Just as it sounds, Saturday night-probobly around 830pm.
Rules are: 18+, valid ID only, if you want to attend, please bring a bottle of your favourite(UNOPENED BOTTLES ONLY. Sorry, past conventions have taught us a thing or two about tainted drinks
). Please bring your own glasses, as we only have a few. Overly imbibing not suggested, as we're not providing floorspace on which to crash :3 If you drink too much and get rowdy, or start to nod off, we will request you return to your room(And provide an escort, in all liklihood).
There'll be some posters up for it as to which room its' in.
If anyone is interested in this, please leave a post so I can count heads and gauge possible interest :3 So far I shall be bringing the following from my favourite vineyard-
+May wine: A surprisingly light and sweet, easily drinkable dessert white.
+Ravenscrest: Rich, bold and swee, dessert red.
+Steeplechase: Velvety smooth, heavy oaks- heavy bodied red.
+Mead: Tastes like pickled honey. Yick
+Either Daffodil(Well-seasoned white) or a blush(Zin, maybe) of some kind.

Count me in. More than likely my bro as well. We've spent many a night drinking a good bottle of Merlot or Pinot Noir. I'll bring a couple bottles along as well.

That was a typo, not used to alcoholic events.
Obviously only those of legal drinking age will be allowed.

Well, that's fine and dandy in a restaurant. This event, however, will be held in a hotel room. ;p

Of course there is something to say for having a bottle of wine on a box.

Actually, some of the best French Wines(At least those not in the thousand dollar range) have recently been packaged in boxes to preserve flavour- if you buy an 18 year, you want an 18 year, not something still aging. Some are actually quite good.
Now, if its like.. sutter home white zin in a box, thats different, lol.
But can't judge quality of a product based on the packaging. I mean.. canadian milk comes in bags, for heavens sake. lol.

permalinkBox wine is good wine like McDonalds is a five star restaurant.
Though, there is one wine I did try which is probably worse than any box wine I've ever had before...
Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio 2005... yeah... I bought it because the bottle had a kangaroo on it. ;_;

permalinkYou may want to reconsider the start time for the party. If I recall last year's schedule correctly, on Saturday there is the Variety Show and Uncle Kage's Story Hour. Both are heavily attended - (You wouldn't want Kage to miss a wine tasting.)
Also, moving it to a later hour gives your attendees the option of making it their last event of the evening as opposed to trying to go out and do something afterwards.
I would suggest 11:00pm - 1:00am as preferable.
I'll try to bring of box of something nice.

And of course you'll want to leave time for the dorsai to inspect those wines very carefully; they're very conscientious souls, and wouldn't want you drinking anything that might be defective or dangerous.

Unopened only- so unless its' been badly aged(Which will be noticable immediately apoun tasting). However if they want to check to ensure its not poisoned
They're welcome to do so.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be moving on it. 11pm sounds much more reasonable. Just bring a bottle/box of your favourite

11pm will conflict with the mature art auction. It's also past Kage's bedtime, if you hope he might stop by to, umm, inspect the wine. Yeah, that's it. Some off-duty Dorsai might be interested in lending their expertise as well.
The big-event schedule hasn't been finalized yet, but I've seen a preliminary version. All I can say is that it will probably be different from last year, unless KP decides it would be better another way, but a 10 pm start time may be practical.

Not to sound like a D.Bag, but I can't please everyone :3 Nor is it my job to. Those who want to attend, will. Besides, so long as it conflicts with one semi-major event, it will cut down on the number attending, since it is in a double room, I don't have room for several dozen people :3 Besides, I don't forsee anyone staying at the art auction for two hours straight? As far as Kage stopping by, if he wants to then he will :3 If he's tired, then he won't. I can't please everyone, and I hate shifting schedules around for ebers. Doesn't 10pm conflict with kage's story hour? I wouldn't want to miss that, although I don't mind missing the Mature art auction, and I need some time to set up anyways.
Long story short: If you can't make it at 11, sorry to hear you won't be coming, but 11pm works best for me :3

I may be interested in going if it is going on after the variety show and Uncle Kage's Story Hour. For these cons, those kind of shows tend to be the highlights for me.
I have yet to find a wine yet that I like and all those you've listed with the exception of mead I have not tried before.
There is a Vineyard that the Virginia Reneissance Faire rents land from for their show. I'll grab a couple bottles from them to bring.

Hm.. if you've been to the VA renfaire you might've passed the gents by who I pick bottles up from. They're called Linganore- http://www.linganore-wine.com/ and while that won't help with figuring out what they taste like- all of their wines are exceptionally drinkable. I prefer the sweet stuff, so many of their darks appeal to me because they integrate alot of local fruit and honey in their aging processes. Anyways, you'll get to sample some this year :3
Also its' going to be moved up to a more reasonable time, such as 11pm-1am.

