Does anyone have any experience with latex facial and hand appliances? How uncomfortable are they compared to fursuits? How hard are they to make and keep clean? Reusability? I'm fairly familiar with the process of making them, but I've never made any myself and I'm considering them as an option to making a fursuit, since I can wear normal clothes with them as opposed to hot fur. Anyone with experience and/or working knowledge who can help would be appreciated.

I'm pretty familiar. When applied with spirit gum, they aren't nearly as hot or itchy, but if you don't like anything touching your skin, or have sensitive skin, you will probobly be bothered by either. Appliances are, in my opinion, more comfortable to wear. If its' just mask latex, painted with latex paint, you just give them a quick hose-down to clean them(In the sink). Spraying them gently with some soap(NOT SCRUBBING AS THIS MAY REMOVE THE PAINT).

Although at the moment you would be hard-pressed for time to get them done in time for AC. My suggestions are ordering from NorthFur FX. Superjay(I think?) does some excellent appliance work.

This isn't for this AC. This is in general. This just is one of the more furre-friendly places to ask such things and not have people wonder what movie you're making/why you are into latex/if its a fetish and not have to explain what's on your mind.

I'm not sensitive to spirit gum and I have no problems with things on my face, so it sounds like a good deal all around. I need to get back into airbrushing so I can paint them properly.

My plan is for a full head series of appliances, hand appliances and tail. My concern is about durability regarding use and cleaning, as I'm not sure how much the actual materials will cost, and how often I can expect to have to remake them/create duplicates in case of wear and tear. If they can be hand washed gently in a sink and stored in a dry safe place, then I should have no issues.

For a kit to manufacture a full facial appliance, will run you about $150, although most of those are reusable. www.monstermakers.com is the best place for this stuff I've seen to date.
Also try teh Livejournal community "fursuit", they've got a ton of useful info.

Thanx. I think dragons look better without fur than all fuzzy, thus painted latex. You've been very helpful. And judging by your website, i think I actually know you. Of course I'm probably being extremely dense ATM. Either way, thanx.

Spirit gum comes off with sweat rather easily, so I use medical adhesive glue that you can get from Lyonshel. Called LarpX glue. You need a solvent to get it off, but it wont peel away as easily like Spirit gum.
I use a Lyonshel Mask when I LARP, and I dont find them to be too bothersome.I just wipe mine clean with babywipes afterwards and its all good.

they only have a couple things (like a lion sort of face) but check out screamteam.com I imagine during the off season, if you sculpted a face, the would cast it for you and make the appliance. They're foam latex...so there is a lo of make-up involved. Not sure if you want to get that into it. But they are very good. if they'll do the cast, it's well worth it. Foam Latex is a pain in the butt... You have to cook it (and you shouldn't do so in your regular oven) u ahve to watch the humidity, barometer, etc.
