A question about checking in with the debit card (a problem)

I have a similar problem that others have presented. I live paycheck to paycheck and money has been extremely tight as of this year (what with losing a job and some other emergency costs). I've used my debit card to reserve a room (and have already taken care of the one-night stay reserve), however the rest of my roomies aren't showing up until Thurs or Fri (when they will be paying me), but I'm checking in Wednesday. I'm not going to have the full amount in my bank account to check in, will that cause a problem? Cause I only have about $550 something in my account and I DO need some money to spend at the con (like food and gas), which I will be taking about $200 out to ensure I can cover just those expenses. Even my credit card with it's very small lmit ($300) is maxed out.

What can I do? I don't want to be left out in the cold, seeing as how unexpected roomie events have taken place. Sad

Uncle Kage, I did see that, but it didn't really answer my question. Unless, basically there's no way around it, I definitely need to have the money before checking in. The room is under my name so I don't think I could go to anyone else, nor see about the Pre-Authorization Form.

If that's the case, I may have to go to my roomies and ask for the money up front.

Yes, you do have to have the money up front, either in cash or guaranteed on a credit card. Now, you can still use someone else's card. That's what the pre-authorization form is for.

The only other thing I can think of is to use a cash advance service (Like check n go) but I don't know how much they charge for the actual service as I've never actually used one myself.

Such companies are not one you want to be dealing with, even for quick money as you'd be amazed and shocked at how much you will OWE when paying them back. Next time you see one of those commercials, read their fine print really quick to see your monthly payments, with how much interest it'll cost, and how long the monthly payments would be. In a nutshell, you'd be paying back twice the amount you borrowed. I'd rather sell one of my kidneys on the Black Market than go through one of those loan services. Eye-wink

I checked in today the 25th at the Westin.

The front desk informed me that they REQUIRED an additional 40% deposit for the duration of our stay, even though we already paid the room stay deposit in cash for all our nights, to alleviate any damages you may render to your room or if you happen to smoke in your room. Also, your room is REQUIRED to be accessible by the hotel room housekeeping after 10am everyday to check for cleanliness, and if your room is unclean, you will be assessed an additional $50 fee for each occurrence. Now back to the subject of the additional deposit, we are staying till Monday morning, meaning this is an Acct hold on my bank acct for an additional $230 since I did not have the adequate amount of cash.

I would of really appreciated a forewarning to the mandatory charge. I understand the hotel must cover its bases due to the state of the previous convention years.

I had the choice to pay with cash or use my debit card, but I wouldn't receive my room keys or even a "pending/checked in status" until the room deposit and the additional 40% deposit were made. A front desk associate assured me they would negate any overdrafts the additional deposit may incur. I didn't want to cause drama and accepted it.

If this mandatory additional deposit can be alleviated and my account replenished (since it is now sitting $230 in the red), great, if not, then I just have to accept being poor until the con is over.

This is just a forewarning post for you all.

If i am wrong about any of this, PLEASE CORRECT ME!
