I'm not sure what to put here except that Im a total newbie to con-going, and I'd like to find a roommate as I'm not sure if my friend is able to go!

It is not a good idea to deal in "not sure." This year, a nonrefundable down payment will be required when you make a hotel reservation. Anyone who is smart will ask for a similar down payment from any person staying in the room; thus, once you arrange a roomshare, you may well be financially committed.

Best to wait until your friend is sure about going.
