I know that Anthrocon has some statistics on how many people attended the con, where they were from, and how old they were but I was wondering if anyone knew if there were some way to figure out about how many furries there are in the world. I've tried the Internet Furry Proximity Locater but that doesn't seem to answer overall population (plus I know there are some furs living in South America and Mexico but the map mainly lights up North America). Help? |

You're taking on a daunting task. For a long period of time, I thought I was the only fur in Minnesota, until years later I would meet dozens and eventually hundreds of furs. And this is just one state.
There really isn't an accurate way to find out how many furs that there are in this world. New furs are being discovered all of the time.

permalinkAlso, a lot attend these conventions, but don't consider themselves to be a 'furry'

There really is no way to tell. Not all furries attend conventions and many furries attend multiple conventions, so simply adding up the attendance rates at cons would not give any meaningful information.

In addition, you could probably make the argument, depending on how you defined 'furry', that there are more furs out there that aren't aware of the furry community, in some cases because they don't have 'net access, but still fit well with what unites us as furs.

I agree. It was a WHILE before i discovered that there was an actual name for it, let alone a whole furry fandom!

I don't know if this helps but In 2007, the University of California, Davis Department of Psychology did conduct a survey about living standards and social attitudes of those from the furry fandom via Livejournal including the nationally. Its similar to the AC 2007 statics but with other questions not asked. 600 of these took the survey. This should only be used as a rough idea of what the typical fur is like and not regard it as 100% true.

Thats the survey right there, but to get to the main point, 83% of those said they were American. I think this does show a good idea that most furs tend to be from the US despite a growing fanbase in other parts of the world. Even the largest convention outside of the US, Eurofurence in Nuremberg, Germany drew about 585 attendees last year, with the next largest RBW UK held in jolly ol' London, England with a mere 242 in attendance last year. I wouldn't rule out that theres a significant amount of furs in Central and South America as well. I think the problem is people in those countries tend to have a lower level of income then that of the US, Canada, and Europe and cant afford to travel too much to other places for fur cons or host big cons like we do, so they usually come in the form of small private gatherings. As Conway said though, not every fur goes to a fur con.

One of the limiting factors to convention size in Europe is venue. In the USA we have large hotels with lots of function space that can be rented for a relatively low price. In Europe, large hotels with large function spaces come with equally large bills.
