There is a furry convention in California, FurCon, which has already happened this year.
http://www.furtherconfusion.org/fc2009/
2,423 attendees this year.
I see your comment in your profile, "Furaffinity still down!?!?!"... That's what you get when you put everything on ONE server and don't have a contingency plan. I never really liked FA anyway with the stupid "you must sign in to verify you're 18" thing. It isn't required legally in the US, nor is it helpful for attracting users. 6th circuit court make a ruling on this when someone appealed about the needing a question form asking if you're 18 or older for mature material, stating there is no legal requirement anymore to verify age on material (obvious)sites. The other thing is, even if it asks if you're 18, why would someone NEED to sign in, useless and bothersome.

Theres FC aka Further Confusion held annually in the San Francisco bay area. Its very similar to AC in many ways, although run somewhat differently. Its also one of the largest fur cons in the world, with only AC outranking it. From what I was told, its very relaxed and laid back (as is much of the west coast) and the con goers there are more interested in gatherings then the panels/events itself. Being that you are from that area, I think your enjoy it very much. Not to say AC is any less enjoyable as long as you go with a group of friends. Usually the events here are more interesting, so interesting in fact, I had difficultly dividing my time up! Id say give both a try.
Then theres Califur held in Southern California annually. I know little about it other then its a lot smaller... compared to AC and FC anyway. I imagine its still the same thing; your just be running into the same people a lot more often.
Finally, if those don't suit you, there might also be a small informal fur gathering or two in your area. Inquire about it.

permalinkI went to both Further Confusion and Anthrocon this year. I had a blast at both cons! Only difference is that FC takes place at a hotel, while AC has a convention center. FC is outgrowing their current venue and the hotel sold out of rooms within 3 day of the room block opening. FC takes place at the San Jose Doubletree hotel, it's like 5 minutes away from the San Jose International Airport. The hotel offers free shuttle service between the hotel and airport. Food wise, hotel food is quite pricey and you have to walk a few blocks for some reasonably priced food.

permalinkYes the food selection was quite limited without a car. In the immediate vicinity, the eatery of choice was Denny's (shudder). The service people were quite friendly, but probably because they were getting 50% of FC's food business. There was a Subway opening close by that I saw back in 07, but I don't know if it is still there. Otherwise, there's a slew of smaller places like bagel shops and sandwich places that are farther away and closed most of the weekend, again diverting more business towards Denny's.
-Okay, we're up to one (1) so far...
