Theme Song
Since I remember that last years unofficial (or was it official?) theme song was Guns 'N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle", I figured that this year ought to have it's own as well. As such, I wonder who thinks what song would fit the theme of "OMG Aliens!" well. Lemme know.
As for mine, I think Muse's "Knights of Cydoina" would be a decent fit for two big reasons:
The spaceship sound at the opening of the the song.
The title of the song referring to Cydonia Mensae, or the "Face on Mars".
"Popular Culture" includes many things which are transitorily common and familiar to broad masses, but those masses are often a small, age-defined subset... I don't believe that I have EVER heard anything by a musical group called "Muse". I am sure that I am not alone in this.
yeah uh muse are widely regarded as one of the most innovative bands in rock and have won countless awards, but sure, that works, too.
as for theme song, i'm putting in a vote for pinball wizard by the who because i would really like to have a pinball machine to play at AC and the likelihood will increase if we do that.
Awesome post, and I also vote for the Close Encounters theme. Knights of Cydonia is an ok song (I'm listening to it for the first time now), but it just doesn't say "aliens" to me.
Come to think of it, it doesn't really give any sort of impression or emotion (aside from vaguely reminding me of the original Lost in Space theme), it's just kinda there. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's a decent song, it just doesn't convey an emotion in the way that a theme song should.
Movie and TV soundtracks are typically very good at conveying feelings, since that's their principle function, but rock songs can (and often do) do it as well. Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark", for example, is a wonderfully powerful song, especially the opening.
I'll flip through my music collection tonight and see if anything else comes to mind to fit this theme.

Being much older than the average poster here, I'd suggest the Heat Ray theme from Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War of the Worlds, but the music (and the reference) would probably be missed by everyone...
Wanna know what screams aliens to me? Judas at the Opera, by EdGuy. Iyts about an Alien Peacock with a pink lightsaber being chased into an opera house by alien bounty hunters.
To Qa'a B. Kebauet:
I have been thinking about the response that I gave to your post; and having read and reread it, it leaves me with a nasty aftertaste in my mouth.
I apologise. You deserved a better response than the one I gave you. Your topic is a good one, and should have more and friendlier responses and counter-suggestions than what I offered. Perhaps I should have taken the time, made the effort to track down and listen to the title which you suggested, before commenting like that.
Are there any _other_ possible theme songs which you would care to suggest? And if so - where might we find them?
With regerets,

Although not quite much to do with aliens, but in general is 'space/other being' related; and quite popular or well known. The Doctor Who theme? At least that's what comes to my mind when I think of AC2009 OMG ALIENS! *giggles to self* In fact I am quite hoping that the Doctor makes an appearance this year.
Knights of Cydonia is a good one. I second that.
Also, I'm gonna go ahead and suggest the obligatory DragonForce before anyone else does. I also suggest the entire album "Ziltoid The Omniscient" by Devin Townsend. It's progressive metal and the album is about an all knowing alien who comes to Earth in search of the ultimate cup of coffee before destroying it.
I <3 Devin. He's utterly mad in such such a wonderful way.
I third Knights of Cydonia~ Great song.
i 4th Knights of Cydonia! it really would be a great fit. ^w^
...or the theme song from Invader Zim, if only that cartoon still aired. lol
Looking forward to wearing her new fursuit to AC 09~
Dr WHO! best theme ever
OR Red dwarf
I can vote for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and Jeff Wayne's Musical of War of the Worlds.
However I'd choose the track "Eve of War" or "ThunderChild" over "Horsell Common and the Heat Ray"
Better yet, Max Mondo's "Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine" remix track.
*shrugs* just my 2 cents
I'd personally be in favor of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" theme. As in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9TYG9gTshU
Which is actually "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the Eagles (on their "One of These Nights" album.) Series creator Douglas Adams found it in his record collection and liked it because it sounded science-fictiony yet also suggestive of a traveler. Although, that exact cut was used only on the original radio series; it was re-recorded for the TV series, movie, and sequel radio series.
I have it on vinyl.
I 5th Knights of Cydonia

I Third the Dr. Who them, It just seems to work right with the Anthrocon them this year, plus people know of it.
Hmm... I'm thinking "Take me Away" by Blue Oyster Cult. It fits the theme of aliens quite nicely.

