"Buh?"

Hello.

I am headed to the con in a few days, and was thinking on making a last minute purchase so I can capture some video this year. I have never owned a camcorder before, and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on which one I should get. Should it be DVD recordable, or have a hard drive? Brand names, and any experience you have had would be helpful in me making a decision. I was looking around on Amazon at some reviews of ones that I liked, but there are always a few bad reviews. So I thought I'd ask people who have probably filmed furrys before. =3 I'd say my price limit would be $450, but I would like to spend less if I could.

Thanks.

Canon, Panasonic and Sony build fantastic cameras.

Hard drive: no.
DVD recorder: no.
MiniDV or other format of tape: very yes.

Tape's the most versatile, you can do a lot with it, it stores a lot, it's cheap to replace and reusable.

You can find minidv camcorders fairly cheap in any electronics store. Definitely for less than 400 dollars.

I second the Canon. Canon has been some of our most reliable cameras at work. However, make sure to find out if the video data can be transferred with the included cable. Some cameras only transfer their pictures with the USB cable.

Hard Drive camcorders are okay, but the chances of a fault increase dramatically.

DVD camcorders are terrible. Waiting for the disc to format is a pain. Some moments in life happen too quickly.

MiniDV camcorders are good. Apart from the fast-forwarding and rewinding, it's still your best bet.

Make sure to get a service plan with the camcorder. Some of the manufacturers' own warranties only cover parts faulting, and most not even for a year.

All miniDV camcorders will transfer video via firewire, which is the recommended way of capturing video. Any piece of editing software can capture video through firewire, you need special drivers to capture through USB and it's muuuchhh slooweerrr and sometimes not at a full 24fps.

Man, wish I would have checked this earlier. I ended up buying a Sony MiniDV handycam. Thank you for responding though, I appreciate the help. =3

What I would recommend for using at con would be the little aiptek HD memorycard camcorder bestbuy sells. Its cheap (about 160ish) and has excellent video and sound quality. The only down side is the lack of zoom (only like 4x digital) so it would be up to you if you think you'd need it or not. Plus small and light-weight (which means you might be more apt to lug it around with you)

If you're looking to get a lot of zoom then I'd recommend the same Canon, Sony, and panasonic with tape..

I like the little memory stick camcorders b/c its easy to edit and upload your video without having to transfer it through fire-wire (if your computer has it) or usb a/v slot and waiting minute to minute for the file to xfer.

Anywho Hope that helps!
