Adults-Only RP Etiquette Panel Sponsored by The Rabbit Hole - Anyone Interested?
|
(Initial Note to the Mods: If this discussion is in the wrong thread, please move it at your convenience!) (Also, quick plug for those who haven't been there: Visit the Rabbit Hole at http://rh.greydawn.net/index.php) Who here would be interested in seeing an Adults-Only RP Etiquette panel at AC next year? I've been thinking about organizing a panel for RP Etiquette, and will probably need some extra people, since Seppel and I (and maybe one other) cannot possibly carry that float alone. It would cover a few topics, including (but not limited to) (oh, and I'd like each of these topics to be its own separate discussion): That's all I've come up with so far, and am definitely open to suggestions. If you're honestly interested in this idea, here's what you can do: E-mail "rabbitholeseppel@gmail.com" with your information and a paragraph or two on which part of the panel you'd be interested in heading and why. We will need you to actually write a 7-10 minute informative piece for the panel, since we want this to actually be informative, and not just a bitch-fest (I mean, it can be a bitch-fest, but let's reserve it for the Q&A portion at the end). Also, writing an actual paper will mean that, if for any reason you don't end up coming to AC, we'll still be able to use your information and give you credit for the work you put into it. I've been a part of a many panels in my time for a many different conventions, so I like to think I know what I'm doing, but please, like I've repeated now a few times, I'm open to suggestions, so even if you're not interested in presenting, leave an idea or two on this post! Hopefully, I'll be able to cooperate with a few of you, and we can get together at AC '09 and actually make this thing work! Wouldn't that be fun?! =D =D I feel like I should have something like a deadline on here, so I'm going to say that for initial contact, and me having chosen who I'd like to have to have on the panel (not a paper date!), April 2009, (of course, if you have finished your paper by then, you'll have an advantage toward winning my favor =D) Then, there'll be a few months (AC '09 is July 2 through July 5, 2009) to develop your paper and send it to me for review. I will need final papers by at least the week before AC, June 27th, so that I have time to make sure they all fit together and to help you make any edits/changes that might need to happen. As soon as the AC '09 page is set-up, I'll go ahead and suggest the panel (unless a Mod, or someone in the know has a better suggestion!). |

Question: iSkunk and i have been talking off and on about trying to piece together a discussion of gender issues in the furry community, both inside and outside rp situations. Does it make any sense for these two to happen in conjunction, since it seems like they're rather closely related? Or would that just stretch the bounds of your panel beyond where you'd want it to go?
Just a thought.

They're related, but I don't think we'd have the time to get into the depth that that particular subject would need (which is why it sounds like you've got a good idea for a panel). What I would say, though, is that we could have it be one of the topics covered, if you (or iSkunk) wanted to write an abridged version of your topic, you could use it during the course of the presentation, and then say "this will be followed through more on our panel tomorrow!" or "If you had seen our panel earlier, you might recognize some of these issues."
All-in-all, I would like gender identity/character gender vs player gender/gender preference to be part of my panel (I will edit-add it to the list above), since I think it's a valid RP Etiquette question - should the question of player gender vs character gender be addressed? Isn't it "roleplay" because people are playing a role, not necessarily fulfilling one they live every day?
Anyway, let me know what you think!

Callista pretty much said what I'd have said. Gender can be a significant issue in roleplay (cue the whole discussion of male vs. female avatars in WoW, for starters), but it would still be one significant issue of many, and the focus of this panel on RP etiquette (and less on RP philosophy/theory) wouldn't lend it much additional emphasis.
A cameo appearance wouldn't be a bad idea, however, if our panel is happening in the same con

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a "cameo"! I hope you'll consider it while preparing for your own panel.

I think it's safe to say we'll be looking into it.
Similarly, if you wanted to make a cameo or join us in our pre-panel discussion of how to set this up, i think you'd be welcome. No stress; just leaving the door open.

I can think of a few to discuss in a panel about RPing, but it depends on my paper and project load for College.
