Also, why not ask your mom to come along to the convention? The Chairman's parents attend every year, and mine are attending this year. Let her see first-hand what the con is about; she'll probably have a good time. We are also working on a "so, your kid dragged you to this convention" type of panel for the parents.

You can also tell them that some of the attendees are brilliant super-genius Master's Degree-carrying biologists... like myself for instance! :3
And that your online monikor stands for Bone Morphogenetic Protein 1-12, which would be the BMP1 metalloproteinase with perhaps an unspecified polymorphism at amino acid residue #12, which is normally a glycine. Or the '12' could refer to the fact that BMP1 is a member of the peptidase M12A protein subfamily, which are peptidases unassigned to any specific class, one other of these being a component of snake venom. They'll be impressed. ;3

Agreed. She may not want to spend the whole day at the gather, but part of a gather is better than no gather at all, right?
For further stuff to share with your mom, you could also do a little digging and pull up folks' photos from last year--most end up looking a little like a less commercialized, low-key disneyland. You could even cherry-pick a few conversations from this message board, so she could see what sorts of stuff we talk about and how we talk to each other.

There should be no reason for your mom to love you any less just because you are furry.
Dont be afraid.
And Like the others say....Take her along with you. The fandom is for everyone to enjoy.
When I told my mother she understood that it was my choice and supported me for it
(Kinda like how I joined the military)
Heck SHE even wanted to go to the convention and see whats up
And I will go with the other guys as well.Let her read the facts and various posts for better understanding

If you so desire, I've talked to a few "newbie furs" parents on their behalf to ease their folks into it.

Actually, now i think of it, why not invite her to come talk to us here?
The board's pretty darn clean, she'd be talking to some of the same folks you'd be meeting at gather, and there are a lot of folks around, like giza and kage and sgt. steve, who are founts of useful information and good PR. IIRC, the last time a furry parent turn up on the board, we seemed to to a pretty good job of making that guy feel welcome and at ease.
Just a thought.

Just a warning here, your email address is now promenently displayed for the use of bots who sniff around the internet; especially bulletin boards, zeroing in on "@" and adding it to SPAM lists. I recommend you edit that and put it some other way like:
Vegacaptain(AT)yahoo.com
Vegacaptain(amphersand)yahoo.com
Although some bots are programmed to grab those too. Most people will figure it out with no problem
