Tiger tail

I just got done constructing my tiger tail. Except I got pure white fur, cause it's too hard to find good white tiger fur. So I was planning on painting the stripes on, I heard someone suggest that before. My question is, what kid of paint should I use and how should I do it so I don't make the paint clump and stick the fur together. Any particular way on how to do this? Thanks! <3 |

Airbrushing is the best way I've heard of...and you can get airbrushing guns and air compressors to run them fairly inexpensively.

Well I can't buy an airbrush, so I was thinking howabout just lightly spray painting it? Would that be cool?

Spray painting is going to give a pretty uh, "dense" coat. Plus, it will smell. I know. I've tried.
You might want to look into fabric paint. I remember I used some many years ago when I was doing some costuming. I don't recall a brand name though. Sorry.

If I may jump in and add my own suggestion, you can skip the trouble of paint, and just get a hold of a soft short pile faux fur that is black, cut out the stripes individually, and then sow each stripe onto the tail. That might only work if you haven't already sown the whole tail together...but there is a reason they create little de-threader tools.
I have a Tiger tail to make for someone at AC...and the above tech is how I am doing it.

Yea I finished it already.
It's cool though. The paint I got made the fur just sort of hard and stiffy and faded in some parts so I colored all the stripes in again with a magic marker. That seemed to work really well.

Just be very careful not to get your tail wet! Marker runs and running stripes == stress for you! Good idea though, markering it!

For the future, Jacquards Textile ink works best on fabrics...seeing thats what it is for. It comes in many colors, paints on easily with a brush, and if you get the 'heat set' you dont have to worry about heatsetting it yourself.
Its what I use on my CATS style suits, my screen prints, everything really. Super easy to work with, and realitivly inexspensive. And one bottle goes a long way if you add a bit of water to it.
