Update: With the schedule now finalized, I would like to set the Geek Meet for 5PM @ the Zoo (Edit: Allegheny Ballrooms II and III, 3rd floor of the Westin) after which we can grab a bite to eat wherever the general consensus is! I think this should be a good time because we'd be back in time for the Alexander Adams concert, which I personally want to attend, but let me know if this time sounds good/you'd like to go ^_^

Well since I don't know anyone and will be attending the con by myself, I'd like to maybe have a get-together where I could make some friends with similar interests Laughing out loud I'm frequently available to chat on AIM as well.

My Geek Qualifications:

- Video Games: I spend entirely too much time playing World of Warcraft, though lately I have been getting into Age of Conan as well. When I'm not caught up in MMO's I love other RPGs like the Final Fantasy series; I also like Halo, though I'm not very good at it, and Mario Kart (I only ever played the SNES/64 ones though ahah)... But Psychonauts is possibly my favorite game ever! I try and convince all video game fans I meet to play it if they haven't x)

- Anime: I haven't watched much lately but have seen and loved many series to include Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Kyo Kara Maoh!

- Books: My favorite author is Terry Pratchett and I never cease in my efforts to make every person a Discworld fan Laughing out loud I haven't read quite all the books yet but I'm working on it; just finished with the City Watch novels and felt a bit melancholy to be done reading them - I suppose I'll just have to look forward to re-reading them in a couple of years hehe. My other favorite authors include Mercedes Lackey and Brian Jacques.

- Miscellany: I used to be in choir and still love to sing in the shower, at my computer desk, or in my car (especially Queen! Loudly!), and I know most of the Disney movie songs by heart xD ... I LOVE Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel ... My favorite magazine is "Discover," even though I'm not that brainy when it comes to science myself, I love learning about interesting science STUFF; sometimes it makes me scratch my head and go "huh?" at the same time I'm going "wooooooaaaah!" ... And for boring miscellany, I don't drink, smoke, or "party" (since that usually involves the two previously mentioned) Sticking out tongue

Anyone else care to show their Geek credentials and maybe chat and/or meet up? ^_^ Preferably Thursday evening, before all the juicy con events Laughing out loud

Umm, one of your roomies here. I'm all for geeky stuff (when I get the time for it...I do have a 2 yr old). Is having been tech support for a local ISP, a fan of Dr. Who (and all its new spin offs), a fantasy writer (rejection letters true, but I have submitted), and an avid reader, geeky enough?

I also can't go to a convention without volunteering at the very least. You might really have fun working with Simbalion (he's awesome too) on the AV staff. And there is ALWAYS a need for volunteers.

I do like your book lists BTW, though it's been far too long since I read ML's stuff. And I confess to never reading Tamora Pierce. Though I really liked Meredith Ann Pierce.

And yeah, Buffy was a great show, though I never got to see the whole series. Of course, I was also a Highlander and Forever Knight fan too. If you want to talk about geeky (or is that dweeby Geek )

My geek qualifications?

Well, not a lot of the usual stuff for furs, i;m afraid; i don't like video games, i know very little about computers, i hardly ever rpg or larp, and my knowlege of programming is limited to some raw html and database management. But i have my fair share of geekiness.

--I, too, read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy, mostly fantasy. I'm not much for mercedes lackey anymore, but i still adore pratchett, and i read a fair amount of neil gaiman, tamora pierce, jim butcher, naomi novik, diana gabaldon...

--In addition to the sci-fi fantasy stuff, i also read a lot of stuff about cognitive science, and history, and psychology, and semiotics, and biology, and even a little physics. Not for classes; i'm just really inquisitive. I find i can keep up with more than one book at a time only if one is nonfiction and the other fiction.

--I watch a lot of sci-fi fantasy shows. Well, i do when i can get my claws on them, anyway; i don't have cable, so i get most stuff through the public library. I just finished catching up on my torchwood.

--I volunteer at AC. A lot. And then i just conveniently "forget" to turn in my hours sheet...or fill one out...or pick one up... Honestly, i just can't think how i manage to keep forgetting. Presumed innocent

I haven't read any Mercedes Lackey recently but Valdemar was one of my favorite series and I reread them from time to time. x) That's funny though, Tamora Pierce is who I kinda started with as far as fantasy books, then when I got older I found Lackey and saw a lot of similarities, except I felt ML was more "adult" fantasy compared to "young adult."

I don't watch much TV but I forgot to mention I'm a huge Buffy/Angel fan - if you haven't watched those I highly recommend it. A lot of people scoff at Buffy just because of the name but it's a great show Smiling I got the box sets for both recently and just finished watching it again and I'm on the last season of Angel ^_^

:nods: Much of Pierce's work is young adult and teen stuff; i read some of her early work as a child, before i knew about the later work, then came back to the rest in the last few years. Lackey i did read for a long time, most especially in middle and high school, but i stopped when i started feeling like the angst had taken on a stock quality that didn't appeal to me. Also, Lackey has a tendency towards villains with no redeemable features that i see less in some other authors. YMMV, of course; that was just my impression.

