Greetings all!

At FC this past year and AC last year, I've seen some critters run around with instruments of various sorts.

Especially with the Jungle Out There theme, would anyone be interested in a drumcircle/ open jam?

Most I've been to often include people dancing, singing, and just relaxing while listening.

I would be willing to to get things rolling, and have some extra percussion (shakers, a couple drums, tambourines, cowbells, etc.) I can bring. Have already run it through the official route via the programming form, but just wanted to see--informally--if there was any interest.

Even if nothing officially arises, perhaps whoever is around with instrus can have an informal jam at the Con at some point.
No matter what, I'll still bring my djembe and doumbek.
Will be there Thursday evening (got to catch the Celtic music!) through Sunday.

Cheers!

Now there's an instrument that will be easy to pack. I'm bringing my flute along. Hope I get a chance to use it, but if not, no big deal, it uses up very little space. It's also a fairly quiet instrument on the lower notes.

Awesome! I hope you still plan on bringing your flute. The more instruments, the better.

PS. I like your icon's quote. Something I try to live by.

Peace

Yes, I am still planning on bringing the flute provided I can fit it into my luggage, which I'll be packing tonight. Has a meeting place and time(s) been established, or are we going to be winging it spontaneously? I know for myself I have some free time Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon, but after that, I'm booked virtually back to back with panels & activities for the rest of the weekend... gonna be busier than I thought.

Thanks, I borrowed that classic quote from Batman Begins.

I'll have my djembe at the con. Doubt the udu would be any good without amplification.

Sweet! Sounds like there's enough interest in general for me to bring my normal slew of percussion to share.
I'd love it if you still brought the udu. I keep thinking about obtaining one as they seem like they're fascinating to play. Perhaps I'd get a chance to try one out at AC...?

I'll try to swing by--I can sing halfway decently, and if someone has a keyboard I can maybe bring some pretty music for you to try out. But I don't do well on "jams" on the keyboard XD I'm not THAT talented.

But I'd love to hear it--I'm into stuff like that...

Much like GreyFoxFanatic the only instrument I could bring to the jam would be my voice. But on the bright side I'm an actual paid vocalist, and while I usually sing classical I have a monstrous vocal range. So odds are I could easily freestyle some scat or a vocal roll or even some scales that would sound cool to the right groove.

To GreyFox and IronWolf, vocals would kick arse! I love scat, and an open jam/drumcircle is perfect place to try out one's chops on any instrument (including vocals). I hope to see you both there!

Cheers!

I'd be interested to watch and dance to it if you manage to play this. Eye-wink

(Okay, seriously, I'm sure a few people were thinking of this before, I'm just the first one to say it out loud. Sticking out tongue)

Yesh, dancing is MUCH encouraged!

I was debating between bringing my small djembe or my mandolin, and I'm thinking djembe would be the way to go. (I'm not very good at mandolin yet.)

Well, Tansunn, bring both! I don't have any instruments, but I'll play whatever anyone puts in front of me...and dance and sing no matter who I'm infront of. I can't wait.

Well, if I had the capacity to bring both, I'd have the capacity to bring my electric guitar and amp, which I don't, even though it's my preferred instrument. Since my djembe is my smallest instrument, it's the one I'll be bringing.

Hi there,

I'm glad for your's and other's enthusiastic responses. I'll make sure to have several drums and smaller instruments available for sharing so that people can try out what they would like.

Ya, bring both if you so desire.
I have a bouzouki I could bring (sometimes called a bass mandolin). And I'm also not very good at it at the moment. Mainly basic major and minor chord chops and a little (very little) melody work. How is your mando tuned, GDAE?

I've got a few drums, besides all the little percussion, for people to share, so hopefully with a few of us bringing extra instru's there will be a-plenty.

Cheers!

I was just saying how bummed I am that there isn't a slotted jam session and was debating not going because of that. The music is one reason I love cons and drive hours to go. If I do make it, I'll have my bodhran with me. Slainte!

There wasn't a slotted Jam session this year because we didn't get a volunteer or panelist to head it. That doesn't mean that one can't be set up in am impromptu fashion, but in order for something to get put on the schedule "officially", I kind of need someone to come to me and tell me they are willing to do it in advance.

Yeah, I apologize for that. The idea only hit me ~1 month ago, and I tried putting it in via the official event/forum form. I knew it was getting down to the wire, but figured I'd give it a go anyway.

Perhaps if the impromptu session goes well, we'll know there is enough interest to plan ahead for next year.

Do you know if the hotel has a courtyard or some other outdoor area (preferrably with shade) that might work well for ~20 people with instruments?
..I've been to too many cons, work trainings, and other traveling; I can't quite remember the complete layout of the hotel/conference area.

Thanks for your help,

MAH (Miss Kitty)

Greetings,

Ooooh, bodhran. I have one, too. Know any celtic leads out there?
Or perhaps Graham Alexandar can stop by with his fiddle...

Hey everybody,

I'm in Room 616 with some friends at the OMNI. I have my dumbek and djembe and some smaller percussion to share. Feel free to contact me there.
Anybody got ideas of when to jam? I'm thinking maybe we could--since at least the first time there won't be a whole lot us--outside the ballroom in that large hall.

Between 5 & 7pm on Friday there's not much going on in the Ballroom area. If anyone sees this post, come on over to the corridor by the ballroom about 5:30 if you wish. I'll be there; bring friends & instruments!

Cheers!

Well, I was there. Um. Alone. Jammed out anyway. Got some nifty interpretive dancing out of the nearby furs. You's missed out. It should happen again sometime.

Aww, shoot.
We must have simply missed each other. I went up shortly after Kage's story hour.
Wasn't too far from the Astrofurs with a couple others.

Unfortunately it seems to rainy for the roof tonight. I'll see if I see any instruments floating around after 2's Rant.

S'ok. Had a blast. Actually caught the tail end of a jam out toward the waterfront and jammed with another djembe player who was a load of fun.

Heeeeey. I'm eastern PA, too. Maybe there's some jamming to be had around here, eh?
