A question regarding this:
"Character drawing must be an original, generic creation. Named, published, or copyrighted characters, personas, characters from comic strips, or characters from art sets are not permitted..."

What if we own that character?
Is this a rule against breaking copywrite laws, or can we not even use characters from our own creations - say, for example, we have a webcomic of our own.
Additionally, does this rule out personal fursonas?

We would like to highlight artist talent, but we want to avoid in-jokes and brand endorsement via serial or personal characters. Those would only speak to the select individuals that "get" it and it puts Anthrocon at risk of appearing to endorse a product. Since these ads may appear at non-furry cons, comic book shops, periodicals, or elsewhere, the goal is to use general-purpose characters that don't have a commercial or cliquish meaning to a subset of our intended audience.

Where can a version without the box and ? be found so that artists dont have to try and remove them from their submissions?

You don't need to submit the entire ad. All you need is a character. We'll do the rest. Smiling

Sorry if this is a stupid questiong, but do you expect the entry to fit into the box advertized on the front page? I mean are you pretty liberal on a character getting beamed up or do you want it to fit into the origional "Beam with anthrocon over the top.?"

It doesn't have to be precise, but it does have to "work." By that, I mean it needs to be able to be arranged or resized in a way that looks good in the image as a whole without blocking text or unbalancing the other elements, while still communicating the "getting beamed up" concept. Use your best judgement as an artist.

So, what are the ideal dimensions for the piece in inches, length and width?

It is expected that submissions will be a reasonable ratio for the example image above, e.g. not 900x10, etc. Since the piece is requested in 600dpi, we will proportionally resize it to the appropriate dimensions for the image.

It does not have to be precisely within the dotted lines of the solicitation. That is just an advertisement to elicit candidates. You can disregard the dotted-line box and question mark when developing your submission.

We're searching for what looks good on the ad, not who can avoid going outside the lines.

No, that would be an anthro bull.

I believe that he is making a reference to Gary Larson - or to a "Darkwing Duck" episode, featuring Intergalactic cows from the Planet Larson, on The Far Side of the galaxy.

"...The Cows are Not what they Seem..."

EDIT: ...You know...think about that for a minute. Hmmm...Gary Larson...

How is this year's theme different from the 2006 one? (Wasn't that space-oriented as well?) I'm having a hard time visualizing some concepts for the convention -- not the promotion flyer, I mean, but in general for art shows and/or prints.

2007's theme was "Looking To The Future", which was aimed at both bookending the previous year's "Making History" and as a statement on Anthrocon's future in Pittsburgh.

As a tagline, it worked well. Creatively, however, "Making History" was everything that could ever have happened, and "Looking To The Future" was everything that could ever be. Adding them together resulted in pretty much everything imaginable.

So 2008 and 2009's themes are more concise: "It's a Jungle Out There", focusing on jungle stuff, and "OMG Aliens!" focusing on alien characters and concepts. Some examples include Larry Niven's Kzinti, Biker Mice From Mars, Duck Dodgers, etc. Or create your own alien furry ideas.

I'm a bit bothered by this, for there seems to be either an inconsistancy, - you are contradicting the limits Immelman asked about, and that you explained your reasoning for - or a wish for something so broadly known (and commercial) that it excludes fan-produced concepts.

Ken Pick and Waverly Pierre III, for example, have written about a few furry "alien" races, set in a universe conceived initially by Kurt Miller - primarily The Fox-like Thalendri, with the Bird-like Skreeln and the Quellan, a race most closely related to Octopi and Cuttlefish, and intelligent enough to be super-elite software programmers. Several stories about the Thalendri were printed in YARF!, for example...

...But in an earlier post on this subject, it was stressed that you did not wish art submissions involving individuals' already developed characters or concepts, as that might be too "exclusive" and not broadly enough known. "Duck Dodgers" is certainly widely enough known - at least, to the same age demographic that remembers reading YARF! - but is no more "OMG Aliens!" than is what is being parodied, i.e. Buck Rogers. Future rocket travel between the planets, yes, but not "Strange Alien Ways", really. Marvin the Martian, as entertaining as he is, doesn't really count, now - does he?

At what point do you wish to set the "broadly understood" vs. "Unique and somewhat niche" line? Do you REALLY wish to exclude or discourage talent with established credentials in this fandom, for something more likely to be recognised in a more Mundane world?

It makes one wonder - who is this convention FOR, anyway?

I'm afraid you've confused the rules for submitting to the advertising campaign, in which the convention as a corporate entity is limited in what it can accept and publish per ownership, copyright and trademark law, with the general theme of the convention, in which the imagination expressable by the individual attendees is limitless.

Additionally, putting someone's established product on Anthrocon's advertising flyers would imply that Anthrocon is promoting or is sponsored by said product, the same way that a beer company might put their name above Anthrocon's if they sponsored the convention, or the way that Star Wars characters appear on McDonald's soda cups. Everything being equal, the same applies to individuals contibuting to the ad campaign.

This only applies to situations where it could be implied that Anthrocon is specifically taking advantage of said products for gain, such as advertising, and does not apply to most other convention-oriented activities which may interpret the theme as broadly as desired. The line drawn may be arguable and fuzzy, but it is drawn at the convention's discretion and we choose to place it where it currently lies.

Per the Guidelines, the drawing will be held on 5/1/09. We'll have various advertising deadlines coming up (we just had four on 9/30-10/1) which will require new art, so the earlier we get submissions, the more opportunities those qualified submissions will have to be used. We'll look into the current submissions and see what works best for the target in mind. Any submissions that don't get used will be featured in a gallery around con time.

Oh, very cool! Thanks for clearing that up for me. One last thing, is there a link to the guidelines? There are a couple of questions I have, like, how many submissions are allowed and such. Thanks, again! Smiling
