A very nice article in the Storque, the zine for Etsy, on anthro art and what inspires the artists that work in that style: Furry fandom really isn't mentioned in the article at all, just that art featuring animal people is COOL. I'm quoted in the article, but seem to be the only one involved with fandom of the various artists interviewed. Also includes some art history. I did leave a comment at bottom pointing people at Anthrocon is they really, really dig anthro art. For those unfamiliar with it, Etsy is a website for handmade crafts and art. It has roughly 1 million registered users and between its various pages, had 285 million page views in March. The Storque is its online magazine. |

Interesting article. I wonder how they would see art like Dark Natasha's...
"Furry is a state of mind."

A old, good friend of mine who goes by the name of Noelani Manawolf had described furry in such a way that it became a philosophy for me. Furry isn't just art or even culture. Furry can be a state of mind, too, just as in Indagare's signature.
Furry is a form of communication (quote, 2 the Ranting Gryphon), and is a way of humanity bringing themselves forth through divine image, giving sapience to the animals and creatures that we have responsibilities towards.
Anthropomorphism could be explained on so many levels.
The Aztecs, the Native Americans, the Ancient Egyptians, the Eskimos, they all once in their history proclaimed who they were as people through the images of animals that they worshiped and even seen as gods.
But then again... it could all be just for fun.

I think of furry as more a reflection of noting my premise to treat all highly intelligent life the same way, no matter what it looks like. It's simply a neat idea to me to think of how other intelligent species might develop culturally and how they might interact.
After all, if we ever do meet some aliens, the odds are that they're not going to look like us. There may be some commonalities, simply because some physical forms are more condusive to the formation of mechanical societies than others. *fully aquatic species would likely never develop electricity... they'd get electrocuted during the first experiment since water conducts electricity quite a bit more effectively than air* ;P
I suspect any advanced race is going to be cephalized (since we've seen that trait arise here on Earth several times as species evolve into more intelligent forms. It increases the speed and efficiency of information processing in the higher functioning regions of the CNS to such a degree that it's hard to imagine how intelligence could develop in a creature with no centralization of the brain.
They will also have to have hands or other limbs with similar functionality and flexibility. Invention usually requires one to manipulate objects very delicately and specifically, and that requires the physical ability to do so. Octopi might also manage it, since they can perform some very amazing feats of dexterity with their tentacles (such as unscrewing jar caps, which almost no other species besides humans can do). So smart critters with tentacles are in the realm of possibility.
(And the hentei fans rejoiced.) ;P
As for other physical traits, vision is vital, especially color vision with 3-D processing. The ability to form speech or other method of language communication is critical, so one would expect convergence of such traits even between different worlds as well.
Other than that, fur scales, snouts, tails, extra limbs, whatever; they don't matter other than making social habits and aspects such as clothing and hygeine different. If an alien has the brain power and a few little helpful dexterity traits, it can make a machine.
PS: And... furreezRTEHSEXYlulz :B