Are you thinking of the Maryland Renaissance Faire? Altho, there are two locations in the northern virginia area much further north than where I live. I also don't generally go that direction when I visited the Maryland Renaissance Faire. I usually take the back way across the Nice bridge.
The Virginia Renaissance Faire is a small affair, altho getting bigger slowly. They have made good relations with the Lake Anna Winery and now have a semi-permanent location each year.
The VA Faire used to be run by the same folks that runs the MD Faire. But it was closed down years ago. A group of SCA type folks here in VA decided they wanted to start up the VA Faire again and for a time were like a roaming gypsy caravan moving from place to place.
I look forward to your event.

As this is a first attempt, I'm gonna say no this time, just because I don't want even the vaguest possibility of incidents. Not saying you'd try to dope us all, kill us and sell our kidneys on ebay- but if this works out well, then in the future I will say a definate yes! I bottle my own beer and as much as I'd like to bring it I'm not going to just because I want policies to be straight across the board. Next time, perhaps :3 Although if you wanted to bring a small sample anyways to be tasted sometime other than the party I will gladly risk my kidneys!! lol

permalinkYou know some of us do home brew/small company or have friends who allow us to make our own wine/mead/some other type of thing I never heard of. How would you really be able to tell when they go through the process to label and cork the bottle?

Quite true about the cheese, but the acids in a well paired wine loosen the milky fats enhancing the flavors of both. Smoked or strongly flavored cheeses are hard to match so pairings are typically lighter varieties. A little bread with or between cheeses sets them apart for the next combination.
Chocolate and a robust Cabernet Sauvignon is another classic pairing that complements each.

I'm going to be bringing some granny smiths and a few cheeses- gruyes and goudas and perhaps some chocolate cake. If you'd like to bring more, that would be fantastic :3 Some crispy bread would be amazing, and would give something to add to the cheeses for those not drinking wine(Of which I imagine will be very few), as well as something to cleanse the palate.

Pittsburgh's Strip District collection of markets and specialty stores is just down the street from the convention center. Sunseri Bros. on Penn Avenue ~1900 block (http://users.cihost.com/ata/strip/p8.jpg) has a large selection of cheeses. I'll stop by there and/or the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company for fresh breads. Like most markets in the Strip they close early around 4:30-5:00pm and the best bread selection is early in the morning.

permalinkdo not take this as legal advice, I'm just giving information out which is readily available
I should've mentioned this earlier but couldn't find my refs.
http://www.lcb.state.pa.us/plcb/cwp/view.asp?a=1334&Q=546255
Here are the laws regarding alcohol, which is controlled byt he LCB. I don't drink alcohol much but some do and think the PA laws are not so friendly.
Please take the time to read the paragraph "Possession or transportation of liquor or alcohol" under Section SECTION 4-491. Unlawful acts relative to liquor, alcohol and liquor licensees.
For those who bring alcohol out of state, keep in mind to not transport over a gallon and make sure you bring receipt of purchase if you bring alcohol in state.
The restrictions in place are for the pennsylvania citizen's good. You'll notice alcohol, tobacco, ammo, and other prices are higher compared to other states. The taxes go to state programs which help every citizen of the Commonwealth. i.e. healthcare, roads, justice, free counsil programs, and many many more. Pennsylvania doesn't have a huge deficit like other states, they've a surplus.
Pennsylvania is a good state compared to many others.
You know, I'm glad I've never been a smoker. The governor is wanting to raise taxes on tobacco another 10 cents. The taxes last time were raised 25 cents, it just keeps going up.

The vast majority of 488 was repealed in 197.. 6 or 9. These laws are all outdated, and the remainder expired in 2007. As far as one gallon goes, those are miniatures only, and we're not dealing with minatures :3 Transportation of full bottles from another state is totally legit. Don't worry, I know my PA liquor laws quite well. Although I appreciate your attempt to prevent trouble.
As a sidenote: Pennsylvania provides some of the cheapest ammunition of the east coast, as long as we're talking shotguns and rifles. I don't shoot pistols so I don't know how much pistol ammo costs here.

Pistol ammo is dirt cheap here too. I bought a couple boxes of 9mm ammo and it averaged out to just about a nickel a bullet.

permalinkAmmo is going up in June. ^_^ Every time it does, you hear every NRA member complaining months before it happens.
X) I'm not going to get in to a argument here, but I perfer larger than a 9mm. The ammo starts to get expensive, especially when you're shooting higher calibers in the .40s up. You'll hear the people complaining though who shoot 223(5.56) and other rifle relates ammo.

permalinkWell it went up April 1st too. I think these are mostly single companies who raise the price for their ammo. Remington and Winchester prices are going up on June 1st.
I shoot Remington, I guess I better stock up too. Listed in the link below are the letters sent from the two companies. I think their increase has to do with lead prices going up.

You could always save the brass and remanufacture the ammo yourself.
