I plan on volunteering next year but before I do so, I have a question.

Is there anyway on specifying which area you want to volunteer for?

Yeah, you ask us in Ops or check in directly with the department head of where you want to volunteer. Smiling

To be a bit more detailed - if you want to work in a specific area, it's best you contact the head for that area well before the con, and volunteer to be part of that staff.

If you volunteer at the con, you pretty much get what comes up. There's no guarantee the departments you want will ever need people.

And if you're still around by Sunday night, and the department director has seen you around all weekend doing a good job, chances are you'll get invited to join staff.

Volunteering in advance is wise because there may be things you need to know, or early stuff happening that you can help with. For instance, we need help unloading the truck at 7 am Thursday at the convention center. (The rule is, we carry the stuff to the tailgate and the Teamsters take it from there.)

Art Show always needs bag checkers and people to sign up bidders. Volunteers are important because once you get up to speed, it'll give our staff members a break so they can enjoy some of the con.

Trying to tempt me, eh? Laughing out loud

Well, the idea of being able to join staff is extremely tempting.

Anywho, question. What if i wanted to volunteer for the Supersponsor lounge? Who would I contact about that? And what about regulating the time I'm volunteering? Meaning I don't want to be volunteering all the time. Just most of it. Laughing out loud

As green as i am, i think it's safe to say that we'd never keep a volunteer past the time they wanted to go. As a volunteer, it's your responsibility to keep track of the time you work and the times when you'd like to disappear, and we're very grateful for anything you can do for us.

Being on staff means that there are times when your area just *really* needs all the people it can get; that time is different for each department. During the more low-key times, we try to make sure that everyone gets time off, especially for events we really want to attend. And while i don't think petercat would have done anything serious to any of us if we were going to be elsewhere for a major art show event, like check-in or one of the closeouts, he's so sweet to us that it's hard to deny him anything. I think it's all part of his cunning plan.

Lemme just say, 08 was my first Anthrocon, and my first con in general. I volunteered and had a great time!

I stuffed what felt like a million bags (and had a great time joking and being goofy with the other bag stuffers), helped out at the registration line (which was really easy once they showed me how to do it), and even once got to help the Dorsai run the elevators on the first floor.

They were always really good about releasing me when I desired to go, but more often than not I picked times when I wasn't really busy to go volunteer. Usually I ended up asking if there was absolutely anything else I could do for them.

I did have the fun time of getting to tag along with Chiaroscuro to one of the Staff meetings after breaking down reg. And I tell ya, despite the horror tales, I'm thinking of joining staff as a general gopher and runaround lackey Smiling

I'm glad your first Anthrocon was such a fine time, and that you enjoyed volunteering for registration help and other such. We can always use more lackeys, so yes, consider joining staff next year.. Smiling
