Some important information (and requests) from the Westin

I've been talking with Michaela (who rocks) and Jaime (who rules) at the Westin. Our kind hosts were very pleased with us last year, but as always Anthrocon strives for continual improvement and I was anxious to hear from them how we can be even better guests in 2008. The ladies gave me the following, which I urge all Anthrocon attendees to read and heed:

1) This might sound a little silly, but if you're going to have a toga party, please do not use Westin sheets for togas. Bring your own. Washing extra sheets costs money, wastes energy and water, and in general puts additional burden on an already overworked housekeeping staff. While we won't point any fingers, I'm sure you know who you are!

2) Speaking of housekeeping, Jaime wanted me to remind everyone of a very, very important facet of hotel housekeeping: even if you do not want the room made up, the hotel staff needs to visit every room at least once a day to make sure that it is up to standard. This is not only a corporate requirement, but also something for which the local Health Inspector offers very little leeway. If the hotel wants to stay in business, they must comply. That means that even though you hang a "do not disturb" sign on your door, at some point the housekeeper must come in if only to do a quick check to make sure the room isn't on fire or anything.

3) They also would like our attendees to understand that the housekeeper likes to take out the trash every day, both for your comfort and so that the poor lady doesn't have to move a 400-pound mountain of empty pizza boxes and half-full Mountain Dew bottles at the end of the convention. We had a little bit more of that last year than is really necessary, so this year please be kind and let the housekeepers in to do their job so that they (and Jaime and Michaela) won't lose theirs. Now, Anthrocon does ask that housekeeping not start their rounds before 10 AM, so you should not get any knocks at your door before that, but at some point in the day the "Do Not Disturb" sign really should be taken down.

4) Please do not congregate in the lobby! There is another large group that is checking out just as we check in, and if people hang out in the lobby things will get chaotic very quickly. We have the entire rest of the hotel (including The Zoo up on the third floor) and big open spaces in the DLCC. Last year the crowds in the lobby were sometimes so thick that other guests - and yes, there are some non-furries staying with us this year - could not get through to the reservation desk.

5) If you are in the lobby, perhaps waiting for someone to join you at the fabulous four-star Original Fish Market Restaurant, please do not sit on the lobby stairs. After all, someone might step on your tail, or the chairman's white blur might come racing down from above and not be able to stop in time.

6) The elevators -- oh, yes, our beloved elevators! Did you know that there are two elevators that service not only the parking garage, but floors 1, 2, and 3? If you want to ride up to the 3rd floor from the lobby, or to the 2nd from the 3rd, and the escalators are just too far away for your tired legs, please use the Garage Elevators (located around the back of the main elevator bank, across from the gift shop on 1, from the business center on 2, and from the coat check on 3). We're going to experiment with prohibiting anyone from taking the main bank of elevators on 2 or 3, which means that if you want to go up, you must start at the lobby. That, or take the stairs -- it's good for you!

7) Please do not leave any personal items in the corridors or landings, especially if those items might startle and/or offend a nonfurry who happens to pass by. We want to be gracious guests, after all.

Lastly, here is a PDF version of the Welcome Letter that those staying at the Westin will receive when they check in. It contains much of the information above, but also a few more tidbits that not only Westin guests, but all Anthrocon attendees may find useful. Please read it over, and help us to give Anthrocon -- and all of Furry Fandom -- an even better reputation in the City of Pittsburgh than we already enjoy!

the stairs at {the Skywalk's} end allow access to the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom only.

Even though this isn't the Westin's problem, there probably should be a note that the stairs are locked when there are no events happening in the Ballroom (i.e., don't use it as a shortcut to the DLCC); I found this to be a problem during AC06, and thus avoided the Skywalk during AC07 except to get to the Masquerade, etc.

I had previously suggested a sign be put at the Skywalk's entrance noting when the stairs were locked, but I don't think that ever happened Sad

We do have a sign that says that the skywalk should be used for ballroom access only. In theory, if there's nothing going on in the ballroom we should not have to many people heading across the skywalk. If you do, you can always use the elevators at the end -- provided you have about 10 minutes to kill.

Good post Kage...

