This is the lowest point of the year, activity-wise. The forums will pick up, especially in the new year. (Hmm, I should create some sort of graph of forum activity... the data is certainly there...)
As for what you can expect, it depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for programming, we have that. If you're looking for fursuiting, you'll find a bit of that too.
If you haven't been there yet, we have a ton of information for new convention goers over here.

permalinkThis forum is active, but you've hit it at a slow point. The staff is still recovering from AC 2008, and the initial flood of post-con responses from the attendees have slowed down. Things will pick up later.
As to what to expect, if you look to the left under Attendee Info and Events, you'll see a list of what the con itself offers. Possibly more important than the scheduled events, you'll find well over 3,000 people with similar interests. Making new friends can be more important (and fun) than anything the con itself offers.
(With the exception of Uncle Kage's Story Hour, of course. Almost forgot to CMA for a minute...)
If you can be more specific about what you're asking when you say "What can I really expect?," we may be able to give more specific answers. You may also want to check out the Standards of Conduct on the left as well. They include things which will not be tolerated and may influence your expectations.

Sorry for butting in but what exactly is Kage's story hour? does the guy in the white lab coat yack about whatever for an hour or is it like a time when people get together and have a few brew and yack? lol

permalinkDoctor Samuel Conway (Uncle Kage) has an unfortunate attribute: he's a wierdness attractor. And I'm not talking about his association with furry.
Strange things happen to (and around) him. He takes in his car for normal maintenance and the engine explodes while being cleaned, for example. These things are often not humorous at the time, but somehow he relates these events at Story Hour and people fall on the floor laughing.

I guess I should say, Im new to the whole furry community totally lol Always had a thing for Wolves, strong likes for a very noble creature and they have always seem to be at ease around me(real wolves) and kinda at a point were I wanna go explore new mediums.
I dunno what to expect, or find for that matter, kinda just felt like maybe it was time to come looking for something. I guess hopping to find friends maybe I can go to a convention one day collage will dictate my ability.
I have read the New to Anthrocon and all.
Sounds like a fun event. Maybe good I came on here during a slower time to easy myself into it lol

There is in fact a furry convention in Jacksonville: Megaplex. http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_furry_convention_resources has a list of all active furry conventions, by the by.

It can depend on the convention, to some extent. Having only attended Ac recently, that's what i can describe, though most furry cons have a fair amount in common.
With AC, the experience can be overwhelming, in some respects; the folks around you are like-minded people, but there are still over 3,000 of them, which is a big number to have all tucked into a couple buildings no matter what the circumstances. And if you're not someone who leaps into making friends really easily, sometimes you can end up feeling curiously isolated at the same time. Of course i'm not the sort who usually likes crowds much.
But there's also a lot to get excited about. 2's and Kage's acts always crack me up, and sometimes there are other comedic acts as well, like a group doing furry-themed improv. The artwork in the show, in artists' alley, and around the dealers' room is amazing; i've been told by others that it's rare to find an art show with work as high caliber as the stuff at AC. Wandering around the dealer's room is always fun, and it's not uncommon for me to see something new that really appeals to me. There are fursuits everywhere, clowning and playing like the characters at disneyland, and there's always a room full of folks playing roll-play games, and another full of folks bonding over videogames, and sometimes a third room where folks are starting up a live action role play. Late at night, the dances rock with various forms of techno and electronic music expertly spun by some of our own. The dorsai are careful to keep everything safe and appropriate, but they're also very nice about it, so it's a relaxed atmosphere. Volunteer to help out, and you'll be welcomed with open arms and get an opportunity to meet interesting new folks while you're on duty. Wandering the halls is sort of like wandering the halls everywhere, except there are ears and tails and animal shirts and collars and wings everywhere, so you prettymuch know that here's one place you can scream your love of furries to the sky. There are also a lot of signs of typical geekdom, so you can be pretty free about that part of your life as well.
I do recommend spending some time around furry-friendly places like the mucks and message boards and livejournal communities to get your feet wet and meet a few new friends first, but all in all i think cons are definitely worth the trip. If you're not sure, you could try going to megaplex for a day just to get a feeling for things; the first time i went to AC, it helped having it in my backyard so that i knew i could leave anytime i wanted.

There are other furry resources you might look into to discover about the fandom, by the by; I'm pretty sure there's a Livejournal community for Florida Furries; There are online social hangouts like FurryMUCK and Secondlife; there are art resources like ArtSpots, VCL, or FurAffinity. Plenty more than just this site.
And Megaplex has, like all furry conventions, its own character, its own administration, events, attendees, location, and more. While all furry cons will have some similarities, they're not 'a smaller Anthrocon', anymore than Anthrocon is 'a bigger Megaplex'.
