No, im not talking about your secret plans to take over Germany. I'm talking about your involvement in the furry fandom and if and when your parents know. Did you tell them or did they "accedentaly" find out by "browsing" on your computer? |

Once again, I have to ask, "Why would you get fussed at?" Just what do you think Furry Fandom is?

Oh, gosh! My eyes, they bleed. The blinking of the first and third are harsh on the eyes. I'd go with the second and just make it bigger.

I told my parents. Not too long after i started being involved, actually, although at the time i was part of a semi-isolated subset of furry. I don't know why some ppl think i would have been fussed at, but i wasn't; i told them i was involved in a new community of folks who were dragons online, and i kept them posted on my adventures there, and it was always fine. My stepmother thinks i'm a little weird, but she didn't need furry for that.
And no, by my standards, a year isn't all that long; i first started posting to the old newsgroup alt.fan.dragons in the mid-90's. When i was there, we had a tradition--the newest folks, those who had been around for less than a year, were Younge Nuttes. Somewhere around the end of your first year (or whenever you started to feel like a veteran), you changed from a Younge Nutte into an Olde Fruite. By now, i think they would say that my veteran status has passed Olde Fruite and gone into what they'd call an Aged Whine (specifically, a chocolate liqueur).

I told my parents I was driving down to King of Prussia for the weekend. (this was back in 1999)
Nothing spectacular about it, really.

I told my parents the first time back in 2001.
My mom didn't mind, but my father thinks it's very strange.
But he doesn't say more than that because I'm paying a good portion of the bills. >:}

Well, where i live. Some of the parents are REALLY uptight and they don't really warm up to anime real well. Just being seen by one of your friends watching balto or tlk will make you a laughing stalk pretty fast. But, it was late when i put"did you get fussed at". Just creating variety.

Where do you live? Some place where everyone's a stuck-up ass with a better-than-you mentality, even though in fact most of them have an IQ lower than my shoe size? (Los Angeles?) >:D

I know a couple good furs in TN. One of them's a highschool teacher who brings her Rescue Rangers lunchbox to work with her.
As for me, I've been strange my entire life so 'being a furry' is no big thing. Heck, I'd bring my mom to AC if I could afford to pay for someone to keep an eye on my dog while we're gone.

RR lunch box... priceless. But, im not saying the furs are bad, just some of the parents in the eastern side. And being furry isn't strange. It's unique(i've been assured by an unknown source;).) And also, if you can afford to go to ac, what's having someone to feed your dog while you bring YOUR MOM along gonna cost?

I know exactly where you are coming from with this stuff, I'm in East TN too, and there are times were its such a Pain to deal with the "previous generation" but there are other times where it might just be worth it...

Hahaha, I went to high school and college in East Tennessee. I can agree with parts of this statement *straightens his better-than-you tie.*
I'm kidding of course.

Heh heh. In general, I find the more a person thinks they know, the less they actually know.

I used to think in those terms, but I've matured a lot since I found furry. My mom caught on to the general idea of it early on, with my newfound affinity for wolves, so I showed her my commissions and told her that it's a essentially a convention of hardcore animal lovers. Now, she kinda wants to come to AC, and while I don't really want her tagging along the whole time, I think she'd fit in very well (she already barks and stuff, her behaviour is more "furry" than mine half the time).
For the last decade, I've either had my own computer, or had the sole administrative account on the shared computer, so her getting into my files was never an issue.

Since I'm 26 and sleep with a stuffed animal, watch cartoons, and pet anything fuzzy I get my paws on, when I explained to my mom what a furry is, she said, "Well yeah, that's you! What are you going to wear..." followed by sewing suggestions. She is very open minded and I consider her one of my best friends.

Nice philosophy alondro. I can second that.
Softpaw, i swear, if i told my mom and she kinda dipped in and start barking, i'd kinda have to move out, more than likely. Lol, venus Bunny. Your lucky your mom is open minded, as i said above, i kinda hinted my parents aren't as open minded.

Okay, i find this topic kinda interesting really. Here in Finland it's like, meh, whachafurry? And basically my parents are really cool (going to pubs with my dad even still) but they dont have to know everything, dont think there would be any problem about that though, but i said that i was going to America to an con, and they were like "righto" without even asking what con, might be that i live alone and support myself, so they dont care that much WHAT do i do.
BUT, the way my friend found out was rather different. First off back in the days, long ago, i borrowed a book from HIM that he was refering to as an "furrybook" and that was one of the redwall series. He thought it was cool, so did I, never told him i was a furry before, didnt think of it really.
SO, once we were (once again) drunk somewhere and i was telling him why i really am going to Americas and was like "quess wha'? I'm going to a furry con, like the people who dress up like animals and all, that's gonna rock!" he was like "a porn con?" which i explained to be untrue, ofcourse, and told some facts... never talked about this before one day he asked "so when you are going to that furry con?" I was like "WHAT? How do you know that" he replied... "toldcha you were drunk"
phew, long post