Buffy and angel, are, to my mind, modern-day classics of fantasy , with writers who were masters of the one-liner and committed to really good storytelling. I never got to see season 7, since i only discovered the series after it hit syndication, but i'm sure i'll get to it someday. It's one of those series i come back to again and again. I recently indulged myself in a copy of season 3, to celebrate a nice fat tax refund.

Har-har! Yes, we're all geeks of furrydom but not all furries are also geeky about other things generally associated with geekiness. x)

Sadly, since they started letting anyone into the fandom, we've been inundated with a flood of people who have as much geek in them as Britney Spears, and about as much class. While we used to all be fairly geeky, and that was cool (for us), there are a lot more fanbois, emo freaks, and lulz wannabees coming to the convention, so this kinda meet makes a lot of sense.

BTW, my claims to geekdom:

Currently getting a Bachelors in Game and Simulation Programming.
Bachelors in Computer Science (Network Infrastructure)
Star Trek (original, TNG, all 10 movies (woot!), DS9, Voyager, Enterprise) fan
SG-1 Fan
Registered for SGW (Stargate Worlds for you less geek than I people) beta and rabidly waiting for the beta to start
Babylon-5 PSYCHOfan (Bester is psychic superhotness)
I've either played, or own, or both, every RPG published for the last 20 years
I have both a PSP and a DS
and probably few more geeky things that would just blow your minds, so I won't cause you untimely deaths by telling you about them.

Not to be nit picky or waspish or anything, but purely out of curiosity...what does you being a dragon have to do with anyone worshiping you? Is this something peculiar to your species of dragon that i don't know about?

Dragon egos are renown for both their insurmountable superiority complexes (which cannot be dented regardless of the amount of evidence presented to the contrary) as well as their unending capacity to be flattered and or complimented into pseudo-submission (see point 1 as to why they will never actually submit). Being worshiped accomplishes both aspects at once and makes a Dragon much easier to be dealt with. Just a little thing, you know.

I recognize that what you've said is a big part of how you self-identify. I respect that. But with the deepest of respect, in my experience, indomitable superiority complexes and abiding vanity isn't a dragon thing; it's just you.

My first experience of furry was back in the mid 90's when i belonged to a newsgroup called alt.fan.dragons. The population was large and, unsurprisingly, about 3/4 folks who self-identified as dragons or who RPed dragons. After that, i became briefly involved in a MUCK that had been created by folks from that newsgroup, and was also populated almost exclusively with dragons and folks RPing dragons. Aroung the same time, i also recall attending an informal discussion at anthrocon geared to dragons and herps. I remember very few cases in any of those venues of the kinds of egos you describe; most folks i met were sweet, friendly people, no more arrogant or vain than the rest of the furry population.

Heck, most of the dragons i know here don't seem to fit the model you describe. I would say that i don't, but i think it's difficult to be really sure, when i say i'm not vain or arrogant, that i'm not just flattering myself. Certainly i don't fit the classic physical model of a dragon--i may have four limbs plus wings and tail, but i'm the size of a house cat and i don't breathe anything dangerous.

Personally, if i had to note traits that i think a lot of dragons i know embody, it would be an intellectual bent that can slide towards pedantry and some reluctance to accept others' authority. Among the faerie varieties, i've also seen a mischievous trend. but of course none of that is ever always, and i would never presume to tell someone they're not a dragon if they feel they are.

Also, like others in this thread, i do feel really uncomfortable when others talk about who does or does not have a right to be a part of furry or geekdom--for their sake, because i know how much it hurts to be excluded and denigrated like that, and for our sake, because i feel quite clear that every member of furry has their own gifts to bring and i don't want to miss out on any of them if i can help it. Furry isn't just for people who meet a certain standard of acceptable geekitude or fandom. It's for anyone with an interest in creatures with animal and human characteristics, be they fursuiters, RPG players, artists, cartoon enthusiasts, transspecies folk...

Of course i would never tell you what to think about other furs. Those are your thoughts and feelings, and you have every right to them. But if you could on this message board, i'd really appreciate it if you could not speak so disparagingly of furs with a more mainstream mindset and if you could try not to make such sweeping generalizations of the dragon population.

And people wonder why I don't take them seriously. It's primarily because they insist on taking me seriously. While I love flattery, and I love being listened to (the sound of my voice is delightful, don't you think? I could listen to my voice for hours...), but people who dissect the things I say like a surgeon looking for a malignant tumor tend to annoy me. Take it at face value, accept it, discard it, or contemplate it, but do not analyze it. It's just there for the moment. Try to just enjoy the conversation and don't think about it too much. I pursued these threads separately for a reason.

