Recommended Dining?

Well, I'm not used to Pittsburgh, to say the least. Last time I was at AC, it was still in ol' Philly, and I knew the area and the great places to dine good (and with trust) for cheap. So. Since I know zip about the Pitts, what places can you recommend to me? Where can I eat where I won't get food poisoning? I ask this because food poisoning and the illness that follows can (and likely will) get me a straight trip to a hospital bed for two weeks (at least) due to some of my medical conditions. And well... I don't think my three friends can afford to find a place to stay down there for that long. And we all know that some places just have a reputation for it (For those who went to Philly, remember that one Chinese restaurant back in 05? Ugh... thank the gods I was warned early; I just wish all those other furs were). Lower priced places (entrees under $15) are always loved. I'd just rather not dine on pizza for the entire convention... that would murder my digestive tract EDIT: Also, lists of places NOT to eat are appreciated. |

We will have a list of recommended restaurants included in your convention bag, which will have a solid amount of fine places to dine.
My personal recommendations for budget dining include the Steel City Diner (close), Gene's Last Chance (excellent wings) and the Spaghetti Warehouse (Pitcher of Sangria!)

And thank you.

I don't drink it all myself, mind. I've gone there with others, bought it for the table, and shared... mind, I fill my glass to the tippy-top before sharing, because it's gooood.
http://meatballs.com if you're curious about the place.

You share the same pitcher? That's unsanitary.
And what does it mean to "fill my glass"?

Well, Kage, some of us have stopped drinking straight from the bottle, deciding instead that wine can be enjoyed a glassful at a time.
And.. and.. no, I can't make the joke I'm about to make about 'sharing the same pitcher'. Not until I've actually had a few Sangrias.

I need to find someone to help me drink it. I was like SWEET, then realized that two of our friends that are going to be with us are straightedge, and, as good at drinking-without-getting-drunk as my fiancee and I are, we would be murdered by a full pitcher of Sangria.

The Spaghetti Warehouse does offer other spirits besides pitchers of Sangria.
Though for the three times I've eaten there, I've gotten that, so I can't vouch for anything beyond the Sangria.

I would think that you are not likely to get food poisoning at any establishment in Pittsburgh. The City Health Inspector would be rather quick to shut a place down that featured such delicacies on their menu.

Some places slip through, unfortunately. In fact, we have an Outback out here that has been giving regular food poisoning cases for the last 10 years :/ They don't take proper care of their seafood.

I've heard a lot about it. Are prices good?

Yes. Last time I was there, I got a burger, fries, and a HUGE salad for less than $10. It was quite a deal. In fact, I think I'll just order the salad next time. It alone was enough to fill me up.
They also like us. Alot. Last year they made up their own Anthrocon t-shirts and sold them to the attendees.

Eh, I don't mean this in a bad way, but when you have a huge opportunity like AC, and your a restaurant owner, its in your best interest to like them XD I can't even FATHOM the amount of money that goes in to Pittsburgh every convention. But I am happy to hear of any furry-friendly organization, no matter whether they know we're profit, or they really, truly like having us around.
Gods, can you imagine the tips for the waiters/waitresses in that one weekend alone?

For Anthrocon 2006, the figure given to us from the Convention and Visitor's Bureau was about $3 Million dollars. (2007 figures are pending.)
What I was trying to get at is that the Steel City Diner went above and beyond what we would have expected from a local business. Clearly, they see us as far more than just another revenue stream.

Well, I hope they have a large selection on their menu, as I think I will be eating there quite often.

permalinkWe've been talking about this in the First Timer forum lately.
Here's my quick answer.
If you walk out of the Westin lobby, cross the street to the Kwik-E-Mart, turn left, walk to the traffic light, turn the corner to the right and keep walking, within about a block, you will reach three places almost in a row:
-the Golden Palace is a Chinese buffet
-Fernando's Cafe is the sandwich shop with the AnthroCon special. If you don't know the story about Fernando last year, speak up. (It's been posted a few times.)
-the Steel City Diner will be open early and late for us, possibly 7am-11pm.
Under the Westin are a few places to get very light breakfast stuff.

Oh, I heard about Fernando last year, and its my personal goal to give him a hug.
I'll stay away from the Golden Palace unless it is REALLY good. But around here, almost all Chinese buffets are food poisoning central. Thank you!

permalinkLast year,
Wednesday night, I ate at the Golden Palace.
I didn't have any problems with food poisoning then or at any point during the convention.
Still, you can eat or not-eat wherever you want.

Mmkay. I might check that out, then, but like I said... dead terrified of Chinese buffets.

I never met a Chinese eatery I didn't like. Bring on the Lo Mein, the General Tso’s Chicken, and Peking Duck. And don't forgot, it was the Chinese that brought us the noodles, pasta, Paper money, toilet paper, ink, and most importantly, paper. The arts would be very limited without ink and paper.

permalinkLet's also not forget about Beef & Broccoli. Anytime I head to a Chinese restaurant, I've always ordered that. So far, only two places I've been to that serve it just right. Everyone else is just dry.
I'll have to give that place a shot when I get there.

I'm a first time con-goer, but I'm familiar with Pittsburgh. I agree with the downtown recommendations listed above. I don't know if you'll have a car, but wether you do or not, I reccomend taking the bus from Wood St. and Fifth Downtown (the PAT 51C, which comes every 15 min./ half hour) to the South Side. TONS of bars and restraunts, cheap and reliable. I plan on trying to get a few trips over there going with some out of towners for eating and/or barhopping or whatever. They're are lots of diverse people that live and hang in the South Side, so it'd be awsome if we could rock it out in some furry gear!
