Hi folks,

We will be upgrading from our current installation of Drupal to Drupal 4.7 very soon. The tenative date for this is Saturday, November 4th. After the upgrade is complete, we could use some help from folks in testing out the new site.

First, the good news:

- We'll have a faster, more robust version of Drupal serving up pages, and it will be better able to deal with the traffic that comes to this website.

- With an up to date version of Drupal, we will have more add-on modules available to us to install and use.

And now, the bad news:

- If you have a Buddy List, it will be reset. This is due to the unfortunate decision of that module's author NOT support a migration path from Drupal 4.6 to 4.7. There is nothing we can do about that. However, the new version does offer some additional features, such as being able to store your buddies into groups and to view each buddy's latest posts.

- user groups are also going to go bye-bye, at least for now. This is because of the sheer number of bugs that we encountered when trying to upgrade the existing module for Drupal 4.6. Since it seems that there are a number of problems with this module, we have made the decision to discontinue use of it at this time.

If anyone is interested in doing some "real time" testing next Saturday as we do the upgrade, please contact me privately or reply to this message.

Thanks!

Question:

Will the new version of Drupal be UBBC tags sensitive?

Using UBBC is alot easier the trying to use HTML.

What us "UBBC"? I googled for that and got "The University of Bristol Boat Club", which I'm assuming is NOT what you were referring to.

I'm venturing a guess, but I think that's "Universal Bulletin Board Codes"

Which I would assume to be the normal stuff on boards like VBB and PHPBB.

Well, I can comment on PHPBB codes. There is a module that claims to do them for Drupal 4.6. I tried installing it some months ago, and it turned out to be pretty awful. It threw Javascript errors all over the place and just didn't work.

When the upgrade to 4.7 is complete, we'll have a lot more modules at our disposal, and may be able to find something that meets everyone's needs.

Verdauga would happen to be correct.

But i was just wondering. I wasn't able to go over all of the modules, but there could easily be one for UBBC stuff.

Gotcha.

Once I get this Drupal issue taken care of, I can start looking at the other modules and see what toys are available. Smiling

P.S. Did we lose the groups? Was gunna sign up for the beta tester one and it has poofed, think I read that this new Drupal won't have the module installed, but can't remember.

Yeah, I forgot to move over the favicon.ico file over until after the upgrade was done. Browsers cache that file in really weird ways, so it should update sooner or later.

Yes, the groups went away. The reason for that was that some of the third party modules had some issues when trying to upgrade them, and Organic Groups was one of them. We now however have a Beta Testers Forum.

Just a note of curiosity, it took my firefox around 3 months to update that favicon =)

Yeah, browsers do some really weird caching of the favicon. And I don't know any way to force them to do reloads.

I know this might sound a little silly, but is there a reason why the avatars are on the right instead of the left. Pretty much all of them "face" to the right so it looks like they were looking at, or speaking the text in the old forums. It isn't a big deal, but I was just wondering about it.

Well, they've always been that way in Drupal.

Could I modify the templates and make the images be on the left? Sure. But then I would either have to make the range of the text be narrower OR have some really weird wrapping happen once the text gets past the picture, which would also look kinda odd. Taking all that into account, I think the best thing is to keep images on the right. Sticking out tongue

No big deal, this is the first forum I think I've seen use drupal. Pretty much every other forum I saw was using what the old forum used. Besides, this is much prettier. Maybe I'll flip my avatar around in photoshop or something haha.

One glitch I've noticed in both the old and new versions: The URL I've bookmarked for checking the forums is http://www.anthrocon.org/recent. This gives me a list of recent messages, and indicates which older threads have new replies, so I just click on the "# new" link to go straight to the first new reply.

But, if there are a lot of replies (multiple pages), that doesn't work -- instead of going to the new reply on the last page, it takes me to the first message on the first page.

It was this way on the old version too, as I saw it happen a couple of times there.

I'm not sure what the fix is, other than filing a bug against Drupal Core, and that will be so much fun...

I'm probably going to set up another forum for volunteering at some point in the future.

At this point, it's not too high on my list since the con is many months off and we usually don't get heavily into the volunteering stuff until the final month before the con.