Imperial march
I change my mind, your's is a better choice. Now all they need to do is get a furry Darth Vader to walk around wile playing this song.
You jest, but I've spotted Darth Vader at MidWest FurFest before!

Mike
I figure that if its a sci fi theme, you must have farth vader's theme
I know it's a bit late, but that's what I get for working nights and sleeping all day.
I kind of forgot to add a video or whatnot to show what I mean, of which I will do now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI
While the video itself looks like a "Spaghetti Western", take note of all the subtle space-age stuff. There's a few references to the Sci-Fi genre, most notably Star Wars itself (the hologram stuff). Anyway, sorry about not doing this sooner.
OMG! prefect song is Animal I have become by three days grace lol!
ok, simple enough for me to choose,
Three days Grace- Animal I've become.
tis about f'n time you get on here and thanx ^^
.:*Yeah I'm the root of all thats evil but you can call me cookie*:.
Alrighty, while I've got a bit of time to kill in my having to pull an all-nighter, I'll do a quick count and post the tally.
And thus, after counting, it goes like this:
Knights of Cydonia: 6
Imperial March: 4
Animal I've Become: 2
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind: 2
Dr. Who: 2
All others: 1
I guess this thing has to end some time, so I'll cut it off a week from today. Next Saturday, 14 March 2009 at 0400 UTC (10PM EST)
Edit:
Now that I'm off of night shifts, I can actually update everything. (My apologies, a barracks move and being on mids kind of took that ability away from me.)
Retroactive to the 14th of Marz (March for those who don't speak German, or at least a little bit), the official winner is:
"Knights of Cydonia"; with a grand total of seven votes.
Thanks for voting, and for the most part keeping the process dignified.
No offense, but if con staff didn't say it, it's not "official". Forum comments are a bad way to count votes, especially when it's not known in advance that posts = votes.
I'm jumping on the "Knights of Cydonia" bandwagon! Very spacey, indeed...
WHYYYYYYY!!! i have failed at being awsome!! *runs away crying*
.:*Yeah I'm the root of all thats evil but you can call me cookie*:.

.:*Yeah I'm the root of all thats evil but you can call me cookie*:.
I'm sorry, your vote is overwhelmed by my vote as I've got a foot which can go into JOOR FACE.
Opening Ceremonies needs the theme to either Star Trek Voyager or DS9.
Once again your attempts to smuther my rebelious Heithiean behavior is blocked by my ability of not caring and the school fire wall now on to kicking you down the hill!!!! quit crawling back up, jeez your gonna hurt ur self.
.:*Yeah I'm the root of all thats evil but you can call me cookie*:.
*sigh* hEE-THeAn.

I'm reminded that the B-52's "Cosmic Thing" just about epitomizes alien dance partyin'.

The five-note fanfare from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with all the contact-establishing stuff from the rest of the score, comes to mind. Particularly if you wish the "aliens" to remain a nebulous, indistinct mystery as to what they look like, and mererely deal with the fact that They Exist, and They are Here.
The trouble with theme music is that it has to create a mood and an association with a specific experience. The range of commercial rock music which does this will only have the effect if the association has been previously made, and then only for folks who have happened to have heard it.
This would work if people have previously heard "Knights of Cydoina" (sp?), and made the same associations with it that you have - perhaps one needs to own the album, or seen the cover, or heard the whole thing; and I am not familiar with the Cydonia Mensae reference. And I don't believe that I have EVER heard anything by a musical group called "Muse". I am sure that I am not alone in this.
"Popular Culture" includes many things which are transitorily common and familiar to broad masses, but those masses are often a small, age-defined subset. "Popular Culture" also includes things which have a near universal experience level, and transcend the limits of the age-defined subset. Music from really big, widely-seen movies or TV shows is more likely to do this. It is part of the craft of cinematic score composers to evoke those feelings and moods, using sound combinations which conjure up a feeling of dread or panic or awe or wonder a hundred other emotions, and couple them with unforgettable images. There's a reason why John Williams is so much in demand, like Al Neuman or Jerry Goldsmith or the late Henry Mancini...
...But I once again digress into a rant - *sigh*
I'm usre that you song is a good one. But can someone perhaps suggest something with a greater chance of being familiar to a wider audience?