Sadly, since they started letting anyone into the fandom, we've been inundated with a flood of people who have as much geek in them as Britney Spears, and about as much class.

I can't help but be a little offended by that statement--some of my closest friends in the fandom are people who are not geeks. And what about all of the artists, animators, and fursuiters?

Also, who is any of us to say who should (and should not) be "allowed" into the furry fandom? I don't believe that is our call to make.

I agree; it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be indignant about the makeup of people in the furry fandom, it's so diverse. Really, any fandom will have it's spectrum of fans. Take World of Warcraft for example; a lot of the people I've met in that game think it's insulting to be called a geek for playing it, because it may be the only "geek-worthy" thing that they do and thus don't define themselves by it. Furries are the same.

Me on the other hand, well, I've made it pretty clear that I am a geek through and through eheh - but I don't want this to be an "elitist geek" meet x) It's fine to jokingly say "hail me as your Geek God!" but it's another story to actually judge people by their level of geekiness ahah, talk about hypocrisy...

And people tell me I need to get over myself...

If you know exceptions that prove the rule, allow me to point you in the direction of the LULZ who are the rule. If you can find an ounce of class, dignity, or socially-redeeming quality there, I'll stand corrected. Or provide me proof that there are more classy, dignified and socially-redeeming non-geek furres than LULZ and I will also stand corrected.

Until then, we'll discuss your friends as exceptions to the general rule regarding non-geek furres and not the mainstream.

Furry artists, animators and fursuiters are probably the biggest geeks in the fandom. They don't count as non-geeks.

LULZ are the fauxfurs who infiltrate the fandom so they can find things to post and rip on for places like Encyclopedia Dramatica and Something Awful. They're the Furzis (Furry Nazis) who despise normal furries because we're "all gay". And I'm sure even Giza remembers (or can find a staffer who does) the Habbo-wig wearing protesters from last year who were outside the Con in the rain, marching around in a swastika formation. I will drop names of some of the offenders I know about from personal experience, if you like.

I think it's sweet that people want to forget that bad things exist and that the fandom can come together and just have fun, but for every person that wants to have fun, there is at least one person out there who wants to ruin their good time. Usually just because they can. I've been trained to handle network security. Trust me when I tell you that isn't an exaggeration or an overestimation. I really wish it were.

Thus my fursona. So if you don't press me on this further, I won't continue to be a little rain cloud. I really would, honestly, just like to have a good time. I look forward to AC each year as a way to relax and see my friends. I game, I chat, I yiff a little, and it's about the only vacation I ever get. That's why I always go as a Supersponsor. I like to show my support for this great organization and its members.

I also like to watch and study non-human animal conflict which is found in nature.

I don't think black flags and Furzi have any relation. If I get some, I'll make a little furzi armband for my fursuit.

I don't like to ask random people at a convention to go to a political meet, there is always just too much stupid which enters the room. Asking random people to go to a political meet is like inviting a Catholic father to a newscast on wether its right to stage a drunk driving death hoax... http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/index.php?cl=8260106 Oh wait, stupidity rears its face. i.e. He said something along the lines of, "this year is the worst for binge drinking" Even though its not and the woman makes a comment like, "Umm, no... the statistics I read say 78 was the worst year."

I've tried to invite random people in conversation before, usually with guns. Generally the first moronic comment to come out of someone's mouth is, "People who have guns have a small penis." Then usually everyone is like, "Okkaaayyy... retard! *then they all edge away from the moron."

Which is why you won't catch me inviting random people to any type of politic meet unless they show intelligence in the first place. I do converse with people politically, and the people I know how to keep the conversation at a decent level without becoming condescending. Note, unless there are serbs or bulgarians, then its perfectly okay to call each other names. Smiling Hell, I even have clients which love to converse with me even though they may have opinions which lean towards liberal when it comes to guns, even though they're not liberal, they know how to properly converse and debate the merits. We do learn lots from each other, I mainly learn about history of politics and how politicians acted before there was the internet and such since news/correct quotation didn't spread like it does now.

I would wager that the majority or artists and dealers are not geeks, nor do they constitute this "LULZ" that you speak of.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for calling someone out if they are out of order or otherwise being anti-social. What I do have an issue with is the attitude of, "People who aren't/are into X, Y, or Z aren't welcome here".

In fact, Anthrocon's predecessor, Confurence East actually came into being because the furries who attended it were in turn excluded from a certain science fiction convention that decided, "Oh, we decided we don't want furries here". Furry Connection North was recently started for similar reasons, as was Midwest Furfest.

I believe that excluding an entire class of people due to a few miscreants is a big mistake. It only serves to alienate responsible and talented individuals who may otherwise make valuable contributions to the community at large.
