The Westin is completely booked up on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, which means if you are arriving on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, you will likely not be able to check in before 3 PM. You can always leave your bags at the bellman's desk and take a tour of the beautiful city of Pittsburgh. Also, Anthrocon's famous "Zoo" does not open until Thursday and another group will be in that ballroom on Wednesday evening. If you want to hang out somewhere, though, Jaime is letting us gather in the Westmoreland Room on the 2nd floor. Please do not linger in the lobby! It gets very crowded very quickly and the Fire Marshall gets his bloomers in a twist over it.

I have a reservation for Wednesday, so that means my room will not be available (cannot check in) until 3pm that day, if I'm understanding that right, correct?

Thats correct, check-in time at the Westin is 3PM, as it is at the majority of hotels, now that being said you can call em up an request an "Early Check-In Time" but whether or not they will be able to accomadate that request depends on how quick their cleaning staff works.

Of course, in this PARTICULAR case, Uncle Kage's saying that there's no point
requesting Early Check-In Tuesday or Wednesday, since they can't turn over the
rooms fast enough. So either day, plan to check in no sooner than 3pm. Later than
3pm, like, say, the evening, is fine.

There is always a tiny possibility, depending on the alignment of the planets, that a room happens to become available right at the moment you walk up to the front desk. I am saying not to bank on it, though.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep that in mind, although I do think we'll be there about eveningish on Wednesday.

Am I to understand that the Westmoreland Room on the 2nd floor will be open all night Wednesday and into Thursday morning? I ask only because I am arriving on Wednesday and won't be able to check into my room until Thursday afternoon. Also, will I be able to leave my bag at the bellman's desk during this time?

I'm NOT official anything, but I've paid attention to all the official spokespersons.
Kage's said before not to nap in the hallways, Fursuit Lounges, etc. The hotel frowns
on that, and will cause trouble for the con. If you're going to sleep in the hotel,
the hotel requires you do it in a room designated for that. ("Get a room.")

My understanding is that, no matter how late any event at the con goes, sooner or
later it will end, and you should go sleep at least a few hours.
(In a room designated for sleeping.) If there's a 24-hour EVENT, that's news to me.
Some events start early, some run late, some do both.

=========
How I understood Uncle Kage's announcement:
"We are unable to open the OFFICIAL Zoo until Thursday. However, Jaime has
thoughtfully allowed a temporary Zoo to be set up in the Westmoreland Room
Wednesday, so that congoers don't congregate in the lobby and other places."

That means, like the Zoo, sleeping is out, and sooner or later, you will need to
go off and sleep.

As for checking your bags, if your room isn't available for the next few hours,
they can arrange to hold your luggage until then. My understanding of hotels
is that they won't hold your luggage overnight-you should be in your room by then.
(Don't have a room reserved for that night? Then you're not a guest yet, and
neither you nor your luggage should even be there.) Therefore, you either reserve
a room there or elsewhere Wednesday night, or adjust your travel plans to arrive
Thursday when you HAVE a room reserved. That's part of your travel plans.

Then again, you might want to post the second question in the HOTEL forum
(on its own thread) or ask Jaime directly- I can easily be wrong on that, and am not
an official ANYTHING. That was my common-sense reading of how hotels do business
and how similar questions have been answered.

You can also wait until staff answers your original question, since I COULD be wrong.
(I would bet money I'm not, however.)

What BlackJack said.

No, Westmoreland will not be open all night since it has to be made ready for programming. We do not know when it will close as of yet; it is intended only to give early-arriving people a place to congregate before they go to bed.

And no, you cannot sleep there.

Thanks for the info. It wasn't my intention to sleep there by any means. More of a place to occupy time until scrambling off elsewhere for the night. As for adjusting my travel plans, that's out as my flight was available for a Wednesday booking for availability for the optimum price at the time of my purchasing some time ago. My most important concern was stowing my bags for the duration without lugging them around until 3pm the following afternoon.

Cheers.
