I'll be arriving at AC mid-Thursday....I'm hoping to be able to volunteer from the time that I arrive at the con...

I know set up occurs early Wednesday-Thursday...so my question is: will there be a need for volunteers in the afternoon on Thursday--I want to help, I just can't get there until mid-morning/early afternoon.

Any thoughts?

Oh yes, we'll need people on Thursday. Come on by Con Ops and we'll put you to work. Smiling

I would think so, yes.

Registration often needs a lot of help getting things put together, between the packets and the t-shirts and the reg desks themselves, and thursday is their big day, i believe. In years past, the work has gone pretty swiftly there, but that's mainly because they had so many volunteers doing it; every time attendance increases, their job increases too. It's never a bad idea to check in with con ops or the registration gang and see if they need another body; i believe a staff person's favorite 7 words are, "what can i do to be helpful?"

Also, the art show crew is often happy to have folks come and help them get things pulled together, so long as they know you're coming in advance. The union crew does the basics of getting the panels and pipe frames up, but the panels still need to be secured at the bottom and labeled, and the artist files and art show desk have to be set in order for the next day. Also, the union folks are sometimes in enough of a rush that the panels end up crooked and have to be redone. I wasn't there last year, but in '06 we were there until late afternoon or early evening, getting everything just right. The only quirk is that the art show staff do need to know you're coming so they can ask the dorsai to let you in. If you're interested, you might email petercat and ask him if he still needs folks for setup; the worst he can say is he's ok for that but would love some help at artist registration the next morning.

Yay willing indentured servitude! We love volunteers! Laughing out loud

What Des' said! The union crew is getting better about doing the Art Show panels correctly -- or to be more precise, I'm getting better at supervising them. They'll finish them off nicely if I show them how to do it, that's what they're paid for and they take some pride in their workmanship.

There's plenty to do in the Art Show from mid-afternoon Thursday, so please do stop by and help. When you sign up for volunteering in Operations, tell them you're interested in the Art Show. I'll have special setup badges they can give you that will get you past the Dorsai. But you will need to have gotten your con badge first.

Packet day mostly is Wednesday now, and some setup is needed on Wednesday indeed. But mid-morning and afternoon on Thursday is when registration most needs badge-checkers, badge-fetchers, sheepdogs (line guides) and mules (stuff-haulers). Last year we had staff/volunteers of 30+ at peak times Thursday and everyone was kept busy.

I'll also be there Wednesday, slaving away at the packet manufacturing, after getting there with the convoy loading-unloading. Gonna be a busy day!
