Anthrocon features some of the most talented DJs in the Furry Fandom, but who are they really? We'll be taking some time in coming weeks to let you know, in their own words, what makes them tick and what you can expect from their sets.

This week we've got a DJ who's new to Anthrocon, but well known in the fandom, DJ Big Blue Fox!

Fandom Name: Big Blue Fox
Stage Name: DJ Big Blue Fox
Age: 33
Influences: Toni Peret, Jose Maria Castells, DJ Deep, Ben Liebrand
Genres: Trance
DJ Style: Club

Biography:

My first contact to the DJ scene happened back in 1984 when for the first time, I heard a megamix on the German radio station SWF3. It was Max Mix 4 by Toni Peret and Jose Maria Castells. The idea of putting multiple songs into one mix, adding lots of effects, making the singers stutter all the way and creating a new piece of music that way was completely new to me, and it instantly struck me. I got more information about DJing and started doing my own mixes with a tape recorder and two cheap turntables. In 1990, I got two SL1210 and a decent mixer, and started practising spinning Italodance and techno. I started recording my own mix tapes which actually has a halfway decent quality, and started DJing at friends' parties.

In 1996, during a visit to a German disco, I got to talk to the DJ and found out that he was in need of a light jockey. So I started doing this, and soon began DJing there as well for a while until the club went down the drain. In 1999, I made friends with DJs in another disco in Cologne, and history repeated: One night when a friend of me and me were visitting, our DJ friend asked us if we could step in as LJs since his LJ didn't show up. That was the night when the legendary A4 LJ dream team was created. My work in the Disco A4 ended in 2003, after massive dissagreements with the owner of the disco. Also in 1999, I made contacts with the illegal German mix scene that had formed around DJ Deep, a scene that illegally produced and sold DJ mixes in Europe. For a while, I took over one of the more popular mix series that were sold back then, and also produced a few other mixes using the name DJ Blaufuchs. My involvement with that scene ended back in 2001, a few weeks before the entire scene got busted by police, GEMA and IFPI. I guess I made a lucky choice there.

In 2002, I DJed at Eurofurence for the first time, with big success. Since EF was limited on function space, they only had one big dance every Saturday night, and from now on, I was the "resident DJ" doing that dance (with an exception of 2003, when I couldn't attend due to work issues and EF being too far away). In 2004, the Saturday Night dance was introduced to the largest German convention, MMC, with me being the DJ. In 2005, I got a spot at Further Confusion, and since then, I've been spinning there every year. 2008 marks the year I'm spinning at AC for the first time. I play pretty much anything that's requested, and any style I'm familiar with. My bandwidth starts with 1970's / 1980's pop and dance music, down to Eurodisco, cheezy party trash, and goes up to Techno, Trance and Acid. However, I prefer styles such as Trance or Techno, styles that can be mixed in a more challenging way.
