The date was set because it was pretty much the only date range that both the Westin Hotel and the Pittsburgh Convention Center had available for us. Keep in mind that other conventions are hosted there, some of which plan their dates as many as 5 years in advance. (and that 5 years ago, we did not know we'd be in Pittsburgh!)

We're aware of the implications, but we've since learned that there is no "perfect" date on which to hold Anthrocon. Last year we were at the end of June, and attending was a challenge for students who were still in school. July 4th creates holiday concerns, and getting near the end of July starts to bump into the timeslots of other conventions.

Finally, we already have our 2008 and 2009 dates set, so that people can start planning now if they like. You can see the dates in this forum post.

Ugh, I was one of those students last year, but I got lucky since we weren't doing much in school senior year anyhow.

Looking at the dates and comparing them, college ends so much sooner than than high school did (for me anyway.)

Having these dates this far in advance definitely is great though. They're marked in my computer calendar now. I don't think anyone could really ask for a longer amount of time to get ready. (Unless you already have the next three years planned out already hehe...)

Good luck to those trying to get off from work! I'm sure if you ask in advance, and plan out if you can only have a certain amount of days off then things will work out.