The post is absolutely hilarious to this business man/tech for rules 1-5. Really made my morning! ^_^

:/ Well I booked at the DoubleTree to get away from people, I was going to book at the Marriott. I'm not going to have these issues there with people, or noises through the halls/rooms am I? I need to work even while at the con. AnthroCon is not my sole reason for visiting Pittsburgh.

I suppose it doesn't matter. My friend who works at CMU offered me a place to stay with his family anyway. Smiling I couldn't ask him to drive and pick me up each time I need a break from fursuiting or to work, hehe.

I still haven't told him any of the reasons on in Pittsburgh, hehe... Won't he be surprised! Smiling

the only problem I have with that is that if you are a fursuiter, and you are not on the fursuiter floor. most of them might want to get off at the second floor for the walkway to the dlcc.. if you kill regular access to that floor from the hotel elevators, they will have to get off at the lobby, ride the escilators to the 2nd floor, or go up the steps, or use the garage elevators.

The wording in the section you quoted isn't very specific, but I think/hope that Kage means that the call buttons on floors 2 and 3 won't respond, while the buttons for those floors inside the car will still work. So, you can still get off on the 2nd and 3rd floor, but you can't get on from them.

Of course, if they are talking about disabling main elevator access to those floors entirely, I think you raise a very valid concern that needs to be addressed.

Exkhaniber's picture

I would think that he means using the Dorsai Irregulars to prevent people getting on at those floors, not disabling the call buttons. I don't think the latter is within his abilities anyway.

From the wording "taking the main bank of elevators on 2 or 3", it sounds like people getting on at those two floors. After all when you go to "take" an elevator, that is to board, not to disembark from within.

So I wouldn't worry about it.

There are two banks of elevators. One, the back bank, goes no higher than 3rd floor. The front bank is what most people use, and they're the ones that go to all floors.

It was suggested (and not just by the Dorsai) that the front bank be reprogrammed so that the down buttons on the 2nd and 3rd floor be disabled. If someone is on the 2nd or 3rd floor and needs to get to 1, the back bank and the escalators are both available and comparatively unused. The theory behind this was that we'd avoid the problem of people who really wanted to go up 'jump the line' by getting aboard while it's heading down from 2/3 and not getting off at 1.

The effectiveness of this is debatable. When the elevators are busy, 90% of the time a down elevator is going to stop on 3 because that's where folks are headed. If the down call doesn't work, it's just not going to matter.

So I believe that nothing came of the reprogramming idea.

We have always made allowances for fursuiters. We're not going to stop doing that.

I got a lil confused.. but still will fursuiters be able to get on the elevator from floor 2 or 3? or will they have to go down to floor 1?

I just want to clear things up..

Ok, I have a simple way of explaining it....
Going by my memory of the floor plan (which could be slightly flawed) this should give you an idea of what you can do.

These directions will work even if they build a wall in front of the doors of the main elevators on floors 2 and 3.

When you walk into the front lobby there are 4 elevators directly across from the entrance which go to all floors.
They are asking that folks not use these to enter or exit on levels 2 or 3.
If you are standing in the lobby, looking at the main elevators, to your left there is a set of steps, a gift shop, and a hall. The hall leads to some other "shops" as well as an escalator. Before you get to the escalator, there is a second set of elevators directly across from the gift shop. These are the elevators that they ask you to use to travel between floors 1, 2, 3, and of course the parking garage.

So if for instance your in your fursuit, in your room on level 20, and want to get down to the zoo.

do as follows..
leave your room, go to the elevator, travel down to the lobby (level 1). Once you exit the elevator and head out of the little hall where the elevators are, turn immediately to your right and you will see those stairs and the gift shop. Walk toward the stairs but turn to your right again once you pass a little podium stand. As you continue walking, you will see a set of glass doors straight ahead and a set of elevators to your right. Get onto one of those elevators and push the button for level 3. Exit the elevator on level 3 and head off to the zoo.

... no stairs, no escalator, and the only distance this adds to your trip is the distance from one elevator to another (which really isn't that much.)

Fursuiters will be catered to. That's been our policy since day 1 of having to watch the elevators. If you see an exception, let me or some other duty officer in Ops know about it, and we'll issue the appropriate correction.

Now, that said - read my description of the process lower down in this thread. If that doesn't make sense to you or you need more detail, reply to this and I should be able to clarify.

