US Airways won't be doing this before Anthrocon.
United Airlines is only doing it for tickets purchased after today.
So for Anthrocon this year, it is a non-issue.

Still, future travel in general will be an even bigger drag, and I got a feeling that if fuel prices ever do go down, I doubt they'd change their new baggage costs.

permalinkThat was what I suggested a while ago when the topic of the "2nd bag charge" came up. I doubt once they (if ever) start recouping their losses and making a good profit again, that we'd see our standard services returned to us. Once they know they can charge us for something, they won't ever let it be free again.

I'm wondering if airlines have been *loosing* money so they put their prices up, or have they just not been making *as big* a profit as they used to.

permalinkWell, fuel prices are what...four times what they were 15 years ago? And double what they were 5 years ago? I'd say that it's entirely likely that they're losing money. But as per the laws of supply and demand, if they keep rising prices they're going to lose even more business, which might cause higher prices because nobody is going to fly anymore...then it'll become a vicious cycle until they collapse under themselves.

Lucky for me I bought and paid for my tickets back in April before the new fees for the 1st and 2nd baggage took place. AA wont charge you for the first two pieces if you purchased your tickets before May 12, and then the fee for the first checked luggage wont take effect until June 15th. As cheap as their getting due to the cost jet fuel, at least they had a grace period to those who bought before they fought. Weather they will keep it or not will determine if I will be able to go to next years con.

It's too bad that no one thinks to try and install hydrogen powered engines in mass transit vehicles. It may cost some at first, but I suspect it would quickly pay for itself.

permalinkMakes me glad i paid for Airtran. I wonder how long until the larger companies jump at the chance to make people pay for their bags as well?
Good to hear it won't affect others that are flying, though, i guess it's something to keep in mind for the future. :/

It's even hit the Vancouver International Airport. Now I'm REALLY afraid of flying. >_> And it's bad enough the airport became quite a scene because of last October's Taser Incident.
