Anthrocon 2016 Wrapup!
What a convention we had this year!
Let's start with some numbers:
- The Fursuit Parade: We had an astonishing 2,100 fursuiters in the parade this year. That's a HUGE jump from 1,460 fursuiters last year!
- Our charity this year was the The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Thanks to your efforts, we raised $31,880 for them!
- Our social media presence was huge! We made it as high as the #4 trending topic in Pittsburgh and for the first time ever we broke 1 million Twitter impressions during the week of the convention.
While the con itself is still over, we'd like to ask for a little extra help from those of you who went.
We have a Post-con Survey at www.anthrocon.org/survey. If you could take the time to fill it out, and let us know what we did right, and we could do better, we'd appreciate it. We'll read the responses over the coming weeks and use them in our planning for next year's convention.
We'd also like to ask if you could share your photos of the event. Our first choice would be our Facebook group, with our Flickr group being a close second. You might just find one of your photos being used in a future #FursuitFriday post!
(Oh, and here's the fursuit group photo)
We'd like to thank our Guests of Honor--Trevor Devall, Tracy Butler, and Joaquin Baldwin for attending the event. We'd also like to thank our hardworking staff and volunteers who made the event such a success this year. Finally, we'd like to thank our members for attending. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and will see you next year at Anthrocon 2017, which will be held from June 29th to July 2nd.
Numbers above 7000 now officially exist! I wonder what comes next.
I was just thinking that AC had best be prepared for 9000 next year.
Maybe 8500 or 9000 next year? Possibly 10,000 by 2018? Hard to say for sure. These figures are a drop in the bucket compared to what I've seen and been to. I used to go to the Gen Con Game Fair when it used to be held in Milwaukee, WI and the attendance for that was around 20,000.
I know I left this on the feedback form, but I stayed at the Sherreton at Station square this year and they were excellent and quite friendly, with a growing attendance if more hotel space is needed that could be an option(Its not THAT much further than the Wyndhym)
that hotel at station square is one of a number of hotels that could be added.Theres still untapped hotel rooms and potentially the closed macys building downtown might have a hotel being built into it soon.
Sounds good, though I'd wager it would take years to convert a department store to a hotel at the minimum, just like to think ahead if the con continues to grow
Off the top of my head, in and around downtown, we have Hotel Monaco, the Fairmont, and the Cambria Suites up by Consol (not fair from the Mariott City Center actually). Plus, as you mentioned, there's the potential hotel at Macy's coming "Soon (tm)". Additionally, we have the Sheraton at Station Square, and several hotels on the North Shore that are a short walk or T ride away.
Oh yes, The cambria suites, I had forgotten bout that one, I'd really like to see that one as well,I've stayed in one near where i live last year, it was a very well designed place..your right in how close it is. Though it should be noted that any of the further hotels probally would expect shuttle service as well, so thats an added expense for the con, The sherraton for example isn't real close to any other(Closest would be the omni i suppose)
There additionally are the Homewood Suites by Hilton, and the maybe-open-in-time Drury. We're going to review our room usage and speak to more hotels as needed!
Hi! I commisioned a very nice woman for a badge at AC this year, I realized I lost her card and I have no way of getting in contact with her. I dont even know what her name was. Long story short I was hoping you wonderful pepole could help me. Her style was quite cute she was an African American woman wearing a pink hat, at her booth she had these fabric things (I'm pretty sure they were tee shirts) in clear plastic cups with tops on them. Her table was also close to the large booth where they where selling anime merchandise. The badges she was selling where $35 I think regardless of head, bust, or full body. I hope you guys can help me I really hope I can figure out who she is!!
Our Dealers Room Layout is at https://www.anthrocon.org/node/33118/dealers-room-layout-2016 ; perhaps looking through the names might jog your memory.
I am very pleased to say that "African American Woman" does not narrow it down to one dealer. Kitt Mouri and IndigoAngelCat fit that description, and there were several more; I *think* OnnaNoko and Pocket Sushi were among them.
this year's anthrocon was by far the largest growth ever. just shy of 1000 attendees.
IT is indeed! Our second biggest year for sheer attendee growth was 2012, when we grw by 779 attendees.
Now, percentagewise, our biggest growth year was 1998, when we doubled attendance. This year was 15%, which is very good-- We usually seem to average about 11.2% each year in Pittsburgh.
(http://www.anthrocon.org/history has lots of info).
I know i had to do a double take at the growth from this year, thought i must have misheard that extra thousand than I had expected.. Marvelous growth any way you slice it.(From a purely fiscal standpoint thats more attending membership moneys for minimal(If any?) marginal cost. Helps keep the con in the black and the attendance price down.
let's see if anthrocon can break 8000 attendees for 2017
Bite your tongue!
it wont be too long before we start making the DBZ jokes about the attendence.
hmmm.......I am curious now about the growth in supper sponsor registration. If it has kept the same % growth as general or over all registration and what not. Heard a LOT of people talking about how many more there where this year (myself included) but I have no other conventions to compare it to.
I can only speak for pre-reg. We had a little growth, but not much. It was about the same as last year. Same with sponsor. It seemed like it grew a lot since this year, we had 4 people working both sponsor and supersponsor lines. We did that so the line wait would be much less than in the past.
