Methods for chest building?

I'm trying to find methods to building the chest of a suit. I've seen a few suits which have a shaped chest, how is it accomplished with most suits? I've thought about a type of expandable slot which I can put material, but I don't know what material I could put in there which is permanently shaped. I don't want to permanently affix any material to the fur as it would be more difficult to clean a suit and have the whole thing dry. Any ideas or examples? |

I am only a fursuit fan not a builder but for the shaped material to put in a slot I believe it's just foam.

D: so I probably need to go get a dremel for the EVA foam...
The cost alone for all the tools to build a fursuit is expensive. The overlocking machine can be used to make my own clothes, which makes me happy. ^_^ 799USD for a pfaff isn't that bad for a basic, it can be hard to justify. Maybe I can earn the money back by building people fursuits.

ah, hehe. I can probably just permanently affix it since it is EVA foam... its waterproof. *duh duh to me* ^_^

I've gotten my best results from dumbbell presses and chest flys. It's the stress on the core from the limb separation that really shapes up the chest.

Thought I'd toss out a couple links for you:
http://werevarmint.timduru.org/wvpadsut.htm has several suggestions on way to build padding.
http://www.chameleon.net/~diadexxus/vortex/body/body.htm has a short description and pictures of a muscle suit.

Thanks for the links. ^_^
I'll have to play around and see what works best.

Simple open cell or polyurethane foam works and is much cheaper than EVA.

EVA foam is only 90USD for a 2" thick by 40" by 80"... its cheap. Free shipping to the drop off point before I can have it sent to me. Unfortunately I'm kind of remote so I must pay a forwarder.

Look at me whining without giving a solution. Good game.
Joanne fabrics has foam in a wide variety of thickness and densities, generally for the cheapest price around unless you have a foam warehouse nearby.
It ranges up to 55 a yard(For 5" thick) after taxes, per yard.

o.0 I don't think you're talking about the same foam. EVA foam is a closed cell foam which can very in stiffness.
I've plenty of normal open cell foam, and even lots of memory foam I picked up really cheap. I won't use memory foam on the body, but for tails only.

o.0 EVA foam can be made at many levels of hardness. I think 30 under the chest would do just fine and a fursuit would still be squishy depending on the length of the fur. Maybe if I were making a slim costume I'd put some type of padding between the fur and foam. It would be nice if ballistics jelly was light as a feather, but oh well.
Who knows, in 30 years robotic suits will be affordable and people can layer the suits with their own creativity, aka fursuit on a robotic suit.
