rar...
is that just general good practice or has something happened? I'm guessing the former.

It's because I don't want a single person to come up to me at the con and say, "The hotel messed up my reservation!" I will have absolutely zero sympathy if the person did not reconfirm his reservation.

permalinkThe general rule of thumb that I've seen so far is to call and reconfirm about two months beforehand, then again a week beforehand.
I was a bit late doing it, but I confirmed my reservation about two weeks ago. And I'll do it again in another few weeks right before AC.

Aye aye captain!
hmm... I wonder what happened to those who got their reservations screwed over at the con and had no hotel room.

I've been doing this a long, long time. Hotels rarely if ever "lose" reservations, and the last thing they want to do is "screw over" a paying customer. More than 99% of the cases that I have seen fall into one of three categories:
1) Data entry error on the part of the reservation clerk. They are human, too, and with the number of reservations they enter in a given day, it is inevitable that they will make a mistake. A tired clerk may type "Togers" when he means "Rogers," and of course when Mr. and Mrs. Rogers show up at the hotel, there is no reservation for them while the hotel is left wondering where the heck Mr. Togers is.
2) Miscommunication. Mr. Samuels makes a reservation, but the clerk hears "Daniels" and enters the name that way. This tends to happen with people who have pronounced accents of one kind or another.
3) Date error. I've had people come crying to me that the hotel "lost" their reservation, only to find out that they made the reservation for the week before or the week after the con.
Re-confirming your reservation and, for God's sake, WRITING DOWN YOUR CONFIRMATION NUMBER AND BRINGING IT WITH YOU will avoid almost every potential reservation problem.
A final note: I cannot help with hotel issues, neither can any Anthrocon staffer. They have to be taken up with the hotel itself. Jaime is a miracle-worker; you'll get much farther with her than you will with anyone else!

permalinkYes, and niceness! Utmost politeness, respect, and gratitude will have people bending over backwards to help you. If there's a problem that can't get resolved, being nasty will NOT help.

Happens even in the simplest of circumstances. My wife and I were taking a trip where we were to meet and stay with another couple. They booked the room, in her name. We arrived first, asked for room in the name of 'Michaela S. Weeks.' No joy. No joy on any of her nicknames. No one with last name 'Weeks'. No one with first name 'Michaela.' No joy on her husband's name, which is significantly harder to spell. Wait around a few hours, other couple shows up. No, they have no room for her. Fortunately she had her confirmation number, and with that we could clear up the mystery: They had a room reserved for 'M. Sweeks.'
Shit happens. Confirm your reservation.

permalinkThose who are flying to the con may want to check up on their flight reservations as well.
I know one person who paid in advance for AC registration and his flight, only to find out as he tried to retrieve his boarding pass at the airport that he booked for the previous weekend by mistake. All that money was flushed down the toilet. He had to turn around and spend his weekend at home. Ouch!

A very, very sad lesson to learn. Indeed, double-check your flight reservations as well. It is best to request a confirmation email from the hotel and to print out the flight confirmation well ahead of time.
And don't forget to check that pesky AM/PM thing. I came very close to arriving at 6 PM for a 6 AM flight, but luckily I am in the habit of checking and re-checking my reservations, and caught it in time.

This is a stupid question that I should know the answer to, but how do I confirm my reservation? o.O
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkCall the hotel involved, give them your reservation number (by preference) and ask them to verify that their records have you arriving and departing on the appropriate dates. If you don't have the reservation number, have them check by name. If they do find it by name, make sure you get the reservation number before you hang up and bring it with you to the con.
There's no such thing as a stupid question. There can be stupid answers, though.

permalinkYou're asking NOW so it's a SMART question.
Here's the steps.
1) Write down all your information- confirmation#, dates, and so on.
2) go to the hotel's website, and follow the prompts to use your
confirmation# to check.
OR
3) Phone the hotel's main phone# with all that information in hand,
and say you'd like to confirm your reservation.
Be ready to give them the confirmation#.
Online, obviously, should be faster. You can do that across the final
month whenever you feel like it.
If you phone, try not to KEEP phoning once you've confirmed it once.
Accidents are rare, but once you've phoned once, it's better to just
recheck online if you really must, and only phone if there's a problem
with the online status of your reservation.

Uh oh! Hey guys? You can't get to the Westin's page from the AC webpage to check reservations anymore, since they're full up. So, I kindly provides a link:
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1370
And since I'm nice, here's one to the Omni, too.
http://www.omnihotels.com/findahotel/PittsburghWilliamPenn.aspx
That should save a lot of google hits from people who're doing this online!
Anyway, to the people who're chatting about the mispelled names, and things like that? That's exactly why I use online registration. I can do it at my leisure, in my underoos if I want, take my time, and double, triple, and quadruple check the information that's been put in. The last thing I want is to be stranded in an unfamiliar city, during a furry convention, trying to snag room space- and my boyfriend certainly has had that happen once or twice in all the cons he's been to. It does NOT sound fun. Additionally, when I get the confirmation information online, I can save the page to my hard drive, as well as making a print-out. And there's no potential for me to mis-hear my confirmation number that way, either.

Good thing I looked here on the forums.
We called tonight to check on our reservations for the hotel. Too bad we didn't do this yesterday
Anywho, me and Koinu-kun have already crossposted a bunch of posts regarding our snafu. We called the Westin tonight to verify, and they only have us down for 1 room, when we have a confirmation for 3 rooms for 3 nights. We have been told now that we will have to wait till Monday to call to talk to the people that handle this, and we suspect, it's just an error on the part of a clerk, but that is to be determined. My friend who's card we are using for the rooms, made the reservations online-back in December, and he hast he confirmation Email in his account. We called, and told them the info, and they stated the information that we only have 1 room reserved. Bleh. We were counting on the rooms because we have atleast 7 people that will be in our 'block', so yeah, major snafu here.
While reading this thread, I noted that someone said to talk to 'Jamie' to work out resolutions to this error, as well, my friend Koinu-Kun is a fursuiter, and if we can not get a 'normal' room for the extras, if we can try to still get a Fursuiter room for his group.
If anyone can help between now and Monday to help put our frazzled nerves at ease, it would be grately appreciated.

permalinkDid you ever find the credit card statement that had the billing for the first night's stay for the three rooms?

We found the credit card statement, yes, but it was only listed with one charge for one night though. We do not know how much this will affect things. Tomorrow, Monday, I'll be calling to talk to this Jamie person, as she seems to be the liaison for difficulties concerning room issues.

The credit card statement should have been the first clue.
If you have a confirmation email from the Westin that says you have three rooms, then you need only forward that email to Jaime at jaime.andrade(at)westin.com. She'll be in on Monday.

Yeah, that is what we were thinking as well. I've been reading the forums, double checking and first thing tomorrow (Monday) morning at 9am I will be calling the hotel to talk to Jamie in regards to this. If worse comes to worse, we'll try to figure something out.
