If we could get one band to play for like a day, who would you want it to e? Their newest album has to be Sci FI based though. |

Daft Punk... although Daft Punk isn't much of a band.

Why not? They perform live on stage.. Is a band defined by it's choice of instruments, or as a collection of musicians?

Considering they are guys in robot suits, I don't think the idea of people in animal suits would seem so strange to them.

I don't think they would do that. They would probably just wear their regular robot outfits. It fits the theme, and they're still in costume, so why have them change just for us? It would be enough if we could get them to begin with.
I really think it would be cool if they went there. They were one of the first bands I actually bought a CD of. I love all of their music, and would love to see them live.

Their pyramid show would be great for the rave, how ever I don't think AC would like having to deal with up to 10,000+ extra attendees.

That would be seriously awesome, and the only way I could think of dealing with extra people is to have it set up somewhere inside the con, or only allow con members to attend.

That would mean people would only have to buy a con membership
50 USD for a Daft Punk show? Damn, thats cheap.

If they did that, it would certainly be a record number of AnthroCon attendees! XD
But seriously, perhaps instead they could just charge AC members to get in to see them. Or, make it exclusive to Sponsors and SuperSponsors, and if those with regular admission want to get it, they just have to pay the difference.
However, this is all speculation, if it is even possible for Kage to get them, because I'm sure they won't do a concert for free, or even if they charged, I'm sure it would be much more than the AC staff can afford, no matter how much they charged to see them.

1) They would charge us a boatload of money.
2) Even if they did it for free, they would need tons of space. All we have available is the Grand Ballroom.
3) The setup and teardown of the equipment would take an entire day, and we cannot spare that much ballroom time.
4) Even if we spared that amount of ballroom time, the electric bill would probably give you sticker shock. It costs us several thousand dollars just to run our dances.

DragonForce might not charge THAT much, as they are still fairly small, and a lot of the equipment, IE the speakers, can be used for the dance, and the fact that they use a synth also makes it easier, they dont use many lights or stuff... All theyll have to take down are the drums and stuff.

Speculation is fun, but we're not bringing live plugged in bands to Anthrocon in the near future. There are many reasons for this, but if we decided to reverse this decision, it would be for bands who somehow belong under the umbrella of the furry fandom. Bands like Daft Punk would not be appropriate.

Then why not a "Talent show" of sorts?

permalinkSee Kage's response above, point 2 + 4 specifically. The only place it could currently be held would be the Ballroom, which is already packed as far as scheduling goes. The second point is that the electric bill would be astronomical. It's not going to happen in the current space.
Before you ask or suggest it, doing it in the DLCC is also out of the question for financial reasons. The setup, both for the seating and the electrical work, would have to be done by union personnel. It could not be done in Hall B (the new Dealer's Room/Art Show/ Artist's Alley location). It would take away space that the con is spending more money for because Hall C was too cramped.
I don't know what space in the DLCC costs. I can guarantee it's expensive. Kage might only have to raise attendance fees by $20 or $30 a head to afford the extra. As a person who is a supersponsor when I attend (7 years), Kage has asked (in effect) whether or not he can eliminate the Supersponsor Lounge without alienating me and others like me. If he's seriously considering eliminating the Lounge, he's not going to spend the money to arrange this kind of musical "Talent Show".

A talent show and live concerts are very different events, and as a result have very different challenges to overcome in order to pull them off. Without hearing from KP on the subject, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a talent show in the future.
To some extent, the Masquerade allows folks an opportunity to show off musical talent, as well.

Care to name me some groups/bands/artists that would fall under the umbrella of the fandom? Because none come to mind for me.
I was thinking Daft Punk because this year's theme was to be sci-fi, and they wear costumes. Even when talking about this, I knew it was never going to happen, but it is fun to dream.

I was referring to bands that happen to have members who are furries. I don't expect you're going to find any well known pop group that fits the bill.
There's no harm in discussing the what-ifs, as long as nobody confuses what-if for what-is

...no?
As I stated above, we don't schedule live, plugged in, bands at AC. If you've got an acoustic musical act, then you'd want to submit the idea here:

I can't speak for the programming department, of course

Yeah, pretty much everything I've been talking about has been what-ifs. That's why I stated earlier "this is all speculation"
Considering the popularity of the bands mentioned and the cost and procedures, I knew that there would be practically no chance at getting them anyway. Like many of you have said, AC isn't big enough to have live plugged in bands.
