This will be my first time traveling someplace further north then Tennessee, and I'm wondering whats recommend to bring clothing and article wise for the weather up there during the con.

1. During the summer it's a sure bet it'll get very warm and humid all over the States. How warm and humid does it get though up there? Will I need to bring some OFF even?

2. Does it rain a lot in Pittsburgh? Will it be a good idea to bring a umbrella?

3. And does it get chilly at night where ill need to bring a jacket or overcoat?

This question came up last year (the Search function is your friend!). To update the information I posted then:

You can look at past weather information for Pittsburgh here. Looking at the more detailed info here, here are the readings at noon on June 28 at Pittsburgh International Airport (a bit outside downtown):
2007 TSTRM 75 F, 90% humidity, low that night of 65 F
2006 MOSUNNY 78 F, 54% humidity, low of 57 F
2005 PTSUNNY 89 F, 68% humidity, low of 64 F
2004 CLOUDY 69 F, 70% humidity, low of 53 F
2003 SUNNY 80 F, 37% humidity, low of 59 F
2002 SUNNY 81 F, 47% humidity, low of 56 F

So there you have it. As for rain, Pittsburgh isn't particularly rainy or particularly dry, really - mainly just average.

As an attendee the last 2 years, I'll give my opinion.

1) It's t-shirt weather the entire convention.
It doesn't hurt to carry bug repellent, but I didn't see any usage of mine. The con area
is pretty urbanized, so trees and nature are in short supply. (Bugs like those.)

2) I pack an umbrella. And got caught in the rain one day out of 2 conventions.

3) I don't remember it going below t-shirt weather. I brought a long-sleeved shirt to
wear while traveling to and from Pittsburgh (air conditioning.) It stayed in my luggage
while I was there, and came out again for the trip home. BUT, there's one or 2 rooms
in the convention center-next to the Headless Lounge- that are a LOT colder, so if you're
going to hang out in one of those, you'll want a long-sleeved shirt.
(That came up last year-the table-top game room was freezing.)

I missed the part about bug repellant in the first post; definitely not something you need in downtown Pittsburgh. Even the typical flies and gnats are in very short supply there.

Of course, YMMV. For me, last time i attended i spent most of the gather switching back and forth between sleeveless and light long sleeves (i very rarely wear t-shirts; just me). If i was doing a lot of moving around, or if i was outside, i didn't want sleeves. If i sat still for a time, i'd start to shiver if i didn't have 3/4 to long sleeves. This year what i'll probably plan to do is wear a sleeveless shirt, but carry my jacket or a hoodie.

Then again, i seem to run colder than a lot of people i know; i'm always among first to get cold at work, and every time i go to the supermarket, i get goosebumps. Or maybe that's just my produce paranoia... Eye-wink

1. During the summer it's a sure bet it'll get very warm and humid all over the States. How warm and humid does it get though up there? Will I need to bring some OFF even?

Off is a good idea .. Summer and humidity (especially since Pittsburgh is SURROUNDED by water ) means mosquitoes .. so do bring Off!

For my experience , in 2006 The days we were there were so damn humid ..I remember sweating like crazy .. In 2007 it was much better and sometimes breezy..

I guess it depends on each year ^^

2. Does it rain a lot in Pittsburgh? Will it be a good idea to bring a umbrella?

2006 , no rain .. 2007 The first day we had rain .. (on the thursday) and not a little rain .. it was borderline tropical rain XD
You don't really need to bring an umbrella , I know a lot of hotels can lend you one for a while..

3. And does it get chilly at night where ill need to bring a jacket or overcoat?

It's always a good idea to bring one or two sweaters just in case .. you never know ..

1. I didn't notice any bugs, but I had my own personal bug magnet with me. My travel companion is one of those people that attracts every mosquito and gnat in a five mile radius. She didn't seem to be attracting bugs.

As to temperature, remember, you'll be indoors for most of it! I suggest a t-shirt and bring a zip up hoodie with you.

I did last year and STILL froze my ass off in the game room. World_Dancer and I ended up sharing a chair in the game room and huddling for warmth. I ended up with my teeth chattering. Not kidding.

