Well, fudge!

I just talked to Chris at Steel City Diner. She was very apologetic, but despite everyone's best intentions, they simply don't have enough staff to stay open 24 hours for us this year. The Diner is already bringing in extra people from far and wide, but she couldn't get enough to cover the late-night hours. She extends her apologies to folks and hopes that they'll still come in and enjoy their wonderful fare. They're looking to be open from 7 AM to 10 PM, which is still going to put the staff through some serious overtime.

They are, however, looking forward to seeing Anthrocon's members again, and are once more going to have a special T-shirt made up just for their Furry customers.

(Of course, if anyone out there has a valid Pennsylvania food service license and is willing to work the Graveyard shift, let me know.)

Well I still think it was quite nice of them to make the attempt in the first place. And 10pm is pretty late, so the majority of folks should be able to enjoy their service.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about them taking a financial hit for being open overnight.

Doesn't your mother have a food service license for that sandwich shop she worked at? Smiling

And do YOU want to be the one to tell her she gets to work the midnight shift?

10 PM is late enough for me. I can't eat past that due to the horrors of GERD, unless I want to stay up all night, which I don't like to. Sticking out tongue

Do we know if they are going to be open Wednesday evening?

For us early arrivals (and setting up) - would be great to grab some Wolf_Snax(tm) from them.

P S- I still have my Steel City Diner mug from 2006, in mint condition (and used almost daily with good old British Tea!) - he wasn't kidding when he sold it me saying they are hard wearing!

(copying a post I made in another thread where I mention an nearby 24 hour restaurant )

I would recommend Primanti brothers ! They have 2 locations close to the convention center. On that is open 24 hours in the strip district not far from the convention center to the northeast.
and another by market square down by the point state park that is open late like 11pm or so. www.primantibrothers.com

theres also an Italian place thats very good http://www.montecellos.com/pittsburgh.html I have eaten many times at the Sewickley location up the river to the northwest of the downtown. So I assume the downtown location serves very good food as well.

The fact they tried to do a 24 hour shift is a big deal. Even the thought of giving workers overtime makes some businesses have a heart attack, and being a small buisness makes it even harder on them. This just shows the fact we really did pick the right city to have the con at. Every year I fall in love with Pittsburgh more and more. Three cheers for Furs-burgh.. I mean Pittsburgh! Yah, Pittsburgh, thats what i meant to say... hehehe! *blush*

*waves* And if you like puppeting, PA Pets Live is a good show to watch.

More on-topic: anybody know a good place to get nachos? I had tried to find the Mexican place on 5th and Liberty with no luck, and somebody at the hotel desk told me about some sports bar on Silliman but I couldn't find that either Sad

I do work in a restaurant, but I'm not about to work the graveyard shift on a precious trip away from work. YOU CANT MAKE ME!!!

Aside from what Rick2tails said, are there any other places open all night or at least til 3 in case anyone gets a craving for a late night munch?

Perhaps one of the locals can enlighten us further, but from what Googling I've done it appears that Primanti Brothers in the Strip District is the only nearby 24-hour restaurant (note that the Primanti Brothers in Market Square closes at 11 PM).

Perhaps the information from last year is no longer current.
However, the City Guide from AC'07 has a category on the last
page:
LATE NIGHT EATS

Cafe Milano
134 6th St
Sun-Thu 10am-1am
Fri-Sat 10am-2am

Pizza Parma
823 Penn Ave
Sun-Thu 10am-1am
Fri-Sat 10am-2am

Chinatown Inn
520 3rd Ave
Mon-Thu 11am-10pm
Fri 11am-3am
Sat 12Noon-3am
Sun 2pm-10pm

Vocelli Pizza
524 Penn Ave
Sun-Thu 11am-11pm
Fri-Sat 11am-1am

Giovanni's Pizza and Pasta
123 6th St
Mon-Thu 9am-1am
Fri 9am-2am
Sat 10am-2am
Sun 10am-1am

NONE of those are open 24 hours. However, open until 1am
really should be all you need. The vending machines in the
hotel, I expect, will have snack-food and beverages 24/7.

As for me, "open 7am-10pm" pretty much covers all my meals.
I'm not hunting down food in my sleep.

For those wondering, I saved the pdf myself.
However, the 07 City Guide
(along with the pocket reader that has the schedule,
and the Program Guide that has a description of all events)
is still downloadable right now (but not for long)
at
http://www.anthrocon.org/schedule

The 2008 versions will replace them.
(Of course, for the City Guide, that won't change very much.)

I only need them until 10 or so at night myself anyway--the only thing that would make me hungry or awake after that would be booze. And everyone knows there's nothing for drunk munchies like subs or pizza Sticking out tongue

I'm glad Steel City tried to stay open--I'm going to have to visit there just to hear what everyone is raving about.
