I was just talking with my group of friends here, and one of them mentioned that the Piano was going to be off limits? A friend of mine in the group is going to bring his acoustic guitar so that when things died down a bit, some folks could play yadda yadda, can anyone confirm this? That way we don't feel stupid, heh. |

I'm pretty sure that last year it had a "do not play" sign on it. I'm not 100% sure though.

The hotel has requested that the guests do not play the pianos.

permalinkIndeed, it seems that the hotel usually does request that. But...then why have it there? That's the same thing as buying a car to get to work then leaving it in the garage and taking the bus.
While I understand their desire to keep noise and bad music-playing to a minimum, it seems awfully easy to give someone a chance then just kick them off and lock the keyboard down if they fail.
And I've seen and heard quite a few people who had plenty of good talent on the piano during these cons. Are there ways for guests to request play time if they so desire? I enjoy listening to people play sometimes.

If you look around the hotel, you'll find a number of various items which, in your own home, you would put to functional use. For example, mirrors in the elevator. However in a hotel, they serve only as decoration to create a specific atmosphere.

They are primarily for hired professionals to create a mood in the hotel atrium for weddings and other appropriate formal events. Anthrocon is not one of those events, so the pianos were closed.
Other musical events were officially scheduled, such as Bucktown Tiger on the keyboard and Alexander Adams. Those who wish to musically perform at Anthrocon are encouraged to contact Programming and schedule a timeslot.

Well , while you and your friends may be talented , not everyone is ..
And from personal experience (2006) when the piano was not locked ,
You could hear DREADFUL music covering all other sounds in the lobby.
