Indeed, foxes and wolves, there are lots of them. o_o I like both but I'm not sure why there are so many when there's the entire animal kingdom to choose from. I had a hard time picking myself, which is why my fursona is a...conglomeration.
There's so many of them because they are the two types of canines that people like, along with coyotes. You can't have people choose an animal that they don't like. It's their own personal choice. The fact that wolves, foxes, and coyotes are are widely chosen should tell you something. People like them.
Err, yes, obviously, I realize that. However, my question was why so many people choose them over the many other wonderful animals of our great planet Earth.

Actually, there are a lot of other nifty choices out there as well. Lots of cats and mice though too. I think it's the the animals we "know" versus the animals we don't attitude.
And well, in a group that treasures closeness and cuddling, what better avatars than cuddle-able and personable animals?
Of course, I've known bears and birds who were furries. I'd have to ask him the next time he gets online, but I believe Aloyen's character Obelisk was a bear. My husband used to play a giraffe. My own character is actually a "cabbit", a cat with rabbit-like legs, but she's also as small as a mouse (at least when she's wet...dry, she takes up at least three states and leaves hair everywhere).
If you go look at the fursuit parade pics on Flickr, you'll see all sorts.
As for the original question?
I think I prefer a kitsune with at least 7 tails. Or a beautiful white articfox.

have you notised that theres not alot of bird within the furry kingdom, the story i wrote has a harpy eagle in just to brake up the shadows but why dont peeps want to choose the feathered side?
There are a significant amount of avian[*1] folks within the fandom; while mammals do lead the way, there are a lot of folks who identify with birds. Overall, there's an Uncanny Valley effect going on: people identify and appreciate furries with human characteristics, and the closer to human, the more they identify, usually. So vertebrates over invertebrates, warm-blooded over cold-blooded, mammal over bird... until you hit primates, and then *wham!* it's too close to human, and the amount of people who really enjoy primate furries is few.
There are quite a few folks what like the scalies[*2], avians, one guy who seems to like cockroaches- but it is the general trend that mammals prevail. This is why 'furries' is the more popular term over the more accurate 'anthropomorphic animals'.. aside from being much easier to spell.

[*1] 'Avian' in common fandom use includes birds and griffins.
[*2] 'Scalies' in common fandom use includes reptiles, dragons, and dinosaurs.

i think i know what some on should protay as a vilan in furry stories... a fish called the snake heads (Channa sp) these fish are evil, worse than sharks and pharanas btw sorry if im going on a bit im in the fishkeeping circle as well (and the horticulture one but i wont go into details!)
It depends what I see. I usually call foxs "Kitsune" when they display Far Eastern/Anime style traits or a fox of Asian origin (such as the Hokkaido fox). Western foxes I just call, well, foxes.
"...and the Princess is a fox."
"I'm glad you find her so. Best wishes in your 'fox hunting'."
"Fox hunting? You like fox hunting, yes."
"Well, I don't get out much lately. But I used to go out almost every evening. One club or another."
"Really? That often? You must have collected several tails."
"Well, I admit I slept with a few. But I'm not like that anymore. Nowadays you can't be too careful. You don't know who they've been with."
Personally, I dislike it when someone says they are a kitsune with 5+ tails. My usual response is "Really? When would you care to share some of your wisdom oh great one?" Usually they don't understand what I'm talking about, and I sigh, and then I explain that a kitsune gains tails for doing certain things, like a act of great heroism or a particularly clever trick and that if they are claiming to have that many tails, then I'd like to hear about how they gained those tails since I am always looking for ways to better myself. There's a reason why I say I only have 3 tails. It's the defined limits of my personal wisdom.
::coughs:: I prefer kitsune, though. Watashiwa kitsunedesu.

my charater is a kitsune who was born with 3 tails and thats the way it stays, but what is intresting is that she has a black front, and face (where the white is i mean)
and white ears, socks and gloves (if you dont know the lower section of the arms and legs(sorry if it sounds rude))
Colors can change depending on the kitsune in question. To use myself as a example, I am a gray color( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/artiamus/ ) but then again I don't follow some of the more basic aspects.
I have two fox characters... One is a Red Fox because he's from the North America, so most of the exotic foxes are out, and his son is an arctic fox, cause he got freaky with a snow princess and she had more influence over their kit physically while his influence mentally is better. I like writing about them.
Can't say I ever really put a story behind any of my characters. The only one that I really put any story behind would be for my resistance story. But I have yet to do that story.

Neither.
Statistics indicate that 140% of all furries are foxes and I would like to see more variety, thus I am casting my vote for 'duck billed platypus'.
