on the floor beat, then move on to breakbeats, then do the tempo upshift to D&B. That's just my perspective, maybe that's terrible advice, but learning to spin on house records to get a feel for which deck is uptempo or whatever is much easier than trying to figure out which track is going 1 or 2bpm faster than the other when there's thirty kick drums, hundreds of hats, a reese, a siren and some asshole MC screaming about cocaine at the top of his lungs.
Not that it doesn't make for good music.
Here's the most important piece of information I can offer you as a DJ though:
If you're not willing to go out and research and learn the genre you're playing intricately, you're gonna suck. I'm gonna say that flat out. Unless you have a serious passion for your music and pretty religiously follow happenings in the genres you play, or at least have sources to keep on top of new releases and tracks that people are caning to hell and back, you're really going to have a hard time getting anyone to listen to you. The reason you get hired as a DJ is because you're on top of or ahead of the curve and gonna play good stuff that hits the right chord with the crowd you're playing for. If you're asking other people to scope out tracks for you, you're never going to get that sort of relationship with your music or your fans.
www.beatport.com, www.junodownload.com or www.imodownload.com are some good places to go. Get on there, get listening and start writing down tracks and artists you like and looking into them. Also, www.dogsonacid.com is (or at least was) one of the best places for drum & bass news and new releases, as was www.breakbeat.co.uk.
Get to know your music. If you're not excited about it, you'll be hard-pressed to make anyone else feel that way.