Now, I'm little, but I was wearing socks, long pants AND a sweater and was still freezing. Some area of the convention center are really cold. If you'll be sitting still, you'll freeze your tookus off if you didn't bring a second layer.

2. Both times there's been one day of torrential rain. Its short lived, but its typical summer thunderstorm rain where its like the sky opened and someone is pouring a bucket on you.

I got drenched to the underwear walking two blocks the first year I went. It was raining that hard the Monday morning we left.

Bring an umbrella. You might not need it. But if you do, you'll be glad.

3. Nevermind at night. It was perfectly pleasant at night. You may need the coat in the convention center!

The game room was frigid because of the bleed over from the headless lounge. The ballroom is pretty frigid when its not filled to capacity. Once its filled, it may be a bit warm. The temperature varies a lot but I generally found it cold in most places.

Last year it was bloody MISERABLE. This year it's looking to be nicer.

Keep in mind, you're going to spend most of your time inside, though.

If you want a weather source you can trust, I strongly suggest going to the horse's mouth: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Pittsburgh&state=PA&site=PBZ&textField1=40.4392&textField2=-79.9767&e=0 You won't get more than a week's forecast there, though, but after about 3 days it's all guesswork anyway Eye-wink

Keep in mind the 10 day forecasts aren't always accurate, etc.
Last year I don't remember it being rainy--hot for a day or so, yes...
I do remember the forecast calling for possible thundershowers on
Friday. I brought my umbrella with me for the walk to and from
Buca di Beppo. I didn't need it: It was sunny and a bit warm.

Next day, a walk to the same area so I could take the incline. Sunny,
warm, but not extraordinarily hot. Maybe there was rain on the Thu.
last year, but I didn't get there till Friday morning.

As of early Wed., June 18, they're calling for chance of thundershowers
but on the Sun, Mon, and Tue BEFORE the Con. It says sunny (high 81 low 64)
for Wed and partly cloudy (high 82 low 66) for the Thu and that's all it
says so far. And it says relative humidity should be fairly low. As we
get closer to the Con we'll see what it says.

And now, it's June 21st and weather.com says there's thunderstorms forecast for Wednesday through Saturday. Earlier it said there'd be sun on all days of the con.

It's now June 23rd. Weather.com says it will be sunny on Wednesday when we arrive but it also says there will be thunderstorms on all days of the con.

Anthrocon is very near indeed.

The report I saw said 20-30% of precipitation.

So that's what, storms for 5-6 hours out of every 24? I think we can live with that.

Actually when you hear there's a 10 percent chance of rain, that means that out of the last 100 times the weather conditions were just like they are now, it rained 10 times.

Doesn't have anything to do with the amount of time it spends raining. Smiling

Exkhaniber's picture

Is that so? I always heard that "10% chance of rain" meant that 10% of the region was getting rain. Therefore, if you lived in the region, you had a 10% chance of getting rained on.

It's what I've always heard. Doesn't matter, around here it seems weather is almost always the opposite of what they forecast anyway.

-Estimated six so far. Let's hope it doesn't go higher!

Uzuri's picture

20-30% in PA means possible pop-up storms between 7 and 10 at night, and you may or may not even get them. Don't worry too much about it.

Uzuri's picture

I don't trust the 10-day much, and I don't trust weather.com at all (they exist to sell advertising and hokey disaster "documentaries"), but the trend seems to be toward a cooler summer this year--note that I'm relatively close to Pitts. PA; we get very similar weather. Cooler means less likelihood of nasty storms.

The other thing you have to understand is that in this area, if you don't see "20% chance thunderstorms" every day this time of the year, you question whether the weather man was totally awake when he put the forecast together.

How am I going to get to the convention center if we're going to have that kind of weather?

We can't walk; we might get struck by lightning. We can't take a taxi; they're hard to flag down and we'll be spending too much money on it. We can't use a rental car; we'll have to park in a parking structure and walk through the rain to get to the convention center, and we might get struck by lightning.

To Gushousekai195, I wouldn't worry about lightning - it'll hit the buildings, not people on the street Smiling

Yeah, I have some workarounds published here.

I've been getting them too. It appears to be related to capacity, and the fact that this site has been receiving record levels of traffic. After the con, we're going to be looking at new hosting options.
