I just tried to cancel Sunday night with the Westin due to an injury, and was told they would charge $75 just to remove that one night.  WTF?  They claimed that nothing was negotiated with Anthrocon so they could not just cancel it and not charge anything.  I don't remember seeing that in my hotel registration, but given that you have to go through that registration pretty quick and it seems pretty lame to charge a long time guest a fee for not staying there one night like that.  I would not expect that sort of thing from Westin, but if they have that in their policy, I have never seen it.  Could somone clarify this or make it more obvious?  Westin just lost a star in my eyes.

I was horribly sick on Thursday and considered canceling my stay at the Courtyard for the weekend but looked online instead of in the e-mail or short policy you agree to when buying your stay. Different hotel names have different policies and even then, in the case of a large event like this one or being on a hotel by hotel basis, their policies can change. So, unfortunately, the Westin charged you because they could have sold the room to someone else who could have spent the night there (or something along the lines of that, bear with me Smiling ).

Google "_____ cancelation" and see what comes up, if you go by the specific hotel you're staying at (for me I went straight to the Courtyard Downtown Pittsburgh's site) it will have their policies about canceling listed somewhere. I think mine would have been a small fee but a refund if I had chosen to go home.
