Not me personally. While I know AC welcomes anyone of all ages and bloodline, I think its something to enjoy more with your friends rather then family. It would feel awkward of me to bring someone like my father along for instance. Thats just what I feel though. I know theres some furs out there that will disagree with me on this. |

I'll have my wife and daughter with me.. course my wife is an artist and has a table in the dealer's room and my daughter helps out where she can while I work security.

I already talked to him about it, he thinks its something for the younger generation and finds it somewhat strange but respects my decision. Not much of a surprise really as hes more interested in the outdoors; if he was gonna spend over $500, he would rather go to Alaska. I'm not gonna write a essay to beg him to go for something he probably wouldn't be interested in. My step mother on the other hand... oh boy. Lets just say if I was staying with her, you would never hear from me again.

1 the Momma Gryphon is coming this year? Cool! That's up there with you bringing your parents, at least in my books.

I tried inviting my mom and siblings but my mom gives me that vague sort of smile mothers usually reserved for when you buy them a toaster oven for Christmas instead of a dress or jewelry. My siblings look at me as though I'm inviting them to a flu-catching party.
My cousin might come if he can get the time off work, but he already has several other furry friends whom he's more likely to hang out with.

My parents are coming.
I'm even buying them memberships. (Of course, they're holding one of my savings bonds hostage until I do so

My Dad's coming this year (and working registration, no less!) My sister was present at Anthrocon 2003 for about two hours, while waiting for me to get free (we were caravanning from there to Tennessee for a family visit).
Mind, this is the ninth Anthrocon I've been in attendance at. I think most of us with family present will fall into two broad categories:
#1 Minors who are attending with their parent(s). For obvious reasons. Involved parents will take an interest in what their kids do, and might well want to chaperone them in this new activity. Entirely reasonable, and quite often, parents will enjoy the art and costuming (though usually duck out after a while to do other things in Pittsburgh).
#2 Long-time attendees who have been doing this wacky furry convention thing for a while. I include myself in this category. If furry and furry conventions are a significant part of your life, it's good to be able to say to your parents/siblings/etc "Oh, come check it out some year." It probably won't be much to their interest, of course; but it's sharing what you are interested in.
Anthrocon is for most of us a very social time, and to involve relatives in a 'friendly' social group can be somewhat awkward and off-putting, yes. But for minors it can be a necessity'; for those of us who are mellower about it, it's an integration of sides of our life that don't usually much intersect.

I've tried inviting my mom a few times. But she usually waves it off as another one of my silly little things I do, like Dungeons and Dragons, hot wing eating contests, or techno music. Maybe one day I'll get her to tag along, I think she'd actually have a really good time, she's a goof ball like me.

permalinkI'm in the same boat as Indy and Iron. My family just thinks furries are silly and my mother would probably rather clean the entire house five times over than go to a furry convention.

My dad's even worse. I haven't even tried to invite him along. It's not cause he isn't a nice guy, I just already know that if it isn't golf, NASCAR, beer, or a shotgun, he wants nothing to do with it.

I'm sure there are some furries into those, though. My one friend loves racing. But it sounds like your dad is a meat and potatoes type of guy. Still, you never can tell until you try.

My aunt has come once (and loved it) and my one brother has come a few times (also loved it). But they can't make it again this year; both are just too busy. My brother especially, as he's directing a camping trip that weekend.
My mom just wouldn't get it, and my father thinks it's stupid... yup, he's a big NASCAR fan too. ;P

permalinkMy mother came to AC 99 and 2000, mainly because King of Prussia's malls were nearby and she needed a vacation, but she did spend some time in the lobby during '99 and described to me what she saw.