Yes, we have had two years of problems with smooth elevator flow. Nothing pisses people off more than to be waiting and waiting for one only to find people have loaded in the upper floors to ride down to ride up.

This year, we're going to try, at the busiest elevator, to only load them on the first floor, routing people coming over from the CC down to the first floor.

Some people are going to complain, but this really will make things smoother in the long run.

You laugh NOW - but sometime between turning 42 and turning 48, you will find that those knees of yours won't work like they used to. The Deep Knee Bend/squat exercises which you do now will suddenly just be squat exercises; the coming back up part? It's like your legs have forgotten how to do that. They say the first thing to go as you age is your knees, and I believe it.

I nearly damaged my knees (to the point of feeling like a knife being jammed into them) after doing a brief stint with UPS and then moving on to the trash company in driving a Recycle Truck and hoping out of that. Needless to say, it took awhile for me to even walk without limping. At least a friend bought me a cool looking cane to use. ^_^

Besides, canes draw better attention than a puppy. Eye-wink j/k

Actually, i'd always heard that the knees were the second thing to go.

Strangely, no one can recall what the first thing was... Presumed innocent

In regards to elevators - particularly on "Check-in" day - I would like to suggest that folks with bags or bins or lots of parcels or just plain stuff, refrain from filling an elevator with all your traps and belongings, and make use of the Bell Staff.

The Bell Staff are those people who meet you out in front as you drive up, with the luggage cart. They not only will take your bags into the hotel, but will deliver them to your room. If your room is not ready yet, the baggage can be stored with the Bell Captain, who has a small counter by the wall, where he can see everyone coming in or leaving through the front lobby.

The advantage of this is, the bell staff have access to secret, magical elevators, called "Freight Elevators". By using the bell staff, you free up a major chunk of cubic footage from the "people elevators", thus allowing more people to more easily and freely travel from floor to floor. You also get to make that journey without risking your arms being stretched or your shoulders dislocated.

Now - this is not a charitable operation; it is customary to tip for this (please see Uncle Kage's Guide to Tipping, elsewhere on this website), but the amount is a trifle, it makes us more desirable as guests, and it really is a joy to travel about the hotel unencumbered by stuff.

The suggested tip is a dollar a bag if he carries them into the lobby for you. If he takes them up to the room, a minimum of $2 per bag. Usually I'll just give the man $5, or if I have lots of very heavy bags (such as if I am traveling with my mother, who brings her makeup case and a thousand pairs of shoes), I may give him $10.

It's worth it not to have to stand in an elevator line, wrestle an unwieldy bag into a crowded box, and then drag that bag through the halls while trying not to drop my room key.

That, or take the stairs -- it's good for you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, and it's highly likely I am, but I was informed in 2006 and again in 2007 that due to the "crash bars" on the lowest floors of the hotel, it was entirely impossible to take the stairs from anything lower than the fifth floor without setting off the building's fire alarms.

There was also an issue two years ago with the stairways being locked, so that anyone who took them ended up being stranded inside the stairwell until someone opened it from the hotel floor. I don't remember hearing about this last year, but for the record, has this been addressed?

I don't remember hearing about it, either, which makes it extremely difficult for me to do anything about it.

I need to know exactly which stairway is said to have been locked, and on which floor the person was trying to exit.

It was brought up at closing ceremonies that year by at least one person (I was going to say something, but someone mentioned it before I got up to the mic), so based on your reaction, it was probably something easy to take care of that isn't a problem anymore. Sorry to bring up an old problem, I was just curious Smiling

For the record, both stairwells in the outer wings of the Westin were affected, and as far as I know, all of the hotel floors were affected; I was one of many who had to call a friend to be let out on our destination floor. Happened Saturday and Sunday at AC '06. I didn't even try the stairs last year because of this (and I didn't have any rooms to visit on nearby floors), so I don't remember whether it happened last year or not.

If it happens again, please let us know during the con so we can send someone to document it with pictures and the like. (Specifically, pictures of the area, signage, etc., since stairwells tend to look alike)

I personally used most of the stairwells in both the Westin and DLCC when I needed to get somewhere, and never encountered this. So I'm guessing that this is some really out of the way location.
