I was given an email that they had trouble charging to my credit card. The email stated that the room would be considered forfeited if payment was not received by may16...I was sent the email may 15th. I am not able to check my email every night. So just tonight i was able to check it ,and i find out my room is forfeited. I'm not sure what to do or what can be done? |

Did you think of calling the hotel to find out what's going on?
412-281-3700. Ask for Jaime Andrade.

Good Afternoon
Please note in finalizing the deposits that we posted to all Anthrocon reservations on April 25th, 2008, we have found that we are unable to receive final approval on the payment for your reservation. While at the time we were able to process a request for deposit on the credit card that you provided, when the request reached your credit card company it came back to us declined.
Please email me at today (Monday, May 19th) with a valid credit card number and I will try to help you and reinstate your reservation.
Sending sensitive information over a protocol which is most likely not encrypted is not a good idea. Only a small percentage, mostly businesses, activate encrypted mail services on servers. Some ISPs do, I know many who do not encrypt.
The westin needs to get some encrypted web form set up or ask the person call. Good security practices equals less identity theft and liability. Asking a person to transmit their CC# over a protocol which most likely won't be encrypted... there might be a level of liability there.

Remember folks, anyone asking for credit card info or SSN info over e-mail is a identity fraudsters. Period. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. Anyone sending that type of info over e-mail is either a fool, uneducated (simply don't know what they are doing), or deserves to be ripped offed.

Blanket statements like that are seldom accurate...

Oh, definitely.
The person who posted that signed up over a year ago, answered dozens of hotel-related questions, generated a fake e-mail address on westin's domain and then fooled giza into thinking she actually existed at the con solely for the purpose of eventually stealing the credit card number of a furry whose room was forfeited.
It's a brilliant scam, really.
It was really nice of Jaime to post here so promptly. While it may not be a good idea, don't call her a fraud artist.

That can be compermized at anytime. Especially if there are running an insecure system or unsafe security practices/policies.
I suggest the hotel liaison get in touch with the hotel and
a) Find out if the account was compermized or not.
b) if not, educate them about safe security practices over the internet.
Forgot about that tip in the last post. My bad.

The hotel liaison is a little busy right now.
