I have just learned from the Pittsburgh Convention and Visitor's Bureau that the official estimate of the economic impact of Anthrocon 2008 on the city was $3,082,000. That is due primarily to purchases of Fernando's Lasagna Wraps.

In 2007, Anthrocon was the 9th largest convention in the city in terms of direct spending.

They scritch our ears, we scritch theirs.

ooooooo the pizza, the mushroom cheesey pizza, the tuna subs *drooooools* that's a con highlight for me every year, that sub shop is totally phenomenal!

also ate at the steel city diner for breakfast. it was pretty good..save for the odd tastes when some one before you ordered extra pepper or something, so your french toast comes out tasting like pepper grounds... but other then that, was pretty tasty ^.^

hehehe, fernando's + furries = love

Bumped to the front page. (Mainly because I didn't want people to keep seeing "Countdown to Anthrocon 2008" Sticking out tongue )

Heh, I was hanging out with the AFR crew at Fernando's when you came in to get a said Lasagna Wrap. Woe unto Orim Katsu for eating the last one!

What'd you decide to buy after coming back in anyway?

I've always wondered how they come to these numbers... I mean, I know we didn't EACH spend about a grand while in Pittsburgh.

Each dollar spent is counted multiple times -- you pay $5 to Fernando for a sandwich, he pays his workers, they buy groceries, etc. and it ripples throughout the local economy. There's some formula they use. Frankly I think it's a bit exaggerated if they base it on attendance and calculate it the same way as for business conventions, with people on expense accounts instead of spending their own money, but it works in our favor. Eye-wink

In a nutshell, it's not just the attendees—it's also the infrastructure necessary to feed and lodge 3,390 people for a 3-5 day event and all the ancillary costs associated with it. Everything from the Steel City Diner's t-shirts to renting the DLCC could be included in that number. It all adds up.

The next time I go to AC, I gotta visit Fernando's since everyone's talking about it. Usually I go to Subway or Pizza Parma on the corner of 9th and Penn.
