July 5th through the 8th, according to this nifty flyer I have posted in my office here. On July 8th, 2007, I will become 26 years old... and this is both a good thing and a bad thing. My family won't be able to see me on my birthday, but they know that I'll be back, but to be at Anthrocon on my birthday is the best possible present to myself ever. And to think I never thought about this until now... |

the 5th is my 23 birthday, so i know how ya feel. unfortunately I think im gonna require a virgin sacrifice in order to get walmart to let me take time off directly after July 4th to go on a trip. Dont think there is any other way unless I can find a better job out there long before the con hits.

Best way of getting time off is letting your workplace know *far* beforehand, especially when it comes to Wal-Mart. You might have to start stepping on toes with them. (I used to work for Wal-Mart, so I know how you feel.)
BTW, if anyone misread my post, my birthday landing on Anthrocon is a *good* thing to me.
There would be no better time in the world.

Sadly, my birthday is the day AFTER the last day of AC, bleh. But I think I will just celebrate there anyways. And yeah, ask off early and ask questions, if nobody has asked off yet, document that you have requested first (Put in print your request or use email and make sure it is dated).

doesnt work quite that well. basically because its so close to a holiday, my manager is gonna see my request and go " too close to a holiday, we need you more than you need to go to your little trip" and then he will just clear out my request without even considering it. I managed to make it to last year despite it being on fathers day simply because I put that request into my job application. I told them taht there was an event coming up that I needed to make it to. They hired me on the agreement that I would be allowed to go. That wont work for another year unfortunately.

This is where the fine art of negotiation comes into play.
If your manager doesn't want to approve your request because he is afraid of losing something (your ability to work that day), then you need to offer him something in return. For example, you could offer to put in extra hours for Christmas of New Years.
Just make sure that if you do that, you get the approval in writing.
