Suggestion: Art Supplies
|
|
Are there any Dick Blick or other art supplies stores in the Pittsburgh vicinity? Considering how many Artists attend the con each year, I can't help but think that having a small booth with pencils, sketch books, inking pens, etc. would make quite good business at AC. At '08 i've talked to a few artists, and many of them had forgotten one piece of artsy equipment or another, myself included. (forgot my pencil case at home) I was also told that a few years back there had been a small fed-ex booth outside the artists' hall, for allowing people to send off commissions right at the con. Something like that, just for art supplies. Also if anyone knows, how well did that fed-ex booth do? they werent there this year, and as far as I remember not last year either, which was the first AC I went to. I apologize if this is the wrong area of the forum for such a suggestion. |

Googling "art supplies pittsburgh" shows a handful of stores in the greater Pittsburgh area, but none in the immediate vicinity of the convention center. It's hard to guess whether it'd be worth their while to get space in the Dealers Room, since they'd have to factor in the costs of paying employees to transport their wares to the convention center, setting it up, staffing the table, and so forth. I seem to recall some dealer mentioning they'd have some supplies like sketch books/pads, etc.
In 2006 there was a UPS store across the street from the Westin, and they set up a booth outside Hall C on Sunday afternoon. I'm not sure why they didn't return last year, but I'm told the store itself closed for good a month or so ago. The nearby FedEx store down the block was open on Sunday afternoon. We were giving out the address at the Art Show for people who needed it.

I am going to investigate carrying some basic supplies, such as sketch books, in the Con Store next year. My primary concern is that 1) we're not in competition with another dealer to sell the same items, and 2) we're not saddled with inventory that we're going to have to lug around year after year. We will be talking about possibilities next year, I'm sure.

permalinkYeah, that certainly makes sense. you should probably do a test year, just with a few items, and see how people buy it, but it would have to be placed/advertised in such a way that people could see it. More buyers would certainly be ensured if they were to carry AC logos on them, perhaps with the 2009 catchphrase 'OMG aliens'
What would also be great if there were some kind Services Booth, again away from the general artist areas, for services, such as Laminators and scissors, secured with thin chains or locks of some kind so that they wouldn't get Stolen.
Maybe even printing or scanning equipment, although that would be a whole other story, and would require more people to run and operate, but it would be very convenient for people with laptops.
Just throwing ideas out about what could be done, not what would necessarily be practical or financially feasible.
