I'm running into a bit of trouble atm, still waiting on my mom to get things straight and still have yet to recieve notice from any of the applications I sent out. I REALLY want to go to AC '08 and I wouldn't miss it for the world but trouble times is starting to show and slow me down, trying to keep up with school finish commissions, lots of stress and the lack of being able to hang out with my friends too. I'm really hoping to make it this year, I still need to send out this DTD GAH! Mom is being so difficult and won't help me (not to mention work holds her back too....) anyways please bear with me and not be angry at me amy, kris, clay, volk, das, and tazz >. |

Sounds like job applications, or maybe colleges?

Yeah, I've been filling out job applications and they never call me or if I call them they're busy or the manager isn't there.

permalink*hugs* Just keep calling them and pestering them. It's what I do and generally works. ^^ You keep calling, they'll start to remember you more. Hope it goes well, definitely want to see you at AC!

Urrr...it can also backfire on you. A single followup call is usually enough!

permalinkMaybe I should've been more specific. By constantly calling them, I mean every couple days or so. If they say they haven't decided yet, call in a couple days. Always worked for me in the past.

May I also suggest contacting a temporary agency? They can give you work for a few days or weeks, and sometimes the companies that hire you will decide to keep you permanently. The pay is generally ok, you make good contacts, and it adds to your experience.

I'd also like to suggest getting a college or university education, either via student loans or, if you're smart, scholarships.
People tend to be frightened of student loans, but unless you've financially conducted yourself in a spectacularly poor manner, you should be able to get a good interest rate from Sallie Mae. In addition, FAFSA forms aren't all that complex!
If you major in something other than Liberal Arts, you'll probably even be able to get a decent job right out of college; I know I did!

permalinkYou might want to also see if any of your friends or your parents friends know someone directly or indirectly looking for help.
I'm more of a IT/Physical and Computer Security/Programmer guy, though I've done plenty of telco work as well. My friends tend to keep me busy, I've never had to really apply for anything, its all given to me. You should always work on building these types of relationships.
argh, one note though. Take note, I will mention friends and not acquaintances. I tend to befriend everybody no matter what the circumstances. Some friends are very old people, some which have given me jobs or contract work, and do have very different views. You must deal with them, and expect to listen to war stories. ^_^
Anyway, tootles.

permalinkAnother biggie I tend to suggest is targeting your efforts, as well..
As Uncle Kage mentioned, going for a temp agency is the best thing you can do in a pinch. There's always a slight chance of permanency, and even if not, it makes for work in the short term, and more for your resume for later.
I've tended to separate my efforts into two groups. I'd sign up with a temp job for the short term, then kept searching for something direct-hire for a longer-term aim. If you're looking for just about anything in computers, I highly suggest getting a position with one of the many ISPs across the state. Harrisburg/York area alone has at least two major ones, Embarq and Comcast. Getting a level one phone tech position is a great first step toward something better paying and more technical, as well as more permanent.
Keep this 'job path' thing in mind. At the risk of turning it into a game, I like to think of it in the same mental reference as an RPG. (All take a moment of silence for our fallen friend Gary Gygax). You don't just go from a level one rogue into a level twenty Godlike being of pure stealth and subtlety in one fell swoop. Take it in steps, learn each job as best you can, and for that matter learn every position at each job that you can. It's the guy that knows how to do every job on the production line that sticks around when the layoffs come.
Aaaaand okay, I'm done. Wow. It's days like this I'm reminded I've switched jobs entirely too many times.

If you're throwing them out, that might be your problem. You should be putting them in the mailbox.

permalinkShe meant "throw out" as in turn them into establishments for employment opportunities.

Oh man, really?
I should stop taking everything I hear entirely literally. It'll also eliminate my disappointment when I go outside and fail to see falling animals.

permalinkI see falling animals all the time but that's only because a friend enjoys his catapult with stuffed animals.
