permalinkI have a very taugh trip.
I'm actually going to work on Tuesday, leaving at 16:30, rushing my way through Heathrow, getting on a plane, flying to New York, taking a coach to NYC, taking a bus to Pittsburgh, and dragging myself towards the Westin at 12:00 Wednesday.
I'm hoping to wake up by Friday evening.

Do yourself a favor: Don't eat for the whole day (at least 16 hours) before you go. Sleep on the plane over. Your body has two internal clocks that govern "jet lag". By waking around the point of landing, you'll see the sun come up, and your body will think it's in the right timezone. By not eating, you'll reset 'breakfast' to the first time you eat after landing, again, quickly resetting your internal clocks to local time.
On the way back, do the same thing. You'll reset to GMT faster. It will only take a day or so to reset yourself this way, as opposed to a week by using a sleep only method (or worse, no method at all).
Anyway, having traveled a lot myself, I find this works well when changing multiple timezones quickly.

permalinkmy plan was pretty much:
07:00(GMT): wake up, no breakfast (as I tend not to skip it anyway)
08:30(GMT): arrive at work
16:30(GMT): after working for 8 hours (no break, so that I could leave an hour earlier) buy a hamburger and eat on the train to the airport.
17:30(GMT): arrive at airport
20:00(GMT): take off. Eat a few snacks on the plane (as I hate the airline food).
22:00(EST): land in JFK. Buy some local snacks and eat them moderately until morning)
01:00-02:00(EST): Arrive at NYC. Wait for the bus.
03:00(EST): get on the bus.
12:00(EST): arrive at Pittsburgh. Check in/leave my buggage and go eat lunch.
34 hours... What was I thinking when I planned this madness?

I'm no physician, but a voice inside me says that not eating for 16 before going through ticketing/checkin, security, and delays isn't necessarily the best idea.
I recall the story of one fur, many conventions ago, who on his way home from a convention, and dashed out of the con and straight to the airport without eating anything. Airport security eventually found him passed out in the terminal, and it resulted in a hospitalization for the poor fellow. It was not the best way to end one's convention experience.

See, in order to fool your internal clock (the one tied to eating, you have to be hungry. It has to do with seasonal shifts in availability of food that triggers a shift in sleeping patterns, and therefore modern 'jet lag' that can be reset by making your body think that food isn't available at the times it thinks it should be. Then, when you eat at a new time, you basically tell your body that this is 'breakfast' and it resets itself.
I got this from a scientific study. Check out NPR, Talk of the Nation, Science Friday. 2 weeks ago, I believe. I thought it was rather compelling.

It was on May 23, actually. Listen specifically to what the researcher is saying at about 4:30 into the interview (summarized): By fasting for 12-16 hours and then eating "breakfast" you can theoretically reset your body's clock. I don't know of anyone who has done this, but it should theoretically be possible. (emphasis mine)
Let's not go passing off scientific conjecture as fact, 'kay?
