Would it kill them to design visually appealing characters?

permalinkEh... they're no worse than Scrat from Ice Age.
The trailer shows off what looks like an impressive bit of work, but IMO, what it really could have used was a good sound designer.
(Thanks for the link, Theyain! I haven't been following what the Blender folks have been up to since Elephants Dream.)

Ice Age had ugly characters too, though. I agree with the above poster, this would do better if they at least designed the main characters to look more attractive.
That said, the animation work is impressive, but impressive animation does not make a good movie.

Movies started by the Blender company have never been done in an attractive way. They tend to make them more stylized (Such as Elephants Dream) or cute (such as this movie). But we're furries, so we're going to look at this in a different light then most people.
-----------------
The desire to dream is primordial. Some evolutionary process has instilled life on this planet with the ability to dream. It is essential to survival. Even dogs dream.

Visually appealing != Attractive
When I say "visually appealing", I'm not asking for sexy. Just for characters that don't look butt-ugly. There seems to be an unspoken rule in Hollywood lately that animated non-human characters have to be freakish. I'm just looking for critter models that don't make me reflexively recoil.
Big Buck Bunny, while well-animated, does not appear to involve appealing character designs in my opinion, much less "cute."

What kind of kid wants to watch a movie about animals with weight issues? I mean honestly, the bunny looks he was overfed car tires and the "rodents" look like they are belimec! Is that how you want to rasie kids?
But, i do say, some visually appeling charcters wouldn't hurt. Just take madagascar for example.

Or research old Disney 2-D animated films, pre-Pocahontas.

Well, i did a quick overveiw of movies before the indian girl era and i didn't find anything that stuck out except that movie makers nowadays are running out of ideas(see trailer) and that disney is bringing back 2-d animation. Other than that everything looked like good stuff.
